Players that your club turned down or gave away

You'll never know if Hawthorn were better off or not.

I find it astonishing that a club that until the season immediately before Ablett arrived had a captain and vice captain that didn't speak unless it was on a footy field, that had two of his brothers, his brother-in-law and a copper for a coach couldn't have tamed him. Do you and Hairy O have such a low opinion of the club you follow?

In a group of blokes that large, you're not going to be best mates with each and every one of your teammates. Anyone that's played the game or been around footy clubs in any way understands that. Some teammates you may not even like at all. That's fine, as long as it doesn't become an issue that impacts the club. Scotty and Lethal were two very different units, but thankfully the were professional enough to not let their r/ship (or lack thereof) become an issue. Unfortunately that's not really a trait that GAS could boast, certainly not in the early/mid 80's.

And yes, we could've bent over backwards and pandered to every whim of GAS in the knowledge of his undeniable talent (ie. keep turning a blind eye to him not turning up to training, keep selecting him over teammates that were training and training hard, rocking up on game day whenever he felt like it etc etc), and compromised all of the club's professional standards and expectations...but where did that get you guys?

James Clement, Paul Medhurst probably the two that spring to mind.

Our 00-07 list mgt boggles the mind still.
I remember watching a TV interview with Clement in 2002. He seems like an articulate and honest guy and he clearly wanted out for a fresh start....Guess Freo didn’t have much choice...

There aren't many famous "given away" Eagles. Players who leave generally do worse elsewhere, Brad Ebert the main exception.

Matt Clape played a few games in our flag years and was let go at the end of 1994. Played 23 games for Carlton in 1995 and won a flag.

Matthew Connell was around at the same time and played 3 games. Went to the Crows in 1995 and won the B&F then played in the 1997 and 1998 flags.

Matthew Spanger (we like cutting Matts) we let go and he was a journeyman at Sydnay and Hawthorn. Good on him for featuring in the 2014 flag.

Mitch Morton we let go and he played a couple of good years at Richmond and two good games at the Swans playing in the 2012 flag.

Scott Lycett we let go as a free agent so the next few years will show whether that was the right call.

As for players we turned down... probably should've put Tim Kelly on the rookie list around 2015/16.

Plenty of homegrown drafting misses if they count?

IE - Simon Black, Nat Fyfe

Every club has a heap of these. Nat Fyfe going at pick 20 when we had pick 7 isn't really us turning him down given another dozen teams also passed on him.

I believe we passed on Simon Black because we had concerns over his disposal and preferred Rowan Jones. The same Rowan Jones who almost cost us a GF spot missing a set shot from 15m out.

Hilarious/tragic considering Black turned out to be one of the silkiest users of the footy by foot or hand of his generation.

Wasn’t the main knock on him, his perceived lack pace?

The same Rowan Jones who made sure we won a grand final after Kerr's errant kick went into the middle of the ground with 20 seconds left and towards a Swans player, Jones went in hard to the contest and won the ball denying them possession.

Perspective ;)

Yes, the very same.

I'm fairly confident Simon Black could've played his role in the side if needed. :)

Pace was the main issue.

They took a punt that he wouldn't get picked up that early as we had picks 34 and 37 but the Lions got us.
