Players crossing to the enemy

What are some of the more 'sacriligious' player movements you have seen. You know, when players from your team by choice or otherwise play for another team, especially the enemy. It just doesn't seem natural.

One of the glaring ones I can think of is Mick McGuane crossing from Collingwood to Carlton. That must have burned the Pies faithful deep. Even the Blues fans didn't approve of that one.

Hawker, Manton and Harry Madden found their way to the Blues from Essendon. Spalding from Melbourne. Williams, Evans and Rhys-Jones from Sydney annoys the Swans fans.

I can't think of any Blues players going elsewhere that upset me. Hamill to St Kilda upsets me but only because we have lost a great player, not because of the Saints who I don't mind at all. Jezza to St Kilda upset me more at the time but he was a god to this then very young awe struck fan.

Reveal all, which player departure just went against the laws of nature for you???

For me the 3 moving to blues, Hawker, Manton & especially Madden, my son was 4 & idolised Justin, he was devastated, I eventually talked him around to supporting Simon which he did.

Wallace after 86 and crossing to the hated Tiges. Not so much him wanting to go (the money was great) but the things he said at the time. He believed that Bucky was being groomed to take his place in the middle by Jeans (which he was) and would have more chance of staying in the middle with the Tiges than fighting it out at the Hawks.

Always thought it a piss weak excuse from a player that i had come to admire for his fighting qualities. That his single year at the Tiges was an abject failure was a very great pleasure to me. Time softened me though by the time he went to the Doggies, was glad he found some form again and finished his career in style.

Others that left a sour note were Gowers (leaving cause he wanted to play in finals, sounds like a certain Woods captain, hey?) but we got Harford out of that deal. Ben Allans leaving also sucked as really we got sweet FA for him.

Cant think of to many others that really hurt, Bernie Jones to the Dons did when i was young though. Lucky they realised the mistake it was to trade him and got him back the following season. What a legend was Bernie!

Ive got to say the one that pissed me off the most was Paul Hudson to the bullies, after years of sticking up for him to even are own supporters he not only leaves but he does it without giving Hawthorn a CHANCE OF trading him.

Peter Bell to Fremantle - even though like Geelong with Colbert, both clubs would probably be better off with the draft picks they received down the track.

Wayne Schwass to Swans - still find it hard to watch him play with the Swans - one of my alltime favourtie players.

Wayne Schwass most of all, even though I've always been a big Shannon Grant fan and think the trade has been a win-win for both clubs.

Peter Bell to a lesser extent - not because of his ability as a player (good solid player but slightly overrated by most), more so that circumstances of his departure. I'm still very pleased though about the player and draft picks we got in exchange.

I was mighty pissed when John McCarthy went to Fitzroy - he was my favourire player at the time (when he chose to switch himself on).

Other bands play, Manowar KILL !!!!!!!!!

Ahh Johnny McCarthy, he certainly seemed to have unrealised potential, in his first year or so at Fitzroy had some decent hauls of goals.

But by his later years, fans were calling him 'Jenny' McCarthy!

Jeff White showing no loyalty at all to the Dockers annoyed me. They invested time & money in him, and in return he followed the $$$$ without what appeared to be much hesitation.
I know some may say he was also leaving to a better team, but at the end of 97 when he left The Dockers, from memory, Melbourne finished last?

For me it is Spalding going to the Blues. He made the right choice though with the Blues winning the flag. Older members of my family constantly remind me of Ron Barassi going to Carlton. Many Melbourne fans still struggle to believe it.

Paul (I sold my soul to Channel 7) Roos.

Some think he left to protect his financial interests, but he was supposedly going to Collingwood instead of Gary Pert.

P.S. The Carlton fan, Greg Williams was told he was no good by David Parkin and shipped off to Geelong in the 1980's; so don't count him as a Carlton successful recruit.

The Roys will remember

I assume you are talking to me Slax about Diesel?

I am fully aware of Greg Williams early years but he was still a recruit. Carlton got rid of him before he was anything. He developed at Geelong and became a superstar and Brownlow Medallist at the Swans. Geelong and Sydney had more claims over him than Carlton did. Sure, us Blues fans can justify the move by saying he was ours first but it doesn't wash with the Swans fans to whom Diesel was an integral part of their future success. That would have hurt me if I was them, just as Aaron Hamill's defection cuts deep for me now.

Definitely Paul Roos to Sydney. As soon as I heard he was leaving, I knew that that was the end of Fitzroy Football Club.

For inequality, couldn't go past Ian Stewart being swapped for Bill Barrot in 1971. Stewart continued to star, while Barrot played two games before vanishing.

I am grateful that I am not as judgmental as all these censorious, self-righteous people around me.

Tony Lockett moving to Sydney at the end of 1994 left me completely shattered.

To a lesser extent, seeing Nicky Winmar play a year for the doggies was hard to take.

However from the time I was 3, it was Plugger who I spent my primary and early secondary years idolising. While the move may have proved to be beneficial for both parties, I will never forgive him.

Gary Ayres to Geelong/Adelaide
Ken Judge to West Coast
Lethal Leigh to Collingwood/Brisbane
David Parkin to Carlton
Rocket Eade to Sydney
Terry Wallace to Richmond/Bulldogs

They come home eventually........

Schwatta to the Swans - he was easily my favourite player. A Rock to the Hawks (although it's been good for him), Bruce Abernethy to Collingwood.

Slax,
Diesel was actually rejected by Carlton twice, before they accepted him!
All that goes to prove is how desperate he was to play for the best. He just did not give up trying and in the end he succeeded.
He loves the club so much, he is still there.
Carlton always look after their champions, when they have retired. That was actually explained to "Aaron Who" before he defected to St Kilda. He chose not to listen! I bet his former mates in Blue will be wearing a premiership medallion before he is.
