#33 George Horlin-Smith - 2015 Player Review

bb7c302404ed7c9ce2cd59726657747d

If someone had mentioned at the start of the year that George's mad monday costume would be the highlight if this year, it would have left plenty feeling disappointed. A 2013 rising star nominee, George looked to have cemented his place in the team the following year, playing 21 games, and would have been keen to atone for a poor showing in the semi final loss against the Kangaroos.

Unfortunately, it was not to be, with a season dogged by a hip injury resulting in the midfielder playing only 7 AFL games for the year, and being dropped multiple times to the VFL.

Despite a limited preseason, George was brought into the senior team against Fremantle in round 2 where, despite 18 touches, he looked well off the pace of senior football. After being an emergency for the Gold Coast match the following week, George returned to the team against North Melbourne, where he managed only 10 touches in a disappointing game for the Cats. He wore the sub's vest the following week against Richmond, coming on late in the third but managing only 3 touches. It was the last senior game he would play for a time.

There was, however, better news when George signed a contract extension keeping him at the club until the end of 2018.

After being dropped to the VFL, George began to show some good form before suffering a groin injury and a week out. He came back to be one of the best on ground in a close loss against Williamstown, but the injury curse then stuck again with a hyper-extended knee the following week in the first half of a heavy loss to Essendon. Although cleared of structural damage, the knee meant that Horlin-Smith spent the next three weeks on the sidelines as the senior side struggled with a heavy injury toll of their own.

Returning for VFL round 12, George earned 21 touches in another heavy loss to the VFL team against the Casey Scorpions. It was the first of 5 straight VFL games, with the last one, a 42 touch effort in a thumping win against Frankson, earning him a recall to the senior squad the following week against Sydney.

Unfortunately, with the vest on, George didn't come onto the ground until the 4th quarter, meaning only 4 touches in a solid win. Still, it was enough to have him start on the ground the following week against the Hawks, where he earned 26 touches in his most solid performance for the year thus far. Unfortunately, despite having only one less scoring shot, the Cat's inaccuracy cost them, with a 36 point loss against the eventual premiers, Rioli making the difference with 6 goals.

Going in hot favourites against St Kilda, Horlin-Smith retained his spot in the midfield, gather 19 touches in a shock draw. His leg speed came into play, with only 4 of his disposals being kicks. He did manage 5 clearances, but it wasn't enough to save him as he was again dropped to the VFL.

Playing in the final VFL game of the season against the Blues, Horlin-Smith did everything that could be expected of a dropped player hoping to find his way back to senior selection, playing across half forward and earning 31 touches and 4 goals in a thumping win to round out a disappointing season for the Bendigo Bank Cats. It was enough to earn himself a place in the final AFL game against Adelaide, a game that will long by remembered by Cats fans for other reasons, with a solid 19 disposal effort rounding out a disappointing year.

It would be fair to say that with a disappointing year behind him, George will be hoping for a full preseason and an opportunity to cement a place in the Cats' side, a job that will becoming more daunting with the probable recruitment of Patrick Dangerfield and Scott Selwood. The club, however, have shown long term faith in the young Cat, and both he and the club will be hopeful that he can be a long term success story.

Not so bad for a such a fresh-faced Cat, is it?

It might be news to some that Jon Snow Josh Cowan hasn't had the most charmed run with injury but to others his existence became a cause to rally behind.

"What is it, 3 games in 5 years?"
"He's had 5 years on the list for virtually no output"
"will he ever make it onto the park?"

Having not played since at any level since late 2013 and With Taylor Hunt leading the Brownlow after two round the level of anger were rising when Cowan played his first VFL game in more than 18 months a modest 9 kicks(100% efficiency) game against Werribee. To the surprise of many he was able to play the next week a streamed match against Richmond where he had 22 disposals (52% efficiency) mostly off half back, he seemed reluctant to use his usual flair and seemed like he needed quite a few extra weeks in the VFL. However at this point it was round 6 and Geelong's players at AFL level were dropping like flies and the club decided that he was next in like to get the call. Puff piece after puff piece about one man and his curls. Back After 1384 days, lining up on the wing it looked like he turned back the clock, his reluctance of a week ago gone as if he was rising to the occupation of playing in front of 70,000 spectators and 139,995 eyeballs. He had turned back the clock to 2013 moved well got a lot of early touches was involved in scoring chain was looking like he was finally going to repay all of the faith and patience of the club ... 10 minutes later he was subbed off having redone his hammy.

