Hard to tell without anything solid to go on other than projection. In all honesty, as the game evolves to having 1-2 resting midfielders in the forward line the need for a player to be playing solely on ball is depleting. I think Smith CAN rack up those big numbers, but might not need to. Worth noting that Walsh gets a bit of a boost from getting the ball back immediately after giving off to a teammate, whereas Smith's disposal is generally more impactful and to more dangerous spots
Good to hear another opinion, appreciate the response!

Pretty much all of page 2 in this post is me and Pie 4 life arguing this lol.
The main thing is Smith is a better kick under pressure and doesn't have issues finding separation in congestion like Walsh does. Smith is also more realistic with expectations of his team mates, where as Walsh sometimes puts it to areas that, AFL players wouldn't have issues getting to, his TAC team mates struggle to get there.
Much like Brayshaw last year I also think Smith makes more of an effort to get his team mates involved
Huh? My argument was that Walsh was composed. Had nothing to do with Smith lol.

Seems to be a Sandy midfielder trait as of recently, always have great disposal and ability to bring teammates into the game from seemingly nowhere
It’s partly to do with the way Sandy look to move the football. It’s no secret we change the angles a lot, rather than going in straight lines. So our midfielders learn to open their vision. We think it helps with transitioning into higher levels.

Also with the Walsh/Smith comparison, why does it need to be so? Can't we just say they're both guns and will have long and successful careers? :p They are better at different things, and will make their respective AFL clubs very happy (unless Gold Coast pick both and they make them extra happy).

There's no fun in that

Yeah but we're talking about a draft system where a team has to decide which they like better. Making value comparisons is kind of the point of these drafts forums.

Yeah have no problem with that per say, it’s more like there seems to be a thought that you’re either in this camp or that camp. Finding faults in the other one rather than acknowledging both have strengths in their own way. I’m a huge Walsh fan, and a huge Smith fan. I like them both in different ways. It seems like the way some discussions go you need to be #teamwalsh or #teamsmith haha

Every chance we see that in the All Stars game at year's end too...

You've just summed up my problem with public discourse on any topic.

For clubs, surely this is where the "best available" versus the "needs" based selections begin to come into play.

Update on my rankings, not a dramatic amount of movement as everyone feels like they're settling into their spots now. Agin I've added the clubs they'll go to based on the current ladder to give people (myself included) an idea of the players available around their picks

Wondering what everyones thoughts on Twoomey's phantom are http://aflnation.com.au/2018/09/24/cal-twomeys-september-phantom-draft/

Quaynor and Caldwell the main ones I disagree with but apart from that it's very reasonable
I disagree re Caldwell, I think he's still well within 1st round discussions especially if the club medicos give him a clean bill of health, too much natural ability and IMO well in the next group of mids behind Walsh and Smith talent wise. If he's still there at Adelaide's 2nd pick currently I'd be disappointed if he wasn't heavily in consideration especially given he's a country boy.

Should've clarified, Caldwell as a first rounder = not my first choice but I understand why
Caldwell as a top 10 selection = definitley not for me

Pre-Trade Period Phantom Draft (First round)

Pick 1 Carlton - Sam Walsh - Geelong Falcons
H:
183 cm W: 74 kg P: Midfielder
Comparison: Adam Treloar
Reason: Walsh is a pretty nifty player, and is widely regarded as the best midfielder in the draft. He has great speed, accumlates well and knows how to find his team mates, with one of my major critiscms of him this year being that he places his kicks to be too difficult for his TAC team mates to get to, but will see those kicks pay off right away. Walsh is the type that Carlton need, a young workhorse in the middle to take some of the load off of Cripps, he could well find himself starting in the midfield in round 1 next year

Pick 2 Gold Coast Suns - Jack Lukosius - Woodville-West Torrens
H:
194 cm W: 82 kg P: Tall Forward
Comparison: Nick Reiwoldt
Reason: My personal favourite from the draft Luko is a very mobile tall forward that has the scope and capacity to play up the ground as a tall winger or link up player. The only thing I dislike about Lukosius is that he isn't a player that is going to be taking big contested grabs like a traditional Key Forward, but at the Suns Wright and Day would be the two primary targets allowing Luko to peel off and get some easier marks

Pick 3 St Kilda Saints - Max King - Sandringham Dragons
H:
203 cm W: 86 kg P: Key Forward
Comparison: Joe Daniher
Reason: Max suffered an ACL injury earlier in the year but has stayed up high on the draft boards and it's with good reason. He's a fantastic player, with his height he has great agility and speed which makes him a very difficult match up. Unlike many dominant VIC Key forwards before him, Max doesn't rely on his strength to beat defenders which is why Saints will be confident in taking him here

Pick 4 Brisbane Lions - Bailey Smith - Sandringham Dragons
H:
184 cm W: 79 kg P: Midfielder
Comparison: Jaeger O'Meara
Reason: Bailey is a fantastic midfielder that would suit Brisbane greatly, with his proven leadership he is not just the type of footballer they want but the type of person they want as well. Bailey is a player with great game sense, often hitting risky passes and regularly looking to get his other team mates involved he's similar to Andrew Brayshaw in that sense.

Pick 5 Fremantle - Izak Rankine - West Adelaide
H:
178 cm W: 74kg P: Midfielder/ Small Forward
Comparison: -
Reason:
A little miracle machine Rankine is one of, if not the, most skilled players in the draft pool this year and is capable of things no one else is. He has been brilliant all year but whether he has the size to play midfield at the next level is the concern for me, and if clubs don't think he does then do you spend a top 5 pick on a small forward?

