Re: Godzke - I don't think he'd be useful out wide either, I just think Embers is completely wrong about him with the ball at his feet.

I agree that Alves is a top RWB and not a top 3 RB. Goes without saying really. In the Barca set up id rather Alves at RB than Pique was my main point. Im more or less thinking along the lines of, "If i was Sir Alex id of put Pique at RB, he would of stayed and I wouldnt have to play John O Shea at RB ever again, yay me". Has the pace to play RB IMO despite what others say

Hes reliable for a Spaniard in the air but hes still quite poor. Infact Barcelonas set piece defending on a whole is quite poor for mine. Opposition teams just dont get enough corners to work them over on it

I thought we both agreed about him with the ball at his feet Jessica Watson? Hes fantastic at it.

I always thought Lucas Neill spent his entire career out of position. Lacks the pace to play RB, lacks the aerial ability to play CB. A pure DCM if ive ever seen one

I also wonder where Craig Bellamys career would of ended up if he played LW from the beginning. Hes clearly much more suited to a midfield role than striker role *cough offside cough* and at times for Man City he looked nigh on unstoppable on the left despite being past his prime. Could of been a beast of a player as a winger.

One reason why I was keen on keeping Ibra lol.

But when you have Xavi, Messi, Iniesta, Pedro, Villa and Alves, you've got no aerial support from set pieces. It's basically Pique, Busquets and Puyol. Maxwell/Abidal goes ok.

So it's not that Pique is bad, he's just got very little to work with.

Cant remember which game it was. Maybe Hercules game but they had you all at sea from set pieces. Was comical seeing a CL team look that lost in a defensive sense.

When its all said and done Sir Alex made a big blunder in letting Pique go. Probably wouldnt be playing CB over Vidic and Rio but would of slotted in nicely as first choice RB with a bloke like Valencia who tracks back so well

Hercules was a disaster and more of a mental abnormality rather than a consistent trend. We're usually much more organised. Look at our makeshift back 4 that played Man Utd in the CL final.

Puyol-Pique-Yaya-Sylvinho

Proved to be very well organised despite playing two guys out of their natural position (Puyol, Yaya) and one old fart from a bygone era who never got game time. :p

Busquets playing as a DM/Sweeper is the answer to preventing counters. It's probably why you got the idea that Pique would be alright as a RB, because he plays RCB and now drifts further wide when Busquets slot into the middle.

And what am I missing here?

Pique's a very good player and is just fine where he is and also he's a far better player than Vidic and obviously better than someone who can't even get on the field at the moment.

Plenty of RBs out there who are more competent and consistent defensively than Alves. Can guarantee you will not find a defender out of position more often than Alves. Not so much an issue for a RWB, but it is for a RB. At least in our team it is.

I reckon he's more than capable. Not sure how much he played there when at Pompey but if Ramos moves centrally, as he would like to, then Diarra would be worth a crack.
Where does the Airblower play for Madrid?

Surely if Ramos went centrally, you'd play a RB at RB, like Airblower, unless he's first choice left back because they have no-one else, because players like Marcelo are not defenders.

Yep, he's a LB for them. They loaned out Drenthe to Hercules whose a natural LWB and Marcelo is a bigger defensive liability than Alves. Quality player when moved up the pitch though.

So I'd have Arbeloa as first choice LB.

Jose disagrees ...

"Marcelo now has offensive quality and defensively he is growing. I didn't like anything about Marcelo when I arrived because I thought he could do everything but defend but now I am a lover of his."

Jose was right with his first assessment of Marcelo. He's just saying the rest because he has too, he cant exactly come out in the press and say one of his players is utter rubbish now, can he?

Nah - he just doesn't understand the position - doesn't conform to the positional responsibilities and he exposes his team. Very easy to get behind. And you don't even have to get past him.

Just on Perch ... when he is one on one with an attacker, why does he almost turn his back on him?

I know he's showing him in the inside but it almost makes it impossible to recover.

He's an upper class lower league defender but he struggles against quick wingers (because there's not many of them in the Championship).

He's not good enough to start in the Premier League but I'd be more than happy to have him as a back-up right back.

As for the above point Benno - not sure why he turns his back but English defenders are taught to never commit until support comes.
