I forgot they even played for us. Only remembered because you mentioned them.Zaharakis - good player but has never gone on with it in the way expected.
For us Brett Spinks and Mitchell White come to mind
Btw what was with us recruiting all ex-WCE. Haynes, Hall ( he was good ) Miles and those two flops.

Yes they showed promise but weren’t pumped up. The premise of the thread is players who were pumped up.Jack Grimes was a captain and Jurrah had a book written about him and featured in many highlight reels.
Obviously Melbourne are in a hell of a better place now but not so long ago it was littered with duds that promised much but delivered little.
LOL. KPP who hasn't even played 50 games. come of it.Mav Weller

Good post.Josh Fraser never lived up to the #1 pick hype. He was a plodder.
Stephen Oliver was pumped up as the next big thing at Carlton from 1992-94, a potential superstar full forward, but he didn't like the city life and preferred playing with his mates at Castlemaine in the Bendigo League.
Justin Koschitzke and Anthony Rocca both played 200 games and were touted as potential superstars early in their careers. They might've had 1 or 2 good seasons, but neither of them really delivered. They were both just average players. Below average in many games.
Kris Massie - was pumped up by the Blues fans, but never did much in his 10 years with Carlton or Adelaide
Daniel Harris - back in 2006/07, some North fans argued he was better than Sam Mitchell. Ba-bow...
Jared Brennan - oozed talent in his first few games, talked up as a superstar, but he was just an average player
Jason Laycock - mobile ruck forward who got the Bomber fans excited after a couple of good games
Colin Sylvia - skilful Grade A dickhead who cheated Melbourne and Fremantle out of a lot of money
Kepler Bradley - Sheedy always talked him up as the second coming of Glen Jakovich
Xavier & Raph Clarke - top 10 picks who were pumped up, but were never anything more than fringe players
Brayden Shaw - Tony's son never really looked like making the grade
Aaron Davey - was okay, but never really hit the same electric heights that he did in his first 2 seasons
Richard Tambling - superstar junior drafted ahead of Buddy who was timid at AFL level
Tom Williams - Bulldog defender was talked up early on, but never made it. (injuries maybe? knee?)
Leroy Jetta - much-hyped U/18 small forward who never amounted to anything at Essendon
Jarrad Grant - looked deadly kicking 6 goals in one game early in his career
Rhys Palmer - beat Cyril for the Rising Star award in 2008, a bad decision which only looked sillier with each passing year
Jack Grimes - Melbourne co-captain from 2012 to 2014. Delisted after 2016. What happened???
Chris Yarran - looked the goods in 2011, but failed to kick on. Squandered his talent.
Ayce Cordy - a father son selection who would've a been the no.1 pick (or so we were told)
John Butcher - a good overhead mark who couldn't kick
Jordan Gysberts - another one of Melbourne's lost generation of high draft picks who looked pretty good but disappeared
The Sylvia comment is spot on. He was paid to snort coke and walk out of revellers at 6am.Josh Fraser never lived up to the #1 pick hype. He was a plodder.

Matthew Kreuzer. I know he has had a lot of injuries but for a number 1 pick I've never seen him do anything to justify that position.
I don’t get it either.Toumpas was spoken about like he was the best thing to ever come out of SA when he turned out to be a lot more like their tap water. How he is still on Port’s list I’ll never know.
Really his 2017 season showed just how good he is. If he wasn't smashed by injury he could have performed to that level much earlierMatthew Kreuzer. I know he has had a lot of injuries but for a number 1 pick I've never seen him do anything to justify that position.

I knew Toumpas was a bust the moment Melbourne read his name out.Toumpas was spoken about like he was the best thing to ever come out of SA when he turned out to be a lot more like their tap water. How he is still on Port’s list I’ll never know.