The cries against him increased like a demonic chant in an Freemason cult Finnish Sauna

"4 games in 5 years"
"4 games in 5 years"
"4 games in 5 years"

"Career high 11 disposals"
"Career high 11 disposals"
"Career high 11 disposals"

After a 10 week layoff he was ready to give it another shot when he retired against Essendon with a 10 disposal game(60% efficiency), He backed it up with four consecutive games above 22 disposals in 2nds. Including a year high 25 disposals (88% efficiency) against the Northern Blues which got him named in the Bests. Simultaneously he seemed to have passed on his injury curse back to our AFL team to give him a chance to have another AFL return just before the end of the year. Playing off half back and winning a lot of fans in his 14 disposal, 2 mark 1 goal game in 73% gametime.

The cries of support ran from all quarters of Geelong supporters

"5 games in 5 years"
"Career high 14 disposals"

Wrong cries...

"Keep. Gee he would have been a helluva player with some luck"
"impressive in the contest and really ran well in a straight line at the footy. Right sort of shape for an inside midfielder"
"YEs...solid today....he's one to keep....will only get better and a good defensive effort today"
"he is brave and deserves some luck, got better as the game went, looks at home in defence"
"Definitely a positive out of today. Cowan looked good."
"Brave lad isn't he! backed into traffic on a number of occasions without any fear."
"He looks pretty smart to me, he certainly did it, but I doubt if he did it without any fear."
"Wasn't expecting him to play off a half back flank but slotted in well."
"This kid is a jet and i love the intensity he plays with."
"He seems to be able to find a good balance between defense and attack and generally uses the ball well."

As I said when I accepted Cowan, he is now a loved player.

Overall Josh Cowan had a solid year in the VFL playing 7 games (his most since 2011), showing the outside flair that he had before his long term injuries, he teammates look for him to feed him the ball he is that 60+ metre player when gets the ball he likes to run with the ball and kick it long. On the negative side his kicking can still be a little iffy but his mix of game sense and physical characteristics are a level above the VFL and I look forward to him having another full pre-season and to see him break into our best 22 next year.

Excluding his return games after a long lay off he had the following averages at VFL level

Thanks 10lana. I share your optimism.

I have seen more than most of Cowan from his early days in NAB cup to his game in the AFL at KP last round this year. He impressed me from the start. I have reported what I saw NAB v Carlton at PPark in his first year where he was instrumental in helping Geelong over run the blues in the last quarter. His running was an eye opener. Fast and hard, with very smart positioning. In the VFL this year he began at about 70% and was still able to get involved. Later at 100 % you could see again that running, with great game sense and timing is his game. This was best seen in his game at AFL level round 23 this year. Playing at half back his ability to find position, get possession and carry was clearly apparent.

With many places available on our list - the "gods" have blessed him somewhat. But he finished fit and deserves his last chance . I was all smug when Cyril did hammy after hammy. He has now made a full recovery. I have my fingers crossed for Josh that he can follow. We need what he offers.

Just on another note. With all the frenzy about recruits arriving I reckon that even with most of them we need the kids to kick on if we are to challenge seriously. If Gore progresses as I expect he will be pressing from round 1. Cunico looks likely but later . Cowan just might be another ready to go quality player. Its depth of quality mids that make the big difference in AFL now.

Hamish McIntosh 2015 Player Review

It's fair to say Hamish McIntosh didn't end his career like he would have wanted to. A highly talented but injury cursed player, he was recruited at the cost of pick 38 at the end of 2012, he played 19 games for Geelong at AFL, all in 2014.

Given Simpson's fitness troubles in the first two rounds, McIntosh's name was raised as a potential solution as he was building on his own match fitness through, pairing well with Simpson in round 3 against Currie and Dawe at VFL level gathering 14 disposals and having 34 hitouts. Collectively they won the hitouts 63-45 in an 18 point win. After bye in round 4, in a game against Richmond he was easily best on ground collecting 25 disposals and 24 hitouts being the lone Ruckman. While he was beaten in the hitouts by Hampson he was dominant around the ground. He second goal, being near end of the 4th quarter being the match winner. Sadly this was as far as he could go in 2015, having injured his calf in the 3rd quarter, but given that the team was down to a single rotation on the bench he played on the rest of the match. It wasn't the calf however that ended his career but rather a recurrence of his ankle troubles that wiped out his 2013 season.

Much could be said about McIntosh's contribution at the club, probably bested summed up by this clip

What I can say is that it is clear that he enjoyed playing for Geelong, and I wish him all the best.

