New players

Collingwood Batling???
I think it says A. W. Latling, but I can't see a player with a name anything like that who played senior football for Collingwood, including in the Association era (1892-96). I don't know S Jeacle (?) either.

T.J. Wright also played with Prahran. The curiously named Wally (Walter) Raleigh later also played for Carlton (I presume that is supposed to go on the spreadsheet WhiteHartLane23) as well as Brunswick. Harry Kerley also (later) played 20 games for St Kilda.

St Kilda enlistees from the Argus of 16 December 1915

New Player - H Colquhoun St kilda(1912)
W Scott - St kilda?
Glasson - St Kilda?
Hugh Colquhoun
Walter F.D.M. 'Wally' Scott St Kilda (1904-11) 108 games

It's hard work looking for all these blokes who may or may not have survived the war but I will get to the end.

...all depends on how you define the end!
Not sure if we will ever get every detail correct or answer every question.

On the weekend I photographed the Geelong memorial at Kardinia Park and got a few extra names which I can find war records for:
- Alf Horman
- George Horman
- Harry McCormick (VFA era)
- Clive Robertson (VFA era)
..and a couple of big names that I can't find any war reference for
- Bill Eason
- Harry Parkin

Anyone have any knowledge/clues here?

[NOTE:Edited to make it clear I can't find any ref to Eason/Parkin serving in WWI]

I'm thinking they may include club officials and employees or members ( as was sometimes the case with these honour rolls.

I'm pretty sure WHL23 means he's looking for war records for Eason and Parkin, as they were well known as VFL footballers. The 2 Horman's also played for Geelong, I presume the other 2 were players as well.

Had a look at those names on Trove for the war years in reference to Geelong enlistees .I suspect some of those blokes were playing local Geelong footy when the war came around.

Some local Geelong teams actually folded because of excess enlistees. Also am looking for a list in Trove of Geelong football enlistees, without much luck.

I've adopted a different approach than the traditional player based Trove search because, and I've some experience in the World War 1 searching for players in this regard, in WW1 reports the fact some was a footballer for a club was often, and quite appropriately , seen as secondary to his war duty and his death.

So the aim is to find the lists of soldiers buried in the old reports rather than look for player X or Y.

Needle in a haystack if you will as previous experience has established this is the best starting point .

Another player- Bill Fawcett who played for Footscray pre war.

After the war he played 3 games for Melbourne and Essendon.

Article also mentions him meeting a player called Partridge and Donohoe who could have been Footscray players given the context.

Almost certainly Wally, as he played for the Saints for "several seasons" from 1904-11 and according to "The Encyclopedia" had "plenty of pace". Arthur only played from 1900-01.

The same article mentions South having O'Donoghue and Bradford with "the former, on leave from the camp" O'Donoghue (who is not on the list) also played for Richmond. Bradford obviously went to war also but never made it home.
