The catatonic state when Carol gets mad at one of them is the same as when people get infected. We saw it at the lab and the bar. It seems to last about 5 minutes, with the resulting casualties. But why did 886 million people die from the initial infection but only 11 million when Carol triggered it? Maybe the virus was fatal to many people, such as Carol's partner Helen.
Did Helen die from the virus or the head trauma from hitting the ground?

Just finished the first ep. Fantastic hook. Felt a bit "The Stand" with the car crashing sort of setting in motion events (and the "outbreak" at the airbase) but I'm in.
Carol digging a grave in her backyard too

Concussion maybe? A girl at my school fainted a couple of times during assemblies. She woke up with a bad headache each time. And unfortunately got the nickname "crash helmet".

But what about the millions of other people that died during the initial infection, but not nearly as many during Carol's induced freezes?

Pretty simple, those 886 million people were probably doing something that would be hazardous if left unattended to. Driving a car, flying a plane, operating heavy machinery, etc...

In regards to the 11 million, less people were in position of danger as the hive mind operate in a more efficient way than individuals serving their own needs.

Of course, the virus may also be harmful to people who suffer an allergic reaction to it.

Wouldn't about a third of the 886 million people have been asleep at the time? Or just watching the telly on their couch or at their desk at the office. It's only 5 minutes so not many planes would crash.

It seemed like the hive mind wasn't prepared for Carol's outbursts. I'm guessing 11 million might about right for accidental deaths.

Even small planes have autopilot these days. Trains have dead man's handles. Cars, you would expect massive pile-ups on the highways. That would have been a stark image for us to see. But cars would have also crashed during the Carol induced freezes. Maybe the hive people don't do regular stuff any more, like go to the office, visit friends, go to the footy.

There is also the disturbing thought that when you sleep with someone - like Casanova McBoner with his supermodels - you're kind of sleeping with everyone... the bloke next door, your grandmother, your nephew. No interaction or intimacy with the 'others' is private.

Reminds me of Louis CK. After being outed for exposing himself to female colleagues and masturbating into pot plants, he joked how everyone has a 'thing' and even Barrack Obama knew what his thing was.

Is the dogfood guy in Paraguay immune like Carol and Casanova McBoner? Or has he somehow how managed to isolate himself to not be exposed to the virus? I think we'll see him again.

Her self recording was bloody hilarious 🤣

Also, this exchange between Carol and Zosia:

Zosia: How was the heroin?

Carol:I chickened out and threw it out.

Zosia: Probably for the best.

The delivery of the lines was hilarious.

He’s immune same as Carol I think, but before knowing who he was I had the same thought that there could be people isolated and not exposed. Maybe the hive don’t even know where they are?

I was expecting dogfood guy to show up on Carol’s door step at the end of the episode. They will definitely meet up.

Loving this by the way.

Casanova McBoner has his priorities sorted. Make hay while the sun shines.

Carol asked 'them' something like what about astronauts and people at the South Pole? and they said they had it covered. It's not clear how they know about every isolated person or group in the world who wouldn't be infected. Either way, dogfood guy has their attention.

The characters are so well written. You can totally put yourself in Casanova McBoner's shoes. You might be thinking - I can save the world - but just give me a couple more weeks flying around the world on Air Force One with my every need catered by models.
