how in the world did we end up with alex woodward ?
is it just me or is anyone absolutely wrapped to have scored him so late in the draft .
alex is a tough nuggety ball winner ( most clearances in the TAC 2011 ) , PLUS , he is the 2011 TAC premiership captain !

With the teachings of our gun " premiership " on ball brigade of mitchell , sewell and lewis , in assosiation with the hardness of our awesome captain hodge , this kid is sure to be a winner for us ?...
throw in the help of changa who in his prime was a gun and look out comp .
some people may be worried about his height but i am not in least bit worried .

alex woodward - 175 cm
sam mitchell - 179cm
greg williams - 176 cm
daniel kerr - 175 cm
tony liberatore - 163 cm

to name just a few .
he is already listed as being 80kg which is on parr with kerrs height and weight .
if he is keen enough , this kid will feature next year .

You're not the only one to rate him.

If he cracks a game in the ones next year, he'll have done bloody well.

The words 'a natural footballer' keep coming up when people talk about him.

And that's got be a good thing.

The real lesson from Moneyball was not how the geek thought but how most traditional recruiters are so conservative and act like sheep.

IF Woodward slipped due to height then we may well have a winner.

First off the bat i'm not saying he will be as good as the following but he reminds me so much of the Mitchells and Blacks.

Their not quick, their not tall and recruiters seem to wonder wheather they will be able to make the grade.

They forget one pretty important attribute they can bloody play footy very very well. In the modern style of contested footy there will always be a place for the tough hard uncompromising player who doesn't look flashy, wont run 16 on a beep or 2.8 for 20 (no disrespect to Hill either).
Hawthorn i believe have snagged 2 in the last 2 years in Hallahan and Woodward. I can't see either playing much senior footy over the next 2 years but when sewell and Mitch are ready to retire you may just have 2 gems waiting in the wings.

I think any players that we can bring in to give Mitchell and Sewell a rest from the hard clearance work during the year to get them prime for finals time is key.

The main reason why I hated it when JK3 decided to go to Sydney.

Also you can never underestimate the extra free kicks the shorter players get. It's not a big factor but it's there. Especially with the rotations and zones. Taller and shorter players meet more often.

Someone mentioned I think that woodward is believed to have limited upside (2nd or 3rd hand from some recruiters). I have never seen the bloke so have no idea if he is the 2nd coming of Ablett or just another Tim Hazel.

But if what was mentioned is close to the truth, that could be the reason. But then Sam Mitchell after winning the Morrish medal was overlooked by all 16 clubs in the National draft, preseason and rookie. Then he played a year at Box hill and we then snapped him up. At the time recruiters prob thought he had limited upside, to slow and to short. One thing Woodward doesnt seem to be is to slow though (1 up on Mitchel same age).

Great movie moneyball. I loved it the other night. It shows that thinking outside the square does work.

From the comments above I'm very excited about Edward Woodward. This kid sounds like the likely type we need. Head over the ball and go in hard. I predict a Hawk fan favourite already

With you on this count - first thing I thought after seeing the video was that, though he lacks Black's polish.

He has genuine athleticism as well, something Sam and Simon don't.

Hope he develops well for us, we'll need his ilk to come in for a few games this year and really show something. No point making finals if you just limp in, the Cats really rammed that point home this year.

He may not be seen as someone with much of an upside, but if it's true that he's a natural footballer he'll do just fine. Natural footballers are already a step ahead of others with a perceived greater upside.

Just on the free kicks to shorter players - Puopolo did very well out of this. Almost Selwood like in his ability to draw high contact...of course, Puopolo isn't ducking.

Haha. Puopolo has to jump to get tackled high.

He is best mates with my Brothers Best mate kid and apparently he is a real GUN..............:thumbsu:

Good then we can expect him to go with a BANG :D:D

BTW, the real lesson from Moneyball is that the markets for sports talent are highly inefficient. As a result teams that exploit these market inefficiencies by investing in players with attributes that are undervalued have a chance to compete with teams who have much more money to spend than they do.

If he has been undervalued because of his height then that'd be a mistake. Great players seem to be very good or great in their kicking, competitiveness, speed and endurance. Seems height is of secondary importance, unless you're a ruckman. If you think about what would make Cyril a truly great player it is increased endurance, not an extra 10cms in height. At least Woodward seems to have good natural competitiveness and speed - that's a good start.

Stuff endurance for Cyril, fix his hamstrings.