Jake Kolodjashnij

At draft time, the lesser, depending on who you believe, of the two Kolo brothers was taken at pick 41 in the 2013 draft. His brother was taken at pick 5 by the GCS. At the time, there was no where near was much noise over JK as there was KK.

In 2014, JK played 16 games in the VFL kicking 2 goals and making the best players list 7 times. He finished 4th in the VFL BnF.

At the start of 2015, things changed at the GFC - especially for those in the back line. An old spirit that had once learned, been schooled by and then became the undisputed leader of for 10 years returned. This time, in a coaching and development capacity. Yes, Matty Scarlett was once again keenly eyeing the actions of things in the back 6 - this time with an eye on player development.
And while Boris, Domsy and HT are nearly 100 years old if you add them up, it was Jackson Thurlow, Jed Bews and Jake Kolodjashnij that bore the brunt of his teachings - especially JK.

Although, JK had to bide his time some more. 2015 saw JK not active in the AFL side until Rd 12 against the Demons. What should have been a monumental occasion in Boris' 300th and JK's debut, turned into a shocking loss and a very subdued affair. JK was however not disgraced in his first outing and showed us all a glimpse of what was to come.

His season average was 6 kicks, 7 handballs, 4 marks and 14 touches per game for the 9 he played. Highlights included several fantastic intercept marks and an unforgettable chase down of Adam Goodes in the Swans game. An act that probably put the league a bit on notice that this bloke, the lower picked brother, was here to stay.

So much so that as his contract was coming to a close, JK drew large amounts of interest externally. Interest that was well warranted. Jake Lever had been taken the year later by the Crows at pick 14 and JK was performing as well, if not better than him. His intercept marks and reading of the play was becoming a signature of his play. Add to that solid foot and hand skills and the league saw exactly what Wells had seen when he drafted him.

Added to that was a year of Scarlo tutelage, and the lesser brother Kolo was no longer in the shadow, but more than holding his own position and casting his own shadow over the game.

The end of season saw no finals action for the Cats but as many re-signings were completed, none were more celebrated than the news that Jake had reupped with the club for a further 2 years. Great news.

And with Scarlo continuing to add knowledge, HT, Domsy and now Hendo also at his side, JK has cemented a place in the GFC back 6 for years to come.
Another preseason of fitness and size, and the other Kolo brother from Tassie will be making his own, very loud, news for Geelong.

Shane Kersten 2015 Player Review

It's fair to say that the much hyped super boot failed to meet expectations in 2015. After debuting in 2014 there was much hope that he'd continue with the form he showed in his first three matches before his output declined from his promising start. His role changed slightly as he led higher up the ground then last year often dragging a man up with him to prevent the opposition from going third man up. This is reflected in his Marks inside 50 frequency dropping by 8% and his Inside fifties frequency increasing 33%. His biggest issue this year seemed to be backing himself in which is reflected in his kick to handball ratio dropping significantly from 3.3 to 1.175. His selflessness is to his detriment often passing it off when he should just kick the goal himself. His shots on goal frequency dropped 42% but his goal assist frequency increased 72% (which doesn't include Johnson being run down in the goal square). Kersten is a rare case when the crowd could yell "just kick it" and actually be right. While his own contribution may have been limited our forward line structure worked best this year when he, Walker and Hawkins were all playing in the one side.

His stand out games of the year were round 8 against Carlton, 13 disposals 7 marks 2 goals 2 goal assists, round 18 against Brisbane when he gave away three goals by selflessly passing the over the last defender when he could have just kicked all three.

His seconds form was good kicking 13 goals, 1 behind in 4 games. Which showed that he is simply too good for VFL football and just needs to translate that output(and goal kicking accuracy, he runs at 50% over his two years at AFL level)

With Menzel back from injury and our riches in tall forwards for the 2016 season Kersten may have missed his best chance to establish to himself in our best 22. He should be looking forward to having a full pre-season so that he is ready to take whatever opportunity falls his way in the 2016 season.

Jordan Murdoch - 2015 player review.

Prior to the 2015 season there was much angst on this board as to Murdoch's future. Many saw an athlete trying to become a footballer. Some thought he might establish himself with time, others were less convinced. This may still be the case to an extent but I think that Murdoch's 2015 season addressed a few of the issues and allayed some concerns.

