By the way - I am intending to post an updated spreadsheet shortly but Royals keeps giving me more names to add in. I'm having trouble keeping up!

Then I'm doing my job :thumbsu:

Lest we forget

At least some more are now recognised for their sacrifices.

As promised - attached is an updated version of spreadsheet with players identified in this thread. (Hopefully I haven't missed too many)

Split into three sections on main list tab
1) Known player and identified war record
2) Player reported as serving but no known record or exact identity unknown
3) Known erroneous listings of players

Many of those in section 2 may be cleared up with more research but my bandwidth is limited! Some may also prove to be duplicates of known players in section 1.

Also are there any clubs who were in the SANFL then but are not now. They are often forgotten about like the boys from Midland Junction and North Fremantle in the WAFL.

I've been writing bios on each of the players for the club, and I'm about half way through.
There were seven SAFL(SANFL) club at the start of the Great War - Norwood, North Adelaide, Sturt, South, West Adelaide, West Torrens and Port Adelaide. Glenelg joined in 1921 and Woodville and Central District in 1964. The only team they no longer exists, from the Great War era, in it's own right is West Torrens who merged with Woodville in 1991.

The Norwood History Committee wrote a book about their players who served earlier this year.

Given its ANZAC Day - worth raising another VFL player who served in WW1 not previously identified.
Athol Milne (University) served in the AIF (24th Battalion) from 1915-1918 (this makes it 82 of the 112 players for University known to have enlisted)
His full name was Athelstane Milne - link to war service record

The Sporting Globe ran an audacious column to list as many sportsmen (from any level) who went to war.
The first instalment is here , it was weekly, and from my notes, ran around 6 months.
I got quite a few Richmond reserve names from this list
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/page/20726124

I know this is a WW2 list, but I have copied out all the VFA references and provided links to each of the 48 articles.

A useful list of around 7,000 names for those interested in WW2

Gentlemen, help me out here.
I may have found a missing player who no-one had listed as going to War.
That being the famous Alex 'Joker' Hall.

June 1 1916 The Essendon Gazette
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article74593142
"Joker" (Alex.) Hall, well-known as an Essendon League footballer in
days that have passed, and later as coach for Melbourne, St. Kilda and Williamstown, has, after one futile attempt, succeeded in enlisting for the greater game.

"Joker" has two sons at the front, and a third making munitions. A bro ther and two nephews are also in the ranks.

The Football Record, Rd 6 1916 references as well that he is going to war, and that he has left his hairdressing business.
http://handle.slv.vic.gov.au/10381/131793

So, going by that, its possible is this is him. Alexander James Hall (born in Geelong)
Service Number. DEPOT 62143
It also lists this MT1486/1, which indicates he was discharge, either during training, or camp within Australia.
http://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/SearchNRetrieve/NAAMedia/ShowImage.aspx?B=9519553&T=PDF
http://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/NameSearch/Interface/ItemDetail.aspx?Barcode=9519553
He lists his age to be 45 years. And his occupation as Hairdresser.
He looks like he was discharged after 12 days at Victoria Barracks ? Or he only listed for service within Australia ? Can someone understand what is going on here.

This story may refer to Alex 'Joker' Hall:-

AT HOME AND AT THE FRONT INVALIDED HOME.

Pte H. (Joker) Hall, who played football with Wahgunyah and Rutherglen, is also on the invalid list, and returned home during the week. On Wednesday
morning his brother, Pte. A. Hall, returned to the Base Hospital for treatment.

http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/121014063 (Aug 18, 1916)

The Encyclopedia of AFL Footballers says of Hall "His brother Jack was the original 'Joker' and he was 'Little Joker'." The book has him as Alex E. 'Joker' Hall, but his death notice has Alexander James (Joker) Hall:- http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/205718864

This suggests he was still in the military in May 1918:- http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/89780946

Two veterans and great men of the League a decade or more ago--T. Fogarty and "Joker" Hall- captained the teams in the military match on Saturday.

http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/154797631

There was a very poor response to the attraction provided in a military match at the M.C.G. on Saturday, to decide the premiership of Broadmeadows Camp. After a series of games, the teams left in were 'Recruits and Headquarters' and Reinforcements.' and after an at all 'times close contest, the former won by 2-15 to 2-8. Former League players, in 'Joker' Hall (Ess.) and Tom Fogarty (S. Melb.) captained the respective sides.

http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/155090547 (he was a Sergeant by the time of the match according to this article).

Thanks for that info.
The service record I attached earlier looks as though there was several attempts at enlisting, including as late as 1919 (If I've read it correctly).
Plus it would explain the chronology gap most sites have for him between 1914-1925.
It definitely looks like he served in some capacity at war.
If we can confirm that he was born in Geelong, that would match with the service record.

Yes, birth registered in Geelong district in 1869 found via Vic BDM's at
https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/indexsearch.doj
(name lodged as Alexander Dick Hall - his mother's maiden name was Dick) number 2483; father William John, mother Isabella.

His death registration found via same site has following info:
(number 2371) in 1953 shows William as father, Isobel as mother, and place of birth as Geelong.
