Review Please remind me why we traded Dougal Howard?

Finals winning sides have guys who can mark the ball in defence......Scarlett, Taylor, Enright, lake, McGovern, hurn etc

Port now has this in hartlett, jonas, clurey, dbj, McKenzie

Although I was sad to see dougal go, he preferred fisting

It was rumoured at the time that the Saints made him an offer that was more than what we perceived his value to be and we clearly (correctly) thought we would be ok without him. Ultimately it comes down to cash and contracts with players like this. Same as Ryder, we would have kept him for one year but he wanted longer. Now he has done his hamstring (not that it couldn’t have happened to a younger player but it’s not great when old players are having soft tissue injuries).

We had a few talls in reserves in case of emergency as well (Grundy and Buzza and even the tall Lienert) and we have acknowledged during the upcoming offseason that we will likely look for some key back potential as well as midfielders.

I may be wrong but I thought we delisted Grundy and Buzza.

Joe Atley (del)
Wylie Buzza (del)
Tobin Cox (del)
Riley Grundy (del)

Jack Watts (ret)
Justin Westhoff (ret)

Hence the past tense used of “had” [emoji4]

But also they were only delisted a few weeks ago as

1. We realised we don’t need them further this season with Lienert being the back up tall and everyone else healthy and our defense being the statistically the best in the league

2. Very unusual season with covid protocols restricting their lives

Still pissed we traded first as well which put us back 2 spots I'm sure they would of still done the deal.
But as others have said can't really question CD and Cripps.
Who thinks we would of picked Pickett or Day if we kept the first instead of Bergman?
I know it's hypothetical but will be interesting to watch how it pans out.

Interesting hypothesis, never looked at it that way, as you say though hard to question our recruitment team, but this is what this is all about debating issues for a team we love!

I know it can be a bit of fun arguing about but this thread title goes against everything we’re about this year. There are better individual defenders around the league. There are better individual mids around the league and there are better individual forwards around the league. But are there better defensive, mid or forward cohesive groups around the league?

Yes. One mark.

If you think that's the first time McKenzie dropped an uncontested mark and cost us a goal this year then you haven't been watching us very closely.

Same as Ryder, we would have kept him for one year but he wanted longer.
We needed to start giving Ladhams a go. Even Roo said last yr the crows were very interested in him....... "doesn't seemed to be valued at Port". Paddy was the right call.

Doogs was one of those trades you could argue back n forth. What's done is done.... we move on.

To answer the question posited by the thread topic: Trent the “Dulmial Gun” McKenzie walked into Chris Davies office in October last year and made an ultimatum “it him or me!” A taken aback Davies registered the comment, contemplated his options for a moment, then reported to the footy department. After a 3 hour rollercoaster discussion with Ken, Bassett, KT, Koch, Chad Corne, Alfie et al, evoking the classic film 12 Angry Men, the decision was made to trade Douglas Howard. McKenzie was actually referring to Jack Watt, but by that time the paperwork had cleared and the Penske file was closed once more.

No doubt mate, but it still doesn’t cover the 200cm + forwards we need to defend.
Look I’m not hating on anyone at all, but I think there was an oversight In this department
To be fair, even CD admitted this was a concern in his last press conference. He basically admitted we're in the market for a tall back. So whilst this is a very good thread, the club has somewhat already admitted this was a mistake.

I'd suggest Howard is our security blanket to supporters fears on our game style.

2020 isn't 2019 where the tall forwards reamed us. Us system is showing we didn't need Howard.

I'm sure we will adjust accordingly if we need to

This is literally just an excuse for if we don't win the premiership this year...

Motlop and Rockliff had massive finals so now everyone needs to hold on to this just in case we lose because god forbid we just lose because another team is better...

I would’ve traded Howard even if it literally cost us a premiership(s). Sometimes you have to make a stand on principles.

I was impressed with Hartlett's marking against the Cats.
Hartlett and Rich, both taken in the top 10 in the 2008 draft, have enjoyed parallel revivals as uncompromising, intercepting and distributing HBFs in the latter parts of their careers. Hartlett's had an excellent season. Paradoxically, he's almost become unnoticeable because of his reliability and consistency. He is a far more desperate, committed, serious footballer who has high expectations of himself and just as importantly of his teammates.

I don't think they've admitted it was a mistake getting rid of Howard.

Yes, we need and would like a taller key defender, but that doesn't mean Howard was the right fit for our side.

Guess the thing will be what that mistake will cost us

Have a horrible feeling if we were to make a granny Hipwood the 40 year old lesbian lookalike will rips us apart again....
