Dermie's saying Carlton should go after him

Carlton probably should.

At the end of the day we will have enough cash. It shouldn’t be case of us not having enough salary cap space.

Still expecting him to stay... this is the time of year players like him back themselves to establish themselves and get noticed, test the market to see what they are worth, and then are able to maximise their offer to stay.

Confident if we want him enough he will stay a Swan.

Gee there's some list management work to do over the next few months.

Contract Expires - 2019:
Joel Amartey (Cat A Rookie - 2nd Year) - Keep Rookie 3rd year
James Bell (Cat B Rookie - 2nd Year) - Upgrade
Darcy Cameron - Trade
Harry Cunningham - Extend
Robbie Fox - Extend
Cody Hirst (Cat A Rookie - Grundy Replacement) - Extend
Kieren Jack - Retire
Zak Jones - Extend
Michael Knoll (Cat A Rookie - Tippett Replacement) - Extend
Jack Maibaum (Long Term Injury List) - Extend
Hayden McLean (Cat A Rookie - Maibaum Replacement) - Extend
Jarrad McVeigh - Retire
Daniel Menzel - Delist
Colin O'Riordan - Extend
Toby Pink (Cat A Rookie - 3rd Year) - Upgrade
James Rose - Extend
Nick Smith (Long Term Injury List) - Retire
Durack Tucker (Cat A Rookie - 1st Year) - Not sure
Sam Wicks (Cat B Rookie - 1st Year) - Extend

So I have 5 coming off the senior list (Cameron, Jack, McVeigh, Menzel, Smith) and 2 rookies being upgraded (Bell and Pink) so there's 3 draft picks.

I suspect there might be a couple more seek a trade.

As Durack has been injured all year I would expect:
Durack Tucker (Cat A Rookie - 1st Year) - Extend

Keep in mind we have 3 extra Cat A rookies in McLean, Knoll and Hirst currently listed than spots available on the rookie list because of mid season injuries/retirements ofTippett, Grundy and Maibaum. We have to cull the rookie list either via promotions to the senior list or delisting players, not just so we can keep any of the above three but to make space for the rookie draft considering we have 2 spots in Reynolds and the Irish kid already taken.

Are we required to take more or is an either keep or draft scenario?

And I guess I haven't included Tippet (rookie) or Grundy as retirements so that's 6 coming off the senior list and 2 rookie upgrades.

Its either keep as Cat A rookies or delist.

As it stands we have 5 Cat A spots to fill and 2 Cat B to fill. If we keep the 3 mid season additions as well as Amartey and Tucker, we'll have no picks in the pre season draft other than Academy upgrades and that may be restricted to just the one if we keep Wicks or Bell on the rookie list.

Quiet a few coming out of contract. Feel like we will keep some players not at AFL standard just to reduce our player turnover.

20 players out of contract still. 11 on the senior list and 9 on the rookie list. 5 are earmarked for retirement (4 on the senior list) and 3 are mid season pick ups.

So a big clean out of the rookie list either via promotions to the senior list or via delistings to fit the mid season pick ups and to allow space for the rookie draft.

If our priority is not a first class ruckman then more of the same next year, impossible to win if you don't get first touch.

Menzel has done all thats asked of him.. since getting over his injuries he has played every game and proven his body can hold up somewhat. Been a bit stiff to get dropped a few times, hasnt set the world on fire but hasnt been terrible, and really started hitting the score board in his past 2 games.

Considering his low cost salary, its a no brainer to give him another year and i think the club will

Give him 2 as a sign of faith. Will take him right into 30

Yep agree Menzal has been getting better as his match fitness improves. Id be happy to re-sign him.
but id also be happy to include him in a trade. A fit, experienced player with good goal sense and a cool head may hold some worth for certain clubs.
We have a few medium forwards already ie. McCartin, Dawson, Haywood and Kennedy may play more in the forward line next year.

Yeah, he could play at all the clubs that didn’t want him last year!
