Hello all,

You have probably noticed and may have read views in this thread that the board would benefit from a harder approach on personal insults, slurs, attacks and the like on this board.

From the moderators perspective, clear incidents of breaking the forum rules are fairly easy to deal with through the infraction system and this will continue to be the case. If you break the rules (see here) you can expect to be infracted. Over time infractions add up to enforced time out from posting on the board and, eventually, can lead to a permanent ban if enough points accumulate.

Other examples of behaviour are less clearly breaches of the board rules, however, are subtly (or not so subtly) stirring up a culture of sniping on this board. We want this forum to be a place where everyone feels welcome, and so although sometimes one can 'get away with' this sort of posting, we want to strongly discourage it on this board.

Harsher approach until Round 1 (at least)

Mostly the moderators take into context the poster/s and the circumstances of an issue before dealing with it. But until Round 1 the moderators will be taking a slightly stricter approach to personal attacks. Personal attacks are commentary about the poster rather than the content of a post or the debate at hand.

Of course, there is no objective line drawn here and there will always be grey areas - so before you post, please think to yourself whether contributing to disunity on the board. If you want to make a positive public statement about your commitment to a higher standard of interaction on the board, consider signing The Pledge if you haven't already done so.

Here are some examples:

OK: "I disagree with your opinion because..."
Not OK: "If you think that you know nothing about footy."

OK: "That's incorrect because..."
Not OK: "You're an idiot."

OK: <not responding to a post>
Not OK: <pejorative gif/meme>

If you take the green approach, you'll be fine. If you take the red approach you can expect some moderator action.

Please do not reply to offending posts, but use the report button.

Also, think about how you use the "like" button on this board. The feature exists to enable support for viewpoints without having to type "I agree" (or similar) when you have nothing else to add. We are seeing some examples of people abusing the function somewhat by liking posts which are critical of another poster rather than presenting a particular argument. Avoid this, it's not helping matters, makes you look partisan and risks us having to consider removing your access to the like function.Hopefully this will restore the board and sub-boards to running smoothly for their purpose.

If you have any queries with this approach or any other matters, please take it up with a moderator or BigFooty admin via PM.

Cheers,
