As we all know we are running pretty much at 100% for our salary cap. What would Pods be on when he is officially on the list next season? Would that cause further problems?

Obviously he wouldnt go from 40K to one of our highest paid (I guess depending on how the rest of his season pans out you never know), but what ramifications could signing Pods have - He would certainly be on more than a first year 18 year old.

don't know if you read this and if it's relevant:

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-ne...n-a-slim-rookie-pay-packet-20100511-uuvz.html

I'd be guessing we'll try to sign him sooner rather than later - at the moment he's more of a fascination, but if he finishes on 70 goals at the end of the year he might attract more attention. I don't think he'll be on big money though - if he gets more than $250K next year i'd be surprised.

I have a speculative theory: Geelong pays Pods minimum now, as a listed player to keep him on the park living his dream. He has a MOU in place with the club that they keep him on the fitness team full-time after he quits. He signs a monstrous contract as a conditioning specialist as reward for his years of service at economic pay.

Would never happen :D

Would be excellent if he could stay at the club in a coaching capacity in 2-3 yrs when he retires.

I doubt he'll get $250 but he'll certainly get a significant raise if he goes on the senior list...say $150 maybe which is triple his current base salary. I would say guys at the lower $$$ contract end is probably what Pods will get too, so I'm guessing it won't be heaps.

I think that's fine, really so long as he is given an assurance he can have his old job back in 2 or 3 years when he retires (which is totally legit since he's totally qualified for that) then I'm sure he would be happy to play on that sort of contract, doesn't strike me as a money hungry bloke.

Anyway this is all guess work, I am guessing like a lot of other player's contracts this year, Pods's will be "in principle" because the final $ figure won't be able to be inked until the end of the year, maybe even until it's known who is retiring, so we know how much room we have.

Chappy, Ling, Enright, Rooke and Podsy himself qualify for veteran status next year right? (all born 81) That should be enough to cover them hey?
Pods doesn't b/c he hasn't played for us for long enough, but assuming dasher retires (which is a fair assumption) then there's a spot for someone else on the vets list (i.e. ling/boris) which frees up a bit of cap.

Oh, so there is only a certain amount of spots on the list? Couldn't they take Dash off if he doesn't retire and put Chappy on (assuming he earns the most $) And games played also counts towards being a vet?

Veteran Players

Under AFL player rules, each club may nominate or list any number of what are called Veteran Player’s.

In order to be eligible for classification as a Veteran a player must have been the age of 30 as at September 30 in the relevant AFL season and be on the primary list of the AFL club for at least 10 years or in the case of Port Adelaide since the inception of the club.

From 2006 there is now no limit on the number of veteran players a club can list, as long as the player meets the required classification.

So Chappy, Ling and Boris are eligible (as long as their B'day is before Sept 30)

There is no limit, however for more than 2 veterans on the list, the % gets reduced. I.e. let's say you have scarlo and dasher on the vets with 50 % of their salary covers. If you put Ling on as the 3rd, the % of the other 2's salary that's exempt becomes less. So unless your 3rd veteran is your highest paid player by a fair distance, it makes no sense to put him on (i.e. you are worse off).

Once they are on there, they're there until they retire unfortunately.