It's fair to say that Jordan came a fair way in the 2015 season. He is certainly starting to become the player we hoped he may become and expectation should now be that he continues to gradually improve year on year. It's no secret that Jordan has a couple of physical advantages over the average player - he is quick and relatively tall. In a team that has had it's fair share of injuries in recent times, he has also proved to be very durable playing 18 games in 2015 and 23 games in 2014. One could argue that he should be durable being the "outside" player that he is!

If we drill down further into his 2015 season then his two standout games were against Carlton in round 8 and North Melbourne in round 15. His game against Carlton in particular was exceptional and he was clearly best on ground that evening. That night he had 26 touches, 8 marks and 4 goals. Mind you , Carlton didn't turn up at all that night. I don't think it's any coincidence that his two best games were played on the fast surface at Etihad. I think this ground suits Jordan's game to a tee. He can utilise his run and carry to full effect here.

Jordan seems to have settled himself as a running half back/wingman. He is not, and probably never will be, a great contested player. His reading of the game still is lacking but has improved. His statistics show that he is generally a receive ball, run and kick player. On most occasions he will kick rather than handball, which is probably why he is so attractive to the coaching staff - he gains distance.

He has an ability to also hit the scoreboard if played further up the ground and has an uncanny knack of kicking an important goal. This gives him an extra string to his bow.

We saw Jordan increase his possession count in 2015. In 11 of his 18 games he touched the ball 15 times or more. This compares with only 4 games in 21 in 2014. So his involvement in the game is improving. Whereas we saw a player that tended to fade in and out of the match regularly, Jordan has now brought some consistency not just from match to match but from quarter to quarter. I think that one of Jordan's aims should be to try and shine in the "big games". I'd love to see him really stand out in a game against a top four team like Hawthorn at the MCG (notably away from Etihad).

There is a real opportunity for Murdoch to continue to establish himself in 2016. I'm not expecting massive improvement, but like his last few years, better, more consistent performances from a player more comfortable in the senior side and one with better game knowledge than the year before.

Jimmy Bartel 2015 Player Review

On a purely games played pov , Jimmy had a year he would probably rather forget.

Not since his debut in 2002 has he played as few as 11 games in the season..and back then it was due to him being a young player and he would have played VFL in between. And in what was a surprise for me.. 2015 was his first ever year where he failed to kick a goal.

Yet it was not like he was totally devoid of stats. What each game delivered showed there was still something he can bring to the side if and when he is fit. His career average 22.9 disposals , 2015 had him at 23.6. And in truth these stats are deceiving. Take out Round 3 where he was injured early and he had very solid figures across the season ..closer to 26 per game . When coming back after injury in round 15 , having only played 2 games till then , he racked up 41 disposals…and continued with solid numbers the rest of the year. There is no doubt Jimmy can still find the ball.

So what does it all mean for Jimmy? Bad year due to injury or the end is nigh?

To my mind there is no doubt Jimmy’s best footy is behind him , but he is still more than capable of playing very good football. One of his key strength..overhead marking is not quite as strong as it once was…due I feel to a slight loss in spring… Yet the ability to read the play is as good as anyone’s. I anticipate him being keen to make every match from here on really count.

Games will get harder to get as the side gets stronger.., he has seen fellow players from his draft year depart while they were still playing god football as well. The need to lower our age average and bring in players in their prime has seen Premiership champs go. SJ has gone to another club , so obvious still had something to give. That’s the key from here on out.. not only performing adequately but doing so while we continue to add younger talent. Honesty will be the key here every fool boxer thinks here has one left in him , and playing just good average footy may not be enough to keep the wolves from the door. Jimmy probably still has to remind us on occasion he can still do what few can.

As much as the new talent puts pressure on his position , I think it may also be key to his survival. If we were taking bulldoze the old house and rebuild approach, one would just play the kids you rate..even if green. We have been gradually adding kids over the last few years and Jimmy’s spot would come under threat from the likes of Smedts and GHS and perhaps Luxford and Menegola. But one is not using a wrecking ball when one brings in the like of Danger Henderson Selwood and Smith. We are setting ourselves to be a big time player again in 2016. And in the big time , in the big moment has there been a better player than Jimmy Bartel in the last 15 years?

What role he plays or how much he plays will be another interesting conundrum , in a year when we probably will have several. Danger and Scooter should take attention from him, Caddy and Guthrie should be now ready to be consistent. And young kids keep coming in. I see him being a player that can get under the radar a bit , and if injury stays clear of him , I see no reason why he doesn’t become our 4th player to reach 300..and help us to again rattle some cages , and perhaps pluck a few feathers in the finals.
