Players that your club turned down or gave away

And won none of them. And yes.

The consensus at the time was 100% committment from all players and all coaches and he disnt want any of that.

And you don’t think geelong ever questioned that either before deciding that ‘no, this bloke is different and maybe as potentially the greatest player of all time we can be a little more lenient’

They’re professional clubs mate. No one at them is stupid enough to think that one approach works the same for every player.

Literally in this thread it has been addressed that two of the most important figures in the Hawthorn dynasty didn’t function properly together.

So what does the club do? Not force them to. Accept that they’re professionals and can perform their role effectively anyway. Even though it would irk some people and fly in the face of the traditional ‘one for all/all for one’ mates mentality that is supposed to bind clubs together.

If you don’t think Hawthorn could have found a way to manage that, you have a lower opinion of them than even I do

Tony Delaney, Todd Ridley, Scott Cummings, Blake Caracella, Kepler Bradley all gave away, turned down a good Glenn manton, wanga, houli. I could go for hours, coaches would be interesting

And you don’t think they did not try?
As for Scott and Mathews much is made of their limited relationship off field, both have acknowledged that there was no animosity just they were different people and both had absolute commitment to the club. Hawthorn’s strength as a club comes from the understanding that no one is greater than the club. Buy into that and the club will look after you. Ablett did not or could not so was not

The naughties:
Brock McLean - his development had stalled but still got a first rounder out of Carlton and used it on two time Rising Star nominee, Jordan Gysberts.
I heard an interview a good few years ago on that trade with someone at the dees- Internally, They had assessed his pace & disposal wasn’t going to take him to the next level he looked like he was initially going to get to; so they put him up for trade whilst he still had currency. If they’d waited a year or two most clubs would have realised this & he would have likely have been traded for significantly less. So for all the poor list management decisions that the club made over that dark period; that one looks very good in hindsight. Even if it was mind boggling at the time.

Very good. If we used that draft pick on someone like N. Fyfe (who we had 4 picks prior to his name being called out) that trade looks like magic.

But alas..

Can't remember the exact details but I think it was around 2006/7. A trade between hawthorn and Melbourne (may have included Adelaide I'm not sure) centred around Brad Sewell and star Melbourne defender Ryan Ferguson. Sewell Was open to the trade to Melb, where as Ferguson didn't want to go to the hawks.

Someone with a better memory might have more details.

Not making football the be all and end all, and not buying in, are two different things.

Amazing how Geelong could win flags with Scarlett who famously didn’t give a f*** about fitness but somehow Ablett not having to train as hard as other blokes would have destroyed a club

It’s blokes kicking a footy, it’s not the United Nations.

It’s like football is on a par with quantum physics for complexity around here sometimes.

Gold Coast not taking up the option to sign Dayne Zorko.
We turned down McPherson as a FS pick who has played good football for you guys.
The irony being that last year a genuine small forward was a glaring hole on our list.

Yeah Darcy has been ace. It is all swings and round abouts. You miss some and you pick up some good players as well.

We had the opportunity to draft Fyfe but took Sheppard instead, now one of them is a premiership player.

You wanna know how it was or you wanna hear what you wanna hear.

Gave away Stringer for peanuts because he's a sh1t bloke who was toxic around our club. Could bite us in the ass as he slowly recaptures his 2015 form, but he was a massive part of our culture being trash for a while there.

Seems to have settled down at the Dons.

Has really grown as a person with us, matured a lot and is starting to benefit on field, had a good 2019 and looks even fitter again, Was the move you guys needed as well as him.

I believe we gave most of Collingwoods good players to them in the 2000s e.g. Clement Medhurst etc
We must've only had three good players. :( We did do well out of Clement, Medhurst and Holland though admittedly. Tarrant was handy to have back too.

How it was: Ablett was given a long leash and his side made 4 grand finals, and while they lost all 4, they were all against clearly superior sides.

Not really seeing a lot of evidence here for why someone who noticeable IMPROVED a good but not great side would somehow have hampered a far stronger side
