Definately NOT a Hawk.

Norm Goss - still think of him as a South Melbourne player.
I never saw him play for Souths , so in my mind he is a Hawk , and he was on match committee under yabby during the eighties. Him in the number #1 is one of my earliest footy memories.

He played in 1978 premiership side but he didn't get off the bench did he ?

Funny how numbers stick in your mind. I first saw Peter Hudson in the #1 gurnsey, so to me (as an 11 year old) didn't he always wear number 1? :)

I have a feeling that Goss did play in the 78 GF, but we need the people like Adelaide Hawk or Lord Mud to verify that.

Goss was named on the interchange bench. He had one kick, a free awarded to him and gave away a free kick.

Okay so roughly 9 months on since my OP. We're premiers and a whole heap of these guys have now got a Hawthorn flag to their name now. I've updated their Hawks games to date and updated my reflection on each of them... It's safe to say winning a premiership for your club has a dramatic effect on how you see a player...

Josh Gibson Roos: 65 games, Hawks: 73 games to date
Already thought he'd be remembered as a Hawk but a premiership medal and a Peter Crimmins medal in a premiership year put it beyond all doubt! The only claim to fame at North Melbourne will be that ridiculous afro he had...

Shaun Burgoyne Port: 157 games, Hawks: 77 games to date
Was a line ball originally and probably leaning towards Port but after being pivotal in recent big games (that PF goal!!) and now having a Hawks flag to his name I think it's starting to lean towards the Hawks a bit. The fact he's still playing some really great football in a successful team really helps that cause.

David Hale Roos: 129 games, Hawks: 59 games to date
Bit of a fringe player at the Hawks. Just came off a career best season and has a premiership medal around his neck. History will now remember him primarily as a Hawk.

Kyle Cheney Demons: 14 games, Hawks: 18 games to date
His career is really stagnating sadly (for him) due to the quality of the list. Will be remembered as a Hawk more than a Dee but at this rate is more likely to be remembered as a Hawk of the Boxhill variety...

Jack Gunston Crows: 14 game, Hawks: 36 games to date
Hawk! plain and simple. Talk about a big 50th game btw!

Brian Lake Dogs: 197 games, Hawks: 18 game to date
This is the biggest back flip for me. Will always know in the back of my mind that he played the majority of his career at the Dogs but I'll never shake the image of him standing on the stage GF day to accept his Norm Smith medal while wearing the #17 and his premiership medal. A Hawk in my mind and probably all Hawks faithful.

Matthew Spangher Eagles: 26 games, Sydney: 6 games, Hawks: 7 games to date
Didn't really know him before he got to the Hawks and now that he's played a few games for us and gathered a religious following it's hard to see him as anything but a Hawk.

Jonathan Simpkin Cats: 3 games, Hawks: 13 games to date
Has eclipsed his Cats games record and won 2 medals wearing the Brown and Gold in the space of a week! Hawk!

Ben McEvoy Saints: 87 games, Hawks: 0 games to date
Will take some time to be remembered as a Hawk but a premiership, Norm Smith and Peter Crimmins medal have all proven effective treatments to speed up the process...

With this ‘new’ precision kicking game I wonder how Simon Cox would go in today’s footy. Suckling is so similar in his weaknesses and strengths, yet most think he is a walk up start in our best 22.

I’d almost say Cox’s kicking was better because it was a normal action, as opposed to kicking across the body and ball, which seems to lead to more miss kicks under pressure.

Amazed that Gunston has only played 23 games with us according to the OP. Surely that can't be right???

Edit: Just looked it up and it's correct. Boy, his impact has seemed much more significant than that!!
23 games in 2013, 42 games in total for Hawks.

Thanks for the correction. I grabbed the numbers from Fanfooty.com but it would appear due to it primarily being a fantasy footy resource that they only "count" games during the H&A (the entire fantasy footy season) in the games tally.

