Players that didnt live up to their hype?

Aaron naughton comes to mind. Hyped by dogs as the next big thing and has just turned out to be a good player

Def not better than Rayner: Worpel, Moore, McCartin, TDK, Higgins, Kelly.

Maybe: Naughton and LDU

3-5 tops.

Moore doesn't belong on that list.

They have comparable output from a goals per game perspective, and Moore has an All Australian jacket, which Rayner does not.

I like Moore, but for one game only if both players were available to be selected for one spot, geez I dunno. I know it's unrealistic but that's how I'm grading them.

Reliably average
Was hyped as a star . Wasn't.
Ross Lyon famously gave him the ass iirc
Yes and Ball famously played in a flag the next year against his old side. Ball might not have been a superstar but he was a reliable player and good at what he did, which was play inside mid. Far from the worst number three draft choice.

Nathan Brown when he went to Richmond, injury played a big part but looked like he had potential to be the best player in the comp and never fulfilled that potential
He arguably did fulfil that potential, for a solitary month or two leading up to his leg being snapped in half. Putting up midfielder numbers (at the time) whilst booting bags of goals. Averaged 20 touches and 3.2 goals per game that season.

Differences in eras of course, but that was probably the best patch of footy I've seen from a player in my lifetime, ever.

He's more than good and would command absurd money on the open market.

Key forwards who can kick 40-50+ goals/year are worth a truckload.
Not disputing his a good player, but he was hyped by dogs fans and media his first few years to be the next big thing and it never happened. He has fallen well short

Jared Brennan.
This is the exact player I think of when I think of 'didn't live up to the hype'.

A number of these players - particularly 'failed' number 1 picks - had careers massively blighted by health issues. Brennan, on the other hand, had an enormous amount of talent but just lacked the commitment required of an AFL footballer.

I wonder how he feels about it now? He did still play 173 games to the age of 29, and, having played for Gold Coast, probably set himself up financially for the rest of his life - but could have had the sort of career of, say, Chris Grant, had he wanted it badly enough.

Fair

In that case I refer back to Rayner.

People keep talking about how he's a dual premiership player (irrelevant) and has 'contributed' to both flags (true, sure) but based off the hype (next Dusty, as always...) he has also fallen well short and is just a B-grade role-player at best. Pops up her and there for some impact then goes missing again.

Very true. This thread isn’t titled players who are no good, it’s players who didn’t live up to their hype. Rayner is a very good example of this.

Solid B grade role player who has moments in games of impact but is very inconsistent has a poor tank and lack consistency or footy IQ

Bluntly put, if Rayner played in a crap side, he would really, really struggle to have impact on the game.

He would probably be talked about as trade material, but in a great side, he is able to play a specific role and have some impact on results.

If he was in the north forward line, he would be absolutely lost and look hopeless

Yeah but also didn't live up to the hype.
Billy Frampton played in a flag.
Ball was steady and reliable but was hyped as a star when he was drafted.
So not a great entry in this thread but also not a terrible one.

Nah he's a star

Balll pre OP and post OP are 2 different players.

Jaidyn Stephenson

James Aish comes to mind. Pick #7 with a lot of football pedigree from the SANFL. Huge wraps on him early, even a few years in when he hadnt done much eddie maguire went full revenge trade mode for the earlier beams trade and the hype kept momentum as he moved to the pies but ultimately ended up a bit of a journeyman at 3 clubs.

Jared polec another one from the lions, pick #5 with good skills but never really wanted the hardball or to tackle. Ended up a bit of a journeyman too. Think he ended up getting delisted by a very average north side.

Jack Watts
Cam Rayner
Matthew Kreuzer
James Aish
Josh Fraser
