Ablett had the compo changed from 1 1st round pick to 2 for the uncontracted players who went to the new teams when it became clear he was going to GC, leading to the Dees getting 2 for Scully.

Nick Maxwell's bump straight down the middle of an Eagles player (can't remember his name) in a preseason game played a key part of the far stricter rules around the bump

The Joel Bowden one was a classic, had to be changed after that. The move would have been replicated late in the game in close ones constantly after that.

And the thing is that it is likely to happen again, but with players abusing the 30 seconds set shot rule, using up 28 seconds then passing it, then repeat.

I know it's not as bad because the oppo are actually allowed to try to intercept; but it will still happen, and it will ruin a game

Gary Rohan sliding below the knees rule.

Is it sliding or is it too high? I still dont know. To say this one needs some tweaking would be an understatement

The rule was introduced after Lindsay Thomas broke Rohan's leg but he was actually going for the ball. But this was after a few incidents where Adam Goodes slid into players with knees first and it looked deliberate.

Melbourne already did it this year to beat Carlton and there was nothing wrong with it. All Carlton players went to the goal line and Jordan Lewis hit a free Alex Neal Bullen to burn the clock. Carlton players could have stood next to him and forced the shot so it's their fault

Phil matera marked the ball on the goal line About 4 feet from the goal post . In those days they made them go back from the centre of the goal line through the mark which put them on an acute angle next to the behind line toward the pocket boundary line .

Phil stood right on the mark with his back to the player on the mark on the goal line and just kicked it through past the goal post without any player able to stop him .

They were made to go back straight on after that and actually kick over the mark .

Hale and Roughhead crossing the centre bounce line and blocking natanui ' s run up caused the no blocking rule on centre bounces .

Nat Fyfe ' s 2014 suspension caused the 3 strikes rule for minor offenses at the MRP .
This rule won him a Brownlow the next year .

It was happening long before either of those two
Rule came in because Sanderlands was giving away free kicks for engaging the third man up (blizcavs) like a ruckman which was a free for a block .
That is why the rule was bought in because two blokes going up for a ruck contest had two sets of different rules

With the current interest in Luke Shuey's free kick I thought it might be time to list players who have caused the rules to be changed.

1. Kevin Bartlett. Was adept at bouncing the ball the instant he was tackled to get a free kick. Rule was changed to make the act of bouncing part of possession.
2. Joel Selwood & Luke Shuey. Are adept at raising their arms when tackled to make the tackle too high. Rules changed to prevent that but perhaps needs some tweaking.
3. Brent Guerra & 'that Richmond player' who were adept at conceding a rushed behind to prevent a goal. Rule changed to prevent deliberate rushing of behinds. Very subjective rule.
4. Jordan Lewis (& others). Were adept at getting advantage going 3rd man up at ball ups. Rules changed to prevent that. Unfortunately the changes were not thought through resulting in stupid outcomes.
5. Player whose name I forget. (Anyone remember?) Did ACL in centre ball up. Rules changed to stop long run ups by the rucks. Might have been linked to the rubber bounce pad that was used for a while.

Any other nominations?
Your 5. is based on Stynes/Biglands injuries
Lindsay Thomas x2 - contact below the knees (Rohan), inducing high contact, as least the most prominent and obvious examples.

Was on the back of another incident in the WAFL as well where a Subiaco player slid into the legs of Jaymie Graham and turned his leg into a human pretzel.

You know an injury is bad when it makes the sports shows in the US.

Not players, but Ross Lyon and Brad Scott's resting of players in the final H&A game is the reason we now have the bye.
Always thought Freo in 2015 was fair enough. 1st on the ladder and couldn’t drop any lower. Literally everything to lose and nothing to gain. Doing it in 2013 was a little more “outrageous”.

Ohh I agree. I'm all for it, it's smart play. You see it all the time in European football. Never understood the big issue here. But the AFL obviously thinks it affects the integrity of the game. (Did lol at the irony of the AFL trying to uphold "integrity")

Not a rule change per se, but Mick Gayfer's tactics of blatantly holding his man's jumper and all that jazz led to what Mike Sheehan called Operation Gayfer and the AFL announcing a massive crackdown on such tactics. People predicted that the move would end Gayfer's career, given he didn't have all that many tricks in his kit and so it was, that within a year Gayfer was no longer playing AFL.