These might have been done already but how about some less remembered guys that have been multi-club players with the Hawks. We might not have brought all of them into the club, but hey, they played for other clubs also -

Some others we have taken in
Jed Anderson (GWS) - Hawk - no brainer
Jonathon Ceglar (Pies) - Depends on how he progresses but probably a Hawk
Anthony Rock (North) - Probably North but he was OK for us while he was here
Aaron Lord (Cats) - Hawk
Simon Beaumont (Blues) - Probably a Blue
Simon Cox (Doggies) - A Hawk
Carl Peterson (Tigers) - A Hawk
John Barker (Fitz) - A Hawk player through and through
Darren Kappler (Bears / Swans) - A bit of a nomad from memory - Probably remember him equally as a Roy and a Hawk. Not a Swan though.
Tony Woods (Pies or Fitz??) - A Hawk
Brendan Krummel (WCE)- A Hawk - most would not know he even played for the E-Girls or Freo (Most probably don't remember him at all to be honest)
Jon Hassall (Pies) - A Hawk - not a distinguished career but better as a Hawk if you ask me
Nathan Chapman (Bears) - From the Bears / Lions - Is a Bear
SImon Minton-Connell (#unamethemheplayedthere) - hehe
Jason Taylor (Fitz) - A Hawk - not very memorable but not too bad with us
Russell Greene (Saints) - A Champion Hawk
Terry Wallace (whoever had the wallet out) - A Hawk to me

Some others we have sent away -
Ben Allen (Freo)- Tricky one - Very good at the Hawks and Freo
Matthew Robran (Crows) - Crow
Rocket Eade (Bears)- No brainer - Hawk
Andy Gowers (Bears) - Hawk
Michael Collica (WCE) - To me a Hawk but that's because I loved him as a Hawk. Probably more notable as an Eagle
Tony Hall (Crows) - A Hawk - F*ck the Crows
Mark Graham (Tiggers??) - A Hawk
Richard Taylor (WCE) - A Hawk to me
Jonathon Robran (Dons) - A Hawk
Paul Hudson (Doggies) - I remember him as much as a Hawk as a Doggy - Probably a Hawk
Alex McDonald (Pies) - A Hawk - I remember people touting him as the next big thing and I remember watching him kill Melbourne (??) in a reserves game one year
Paul Abbott (Fitz) - Most people would not even remember him playing with the Roys - A Hawk
Peter Curran (Bears) - A Hawk - Bears was retirement funds and nothing more - Still hurt though
Chris Whitman (Aints) - Again most would have forgotten his illustrious stint at the Saints - A Hawk
Dean Anderson (Aints) - Always a Hawk - Another Saints retirement fund
Peter Russo (Aints) - A Hawk and a bloody good one at that.
Sean Ralphsmith (Aints) - A Saint if anything - could not break into our side
Russell Morris (Aints) - A Hawk
Greg Dear (Tiggers) - Always a Hawk
Greg Maddigan (Freo or WCE??) - A Hawk - but only really because he was caught up in the Dermie incident in 89.
ken Judge (Bears??) - A Hawk
Rod Lester-Smith - A Hawk and a hugely under-rated player

How is that, about 1989 on-wards we had a large number of players end up at either the Aints or the Bears / Lions. That's all I could remember for now.
I am sure other will pop into my head - EDIT - Russel Greene and Lester-Smith and Judge - Just checked and I had completely forgotten Lester-Smith played at the Bears with Judgey. WALLACE - how could we forget Wallace

He's definitely Fremantle. Enticed home to be their inaugural captain, was interim coach for the Dockers after they sacked Neesham (from memory) and is still involved with the club.

I was thinking about this one this morning actually. I don't know if he should ever be considered as having been a GWS player in an AFL sense.
He was pre-listed by the Giants on a scholarship program and the closest he ever came to playing for GWS was in their TAC cup team - which is a seperate entity from the AFL club. As far as I'm aware he never actually made it onto GWS's official AFL list and hence was never a GWS player but simply a player they were entitled to first dibs on via zoning. He also obviously never played a game for them or was on any GWS related list in a year he was eligible for the AFL.

I think he'll be the next Luke Hodge so I'm quite keen to cite any technicalities to ensure his future legacy at Hawthorn isn't marred by an association with any another club! :p

Other exports: Willow (premiership hawk) Nathan Thompson (hawk or roo?), Jade Rawlings
Willo is clearly a Hawk. Most Essendon supporters I know are quick to disown him as a Bomber.