Pick 6 Western Bulldogs - Connor Rozee - North Adelaide
H:
184 cm W: 74 kg P: General Forward/ Midfielder
Comparison: -
Reason:
Rozee has had some issues with his consistency but has really killed it in the second half of the year, and was a good contributor for North Adelaide in the SANFL finals. He has spent some time in the backline this year but has performed at his best in the forward line, while being a good link up player in the midfield.

Pick 7 Sydney Match Bid - Nick Blakey - UNSW
H:
194 cm W: 75 kg P: Tall Forward
Comparison: -
Reason:
A really talented kid that can play anywhere, there's no way that Sydney don't match a bid for him, no matter where it comes. Got a really good pair of hands and a great kick for goal

Pick 8 Adelaide - Jackson Hately - Central District
H:
189 cm W: 79 kg P: Midfielder/ General Forward
Comparison: Luke Parker (less explosive)
Reason: A young SA lad that the crows will be happy to pick up. Hately is a strange one for me as I rated him really highly early on in the year and he's dropped really only because others have performed so well. I see him starting his career as a high half forward and then moving into the midfield permanently when an older player like Gibbs or Sloane lose some endurance

Pick 9 North Melbourne Match Bid - Tarryn Thomas - North Launceston
H:
187 cm W: 68 kg P: Midfielder
Comparison: -
Reason:
An academy selection for the roos tarryn has been impressive in the TSL and in the academy series this year, while being a bit underwhelming during the championships. He's a hard one to place because of his rumoured off field attitude but he's still rated highly

Pick 10 Essendon - Liam Stocker - Sandringham Dragons
H:
183 cm W: 83 kg P: Midfielder
Comparison: Tom Mitchell (better kick)
Reason: Liam is the type of player that Essendon are looking for, a big bodied accumulator. The Morrish Medallist missed the National Championships with a broken jaw but hasn't fallen down the rankings as he's had a stellar second half of the year in the TAC Cup. I compare him to Tom Mitchell with a more dangerous kick

Pick 11 Port Adelaide - Ben King - Sandringham Dragons
H:
201 cm W: 85 kg P: Tall Utility
Comparison: -
Reason: I have Port picking the best available option here, not necessarily a need but one that is too good to let slip. There's a genuine debate for where Ben players better, up forward or down back but he's shown over the past two years that he makes an impact either way, filling in for Max for School, State and Club during the year. His versatility is something that'll attract a lot of clubs. BIG disclaimer here is that I 100% think Ben will go sooner, especially when GCS get the Lynch compo bu I couldn't justify him as a bigger need than those selected previously

Pick 12 Geelong - Riley Collier-Dawkins - Oakleigh Chargers
H:
193 cm W: 88 kg P: Midfielder/ Tall Forward
Comparison: Marcus Bontempelli
Reason: I fully expect that Geelong will be right into a player like RCD that is one of these prototype tall midfielders that can play forward. Riley is a stoppage specialist that often reads the ball off the ruckmans hands and uses his great explosiveness to burst away. While their are questions around his production I think he is someone that can impact a game without having a lot of the ball as he has very impactful disposal

Pick 13 GWS - Xavier Duursma - Gippsland Power
H:
185 cm W: 71 kg P: Midfielder/ General Defender
Comparison: Andrew McGrath
Reason: Xavier was one that I didn't rate that highly until his national champs where he was amazing, playing in a range of different roles he is just a no nonsense player that does his job, this, coupled with his exceptional leadership is what I think will attract GWS as we look for people with strong character and versatility

Pick 14 Hawthorn - Jordan Clark - Claremont
H:
182 cm W: 78 kg P: General Defender/ Midfielder
Comparison: Zac Williams
Reason: Clark is another championships bolter for me, that as well as his second half of the season has shot him up to be the top rated WA prospect. He has great speed and provides fantastic rebound off of the Back Flank. He has a good scope to play as a midfielder in the future but I can see him having a big impact off of the back flank, like my comparison Zac Williams

Pick 15 Adelaide (From Melbourne via Jake Lever Trade) - Ian Hill - Perth
H:
174 cm W: 63 kg P: Small Forward/ Midfielder
Comparison: Brad Hill
Reason: Hill is a great little player and one that projects to become like his cousin Brad (or Stephen) in the future, and, with the right mentoring, could even become Adelaides replacement for Eddie Betts as he has exceptional foot skills. Much like Rankine the biggest concern for me is does he have the capacity to become a midfielder at the next level?

Pick 16 Richmond - Curtis Taylor - Calder Cannons
H:
188 cm W: 82 kg P: Midfielder/ General Forward
Comparison: Robbie Gray
Reason: Curtis is a great player when he's on but has struggled with consistency throughout the year but if there's a club that could get him to find that consistency it's Richmond. Not much else to say, if he can find that consistency then I have no doubt he'll be a star

Pick 17 Collingwood - Bailey Williams - Dandenong Stingrays
H:
198 cm W: 95 kg P: Ruck/ Tall Forward
Comparison: Nathan Vardy
Reason: Fairly obvious that a Tall Forward is a need for Collingwood at the moment, even if they did just make a Grand Final I think Williams is a great pick up for them, can play as a Tall Forward until Grundy gets a bit older and then shoulder ruck duties. Also allows the McClarty to return to defense

Pick 18 Gold Coast (From WCE via 'Worst Trade Ever') - Xavier O'Halloran - Western Jets
H:
186 cm W: 82 kg P: Midfielder
Comparison: Trent Cotchin
Reason: Great leader who makes every possession count when he plays, O'Halloran is going to be a great get for Gold Coast, and one that will fit into the culture they'll be trying to build
