Newton definitely needs to work harder without the ball in his hands. Someone needs to sit him down in front of a tv and show him some footage of Reiwoldt's workrate. Not saying he could be a quarter of the player Reiwoldt is, but if he applied that sort of workrate off the ball, he could easily find himself a permanent spot in the side in years to come.
As for Miller, he does not deserve to pull on the red and blue until he starts dominating down at Casey, or at least until we eventually forget his dismal performance against Hawthorn.

Ok lets forget this argument for a minute. Does any player deserve another game with 4 touches? People are bagging Bennell and saying he should be dropped, maybe, but Newton should be ommitted before Bennell.
For **** sake here is a back pocket player playing forward because juice couldn't get a kick!
He is a dud!
If Newton is on our list next year I will not renew for my 16th consecutive season as a member!

This is the most sensible thing written in this thread so far.
Choosing between Newton and Miller is like trying to decide whether an ice pick in the knee is better than one in the elbow - they both suck and you wouldn't wish them upon your worst enemy!!

Newton's in the side as a second ruck more than a forward cos he can jump a bit, so really only Martin or Spencer could replace him. I've never seen Miller show any jumping ability, but I would be interested to see how he goes in the ruck. He was second ruck along with Holland when White was All Australian and I thought he showed a bit because he can compete physically, but they haven't used him there since.
Can't wait to see Gawn in action cos he can play forward and is a monster.
Bennell was better than Newton and I do think Newton was our worst player yesterday and if Sylvia wasn't suppose to be coming back this week I would keep the same team but Sylvia is a walk up start and Newton won't make way for him cos that will leave us with no one to help Jamar when Jamar needs a rest.

Mate I respect your opinion but how on earth this theory about Newton being a back-up ruckman to Jamar has started is beyond me. He had 1 tap! I just can't understand all this anger towards Miller but all this love for Newton and to be honest not 1 post has had real evidence suggesting he should get a game let alone be on our list. Miller is far more important to our team than Newton. I've never been so frustrated about a player being on our list before.

I honestly believe Brad Miller is played out of position and his ideal position is a leading forward towards the middle of the ground providing the quick handball or kick option to the next forward. The problem with him is that he just doesn't kick enough goals. Newton needs to play as out and out F/F and when he doesn't get the pill he's at least putting pressure on the running defenders. But if I was Bailey I would give Newton 4 games to prove himself ,if he can't, bring back Miller or Watts. We're a developing young side lads , why not experiement???

I really can't argue about how useless Newton is. I don't like Newton but I am far more frustrated with Miller. He's the reason why I changed forum's.
The problem we have with selection is that the VFL doesn't start their season at the same time as us. We have no VFL form to look at. Casey played an amatures team. Watts, Garland and our emergencies didn't even play and if a Martin did star then who cares cos we were only playing against some amatures.
The VFL has to sort this out, thank god we played well so we really don't have to try and put some VFL players back in the team with no VFL form guide lines.
I think the only 3 players that are a chance to play are Sylvia who's a walk up start, Rivers who I have question mark's on and Spencer who was embarrassing against the Hawks. Spencer or Newton? does it really matter.

Fair enough, how about we de-listed him and if it wasn't for the 2 year contract we offered hi he wouldn't be playing AFL right now! Is that true or not? Not 1 other club wanted him, not 1 but we should be patient with him, you are a moron, he is a spud.

Probably you can just deal with the fact he IS on the list for this year, accept that he will get games to prove himself and that it's very unlikely that him and Miller will play in the same side.
You've written Newton off as a player after 6 years, yet how long has Miller been in the side for?
My call earlier in the thread was that he kicked a goal and got a good tap...yep not much obviously statistically. But my opinion is that he played his role in the team. What was his role? I think it might have been as leading decoy forward to create space for Petterd and Green, which looks like it might have worked well. He also backed up Jamar in the ruck...probably his mission was to compete and not let Jolly/Fraser dominate, which I think he did.
So I don't think you can say he was shocking simply because he got 4 possessions and 2 hitouts. Look at his role in the team and how the forwardline functioned with him there and on the face of it...it did!
