Draft Expert PMBangers 2023 Draft Thread

Sorry to hijack your thread Bangers but it does look like the cool thing to do around here. At some point should the Dogs pass on Croft? The tall talent feels like it’s reaching a point of excess and losing all their mid tier draft picks guts the depth of your list which shows in their age profile.

It gets hard to even give games and develop the talent properly at some stage

I agree. If an early bid comes on Croft I'm not convinced the dogs will take him. I'm not as bullish on Croft as others are so I can't wait to see how he goes at the Champs.

Personally I hope we don’t pass on Croft

I think the discount and ability to use late picks to match a bid on a high end talent makes it a no brainer unless our recruiters don't value him near where the bid comes.

You never know what might happen to developing players and even if they do all come on then there is potential to rejig game plans to utilise the strengths.

Geelong have also shown that you can build a premiership list by bringing in veterans to build depth.

I don't see it happening mostly because they've got the two first round picks, at worst they'll manoeuvre a trade to still get a first round open draft prospect and at best they'll get ahead of a bid or manage to take both picks prior to it. Even with list balance in mind, it's not very often (unless you are the dog's it seems) to get the opportunity to bring in 200cm prospects with great athleticism at a discounted rate, you shouldn't just throw the opportunity away if list balance is the only worry.

And to add to it all, there's a really slim likely hood that a Victorian club is going to struggle adding anything to their list through trading, if an age gap becomes an issue then there'll always be a good option at another club begging for opportunity

Also off the back of a 25D bog game with VM. If this kid keeps producing a few more performances like this he will bolt into top 10. Not as a HB but as a future mid. History shows that kids with his kind of speed and power go early.

It depends on whether we think he can transition to defence as we still need another developing KPD, even if Busslinger becomes a KPP option (rather than an interceptor) in time.

We do have a bank of 4th rounders this year which can help.

I will die on the hill that Sam Darcy should be a KPD, clean skills out of the backline are a must given how valuable scoring in transition is, and on top of that KPD's are arguably the hottest commodity in the game at the moment. Let the athletic freaks like Croft and JUH act as 2 and 3 to Naughton up forward, and get Darcy to shine as your main key post for 10+ years

You don't think he'd get burnt trying to keep up with athletic forwards?

With how team focused modern defensive structures are I don't think it's a big deal tbh, as long as there's teammates switched on in transition that can also impact those contests it'd be fine

I thought that when he was coming into the system as well, but on early AFL & VFL form this year he actually looked a bit better forward of the ball.
He was getting ruck minutes in the VFL too before his injury

He's probably quicker than Weitering (and certainly Sam Collins). Smart key defenders cut the angles enough to be able to compensate - interceptors and 3rd tall types don't have that luxury.

Absolutely. Can he chop out in the ruck?

can't imagine a scenario where the dogs don't match unless they finish in a range where the bid goes close and stepping out of the draft is less appetising.
though suspect they'll be picking in the teens, so won't mind so much

Yeah, Darcy's got genuine ruck skills beyond just being tall. He'd have grown up learning from his dad. I can see him forming a dangerous ruck-fwd duo with English, or even becoming a main ruck if English doesn't stick around.

eagles would be nuts not to be in English's ear, but short of a flag this year i reckon he stays.

Question for ya bankers. Who’s an elite user in this draft crop. Jake Bowey and sheezal type?

Watson and Rogers jump out as the best users in my eyes from the top end, w9th Darcy Wilson not bad either but a little more prone to error.

Not top enders in my eyes just yet, but Josh Docking (Saints NGA) and Harvey Johnston are others a little further down the order with generally high end ball use

I agree we’ll almost certainly take him. Wity the 20% discount and ability to trade for points surpluses the effective discount is closer to 40-50%.

Plus the big kicker is his twin brother Mitchell who is/was 5cm taller and is with the AIS on a volleyball scholarship. You can’t tell me though that he’s not going to be tempted by AFL money in 2-3 years and a prime category B rookie candidate to go play with his brother.
