Players' Contract Statuses for 2009

True and GC17 Would love any of those Players

Worry I think the club should sign extensions this year to ket players above are pretty much all of them. It is important for us that we have these guys on our list and not facing them on GC17.

For the majority of them, it would be reasonable to sign them to two-year deals during the course of the 2009 season. For our new recruits, I think you'd want to see how they travel in their debut season before giving them an extension.

The flip side of your arguments is that if hypothetically say, Dayne Beams turns out to be a dud, it would be wise to leave him out of contract and then get compensated with a high-ish pick in a later draft than to take another Chris Egan-like hit to our drafting strategy. Hypothetically, I must stress.

Yes. It won't all be left until 2010. Otherwise - and assuming we have the sort of seasons over the next two years we are hoping for - we could have real problems keeping under the salary cap. Much easier if it's done progressively.

True. But sign guys to longish deals on a bit less it may help.

I Know Maxi's the captain atm but fair dinkum Im not convinced how much game he has and whether he'll have a long term AFL career.

No problems with him being contracted for 2010, bit worried about contracting him further than that.

I thought all rookies and drafted players in 2008 had to have a 2 year contract. I'm not sure if any signed a 3 year deal. Probably Rusty would have been the only one offered one, if at all.

I'm aware Beams got offered 3 but only took 2 year deal.

Hi guys. I keep a contract list for an Essendon website, not just on Essendon players but the whole AFL.

So I thought I'd help your list out by confirming the contract status of a few of your players you haven't got listed as confirmed.

I probably won't be able to find articles for all of these as some signed in 2007 and I found them on the Pie website

-------
Firstly, let me clear up a few questions that have been posed in this thread:

- 1st Time draftees in the National Draft are all guaranteed 2 year contracts, although you can sign them for longer (Carlton signed Mark Murphy for 3 years straight up). Clubs do announce if they sign players for longer though.

Note This Guarantee for 1st Time Draftees doesn't extend to the Pre-Season Draft. 18 year olds drafted in the PSD can still be signed for 1 year

- Players drafted in the ND, that have already been on another team's list can be signed for 1 year (ie. Freo only signed Mark Johnson for 1 year after drafting him in 2007). Can't confirm it, but I'd be surprised if Leigh Brown was signed for any longer than 1 year.

- Rookies get 1 year deals, with the following exceptions:
International & 3 Year Rookies get guaranteed 2 year deals,
NSW Scholarship players are up to the discretion of the club, unless otherwise stated (like Pies with Scott Reed), they're usually only signed for 1.

On to your players that I'm confident on that your list either has as unknown or not confirmed:

Rookie List (2009):

Bennell, Johnny
Blair, Jarryd
Dyas, Kevin (final yr of guaranteed 2 yr international deal)
Francis, Tristan
Thoolan, Toby

Rookie List (2010)
Lachlan Keefe (guaranteed 2yr deal as a player signed under the 3 Year Rule)

Senior List (2009)

Anthony, John (absolutely positive the Pies gave him a 2yr contract shortly after his neck injury)
Barham, Jaxson (last year of initial draftee contract)
Cook, Ryan
Johnson, Ben
McCarthy, John (last year of initial draftee contract)
Rocca, Anthony
Rusling, Sean

Senior List (2010)

Beams, Dayne (2 year draftee contract - rejected a 3yr offer)
Blight, Jarryd (2 year draftee contract)
Cloke, Travis (confirmed in 4th para from the end)
Dawes, Chris (out of contract last season and signed for another 2)
Fraser, Josh (signed a 3yr deal in 2007)
Rounds, Luke (2 year draftee contract)
Sidebottom, Steele (2 year draftee contract)