Monstaa is a tough one. Played some real good footy early in his career with the Hawks, then developed his mental illness and asked to be traded. Played some good footy for the Roos. Both clubs have legitimate claims to him, but given he asked to leave Hawthorn and then joined North Melbourne, you'd have to think he'll be remembered more for his time at Arden Street then Glenferrie.

Rawlings? Played his best footy when with Hawthorn, then cracked it when the club wouldn't give him the contract he thought he deserved but was then screwed out of going to his preferred destination. Didn't play great footy at the Dogs and was washed up by the time he got to North Melbourne. Tough choice.

Personally, I think of all three as Hawks rather than anything else.

Josh Gibson Roos: 65 games, Hawks: 100 games to date
100 games, 2 premierships, 1 B&F in a premiership year and The Golden Fist award at Hawthorn. Goofy looking afro at North. He's well and truly ours.

Shaun Burgoyne Port: 157 games, Hawks: 112 games to date
Had him as a line ball after 2013 but now that he's smashed through the 100 game milestone and won his second premiership with us I'm prepared to claim him as a Hawk before a Port.

David Hale Roos: 129 games, Hawks: 90 games to date
2 flags with us. Donuts at North.

Kyle Cheney Demons: 14 games, Hawks: 27 games, Crows: 0 games to date
Was a valuable depth player in his time with us and also a rock (in most senses of the word) at Box Hill. Was apparently the first player to have his name penciled into the Adelaide round 1 team sheet so best of luck to him there.

Jack Gunston Crows: 14 game, Hawks: 65 games to date
The only people who remember this bloke once played for Adelaide are the sooky Crows fans who come out to boo him when the Hawks play in Adelaide.

Brian Lake Dogs: 197 games, Hawks: 32 game to date
Doggies fans will remember him as a dog. Hawks fans will remember him as a premiership hero. Due to the fact any time his career is referenced in the future after he retires it will be alongside photos of him holding up the 2013 premiership cup with the Norm Smith medal around his neck it is likely everyone in between will remember him as a Hawk too.

Matthew Spangher Eagles: 26 games, Sydney: 6 games, Hawks: 19 games to date
See above re: references alongside premiership photos.

Jonathan Simpkin Cats: 4 games, Hawks: 32 games to date
Premierships at VFL and AFL in consecutive weeks have secured his spot in our memories.

Ben McEvoy Saints: 91 games, Hawks: 13 games to date
As mentioned last year, silverware certainly helps speed up the process. I definitely associate him with us only now. Saints fans and lazy commentators who like to bring up how he used to play for the Saints are likely the only ones who still think of his days at St Kilda.

And for the new additions to the list...

James Frawley Demons: 139 games, Hawks: 0 games to date
Again, silverware has proven effective in the "Hawkification" process. I'm not sure on the numbers but he's likely to have doubled his career games won by the end of his first season with the Hawks. He'll certainly have forgotten (ie. suppressed) that he was a Melbourne player.

Jonathan O'Rourke GWS: 9 games, Hawks: 0 games to date
With any luck he'll reach double figure games at the Hawks by the end of the season. Didn't really know or care who he was prior to joining us so in my mind at least he's already a Hawk.

Lance Franklin Hawks: 182 games, Swans: 22 games to date
The wounds left from his leaving have well and truly scarred over now. Most of us can talk about him now without having to spit or spew. The fact the Hawks were able to prove they still had what it takes to win B2B flags without him and against him has been quite cathartic for the majority of Hawks fans. I think quite a few can reflect positively on his time with us again. While he'll be the enemy and a flog while he remains at the Swans it seems unlikely that he'll manage to outdo his Hawthorn achievements.

Doubtful he'll ever shake the Dogs tag, even amongst the Hawks faithful. A star player for the Dogs over his career. Dual AA and played in a few Finals series with them. The only way I could see him being thought of primarily as a Hawk by neutrals after he retires is if he plays at least 3 seasons with us and is pivotal in us winning premierships in each of those seasons.

Will be interesting to see who of this mob play more games at which of their respective clubs. I know it's superficial but I personally would LOVE Burgoyne to play 2 more full seasons and retire having played more games with Hawthorn than Port.
