Pick 30 would have netted StKilda any of Sam Reid, Allen Christensen, Nathan Vardy, Sam Shaw, Ben Stratton, Jess Chrichton, Dylan Roberton, Ben Sinclair, Dylan Grimes or Alex Silvagni. Others will come through as well, the players from that draft are still young.

Plus Wellingham and Goldsack were also on the table

Saints decided not to bother having a swing. Their call.

Instead they drafted Winmar (done nothing yet) Jess Smith (gone) Pattison (gone) Johnson (gone?) Dawson promoted (gone) and no rookies of note with the possible exception of Archer. Included on their rookie list was a retired player.

Saints had a stinker across the board. They totally botched everything about that trade week and the draft itself. They didnt think Ball was worth 30 and a player yet they thought Jesse Smith was worth pick 60.

Go figure.

Typical Timmy propaganda to change the subject about Ball and Collingwood cheating the system. You've got to love the lies about Goldsack and Wellingham. Try to get the drafting right to Timmy.

The problem that year was Collingwood didnt trade for was Ball was worth, St Kilda held out for his REAL price and cut off their nose to spite their face, sure they appeased their fans but were stupid to do it.

Tippett is in an almost identical situtation, if crows play hard ball this will happen again!!! Syd wont trade for what he is worth, but what they have (22).

Its not breaking the rules, but it is screwing ur former club!!!

On a side note if tippett does chuck a Ball and no medicals, talks to other clubs in PSD, watch eddie get angry about not in the spirit of trading (and prove what hypocrite he is!!!!)

lol Collingwood offered exacly what Ball was worth and some.

They offered pick 30 + Wellingham.

They even tried to send Wellingham + pick 30 to North in exchange for pick 21 to then ontrade to Saints but North didn't want it.

Bulldogs also wanted far too much for Everitt- they a pick inside 25 for him and wouldn't accept pick 30- god knows why? 5 spots is hardly something to "hold out for".

In the end, the market spoke and favoured Collingwood because Ball ended up going for pick 30 alone and retained Wellingham who happened to net us a premiership the following year and then netted us pick 17 just this week for his services.

Nice try though.

He was / and is an extremely good inside midfielder!!!
Worth pick 15-25, collingwood tried hard to get it done and St kilda didnt trade even when it was clear that they wouldnt get anything to spite the pies. Thats what im saying, not that pies were being dicks but that saints were being ridiculous.

Do you rekon crows will do the same?

See your point but not sure the market spoke so much as it didnt have a choice if he refused medicals at other clubs. Yes, the saints stuffed up but Luke Ball (and Collingwood) obviously had his hand in some questionable tactics too.

Fair points by both of you above, although he wasn't worth pick 15 at the time, he was on the fringe of their best 22 and Ross Lyon even told him that. He was worth a pick in the mid 20s IMO and pick 30 wasn't far off it.

As for whether the Crows will do the same? No they won't. They understand they need to get the best deal that they can for Tippett because they can still make use of it. Also, Tippett will have more value than what Ball did so it would be stupid to throw him to the scrap heap. Sanderson is trying to build and add to his team so getting absolutely nothing for a leaving player would not be good business.

Collingwood never offered Wellingham to StKilda. StKilda wanted Brown that was refused. Collingwood offered the bare minimum knowing Ball would walk and manipulate the draft.

You say that like Collingwood are the bad guys for not giving them an extremely specific and required player? Both Wellingham and Goldsack were offered at one point or another, indirectly or not. Ball did put $500,000 on his head in the draft which played large a part in him getting through. It was never a foregone conclusion that he was going to get through to Collingwood at pick 30, I was convinced we wouldn't get him. I think the fact that he did make it through to us has clouded your take on it all.

Well there you go then. StKilda asked for Brown Collingwood refuse and offer up apparently two bloke StKilda have no interest in at all. So what should they do? Ok Collingwood you really want Ball we will happily take a player we dont want or need just to keep you happy????? Cmon thats ridiculous. StKilda had every right to play hard ball with Collingwood as they would have had no idea Ball would manipulate the draft to end up there.

It is a trade. A player can nominate a club but neither club is bound by the players desire. As this happens more I think you will see clubs play harder, players may chose to sit out a season, but that would be without pay (after a legal process) and may not be a smart thing to do.

All part of the negotiation mix.

they are still obsessed with brown. Looked a very good offer to me - in hindsight it was outstanding
