So I caught up with a mate who's son plays for a Melbourne club.

Great dude. Both him and his son. Great family.

We were chatting about stuff and although I try not to spam him with footy talk as I figure he possibly doesn't want to talk about it constantly, the conversation naturally went that way.

One thing he told me that kind of surprised me, was that the players all love the coach. The coach is currently 'embattled' so that surprised me a bit. But the other thing he told me is that his son gets 2 days off per week. The day after the game, and another day during the week.

I was shocked by that.

Is that normal?

I assumed most clubs would give players 1 day off per week at most? Is this something all clubs do?

Depends what they mean by "day off".

Geelong for instance apparently has an attitude of trusting players to complete their required program at home without needing to come into the club to 'prove' they're doing it. That might count as a "day off" if they're not physically coming to the club and are allowed to do their own thing in their own time.

The players must have at least one full day off and one half-day off each week, per the CBA.

Clubs might also push that half-day to a full day in some cases, for one reason or another (first-year players, for example).

Normal people who work full-time get two days off per week, so I don't see an issue with full-time sportspeople getting two days off. People need rest to perform well - not just the body, but the mind too.
That's all cool, but I doubt there are many players that genuinely take days off during the season. They might not go into the club, but they're not playing Xbox all day either. If they are then its probably going to show eventually.

How long are the players at the club though? Do they arrive at 9, train until 5 mon-fri?
Clubs only have 16 contact hours during the week with players, outside of gameday(obviously different if traveling interstate).

It's one of the big frustrations coaches talk about.

Players can obviously come into the club on their own time obviously but the club can't mandate it.

Normal people don’t have 8-10 weeks of holidays they get 4.
