Tried posting this in Lifestyle board without much luck so gimme some love GD.

I am taking my Wife to Melbourne (Central CBD) for her 30th for 5 days in March for our first time away from the kids and am looking for ideas or suggestions of places to eat/drink as well as any cool places/things to check out.
Having been before I am keen to check out little China for a feed and obviously will visit the Crown, St Kilda etc but when I was there in ’07 I was taken to a pub/club that was playing RnB/Hip Hop where you go down internal stairs into a kinda outdoor basement where you could buy long necks at the bar… does this place still exist and does anyone know what it is called as that was an awesome atmosphere.
Anyhow I am looking for suggestions for good places to eat and drink that aren’t stupidly priced (this is the norm in Perth City) along with some of the upper market places that are worth dropping into for a drink to check out and places with good happy hour/food deals.

Chinatown is great for a feed. If you really want to stuff yourselves check out the buffet at the Langham - not that cheap but great value.

Drinking - St Kilda, Brunswick are good for bars. Also good along Southbank but a bit of a different vibe. You can just land at those spots and walk through as many places as you like.

Crowns good for gambling - if you're not punting id give it a miss.

.

Do you mean "Melba"? I've been there a few times....I found it considerably better than Conservatory or any of the other upmarket buffet places at Crown.

St. Jeromes?

Long gone

Just looked up images and yeah that was the one... bugger

The last occasion I was there, there was no main electricity running. Candlelight illuminmated the front bar and the only toilet was dark (and filthy). A portable generator was powering the sound system. There was a tip jar with a note explaining that the managers were broke and needed money to pay the electricity bill. It was a shambles.

Section 8 is a hip little outdoor bar in the CBD that might be worth a visit.

Cheers bloke. Not even really into Hip Hop just thought it was an awesome venue and good vibe. What I would like though is advice on where to check out some good metal bands or any rock bands in general really, would even check out a really good cover band

Go to Cherry Bar on AC/DC lane if you don't mind a little dinginess.

A visit here is always a must....

Especially if you liked St Jeromes'. Given it really gives you the same experience as this post encapsulates:

I recall the atmosphere at St Jeromes to be pleasant, too.

The Esplanade Hotel in St Kilda is a popular venue for live bands. Check out the two street press magazines, Beat and Inpress, for gig schedules.
