The origin of the name Adelaide. Tell all ya friends

Adelaide is the English form of a Germanic given name, from the Old High German Adalheidis, meaning "noble natured".

The modern German form is Adelheid, famously the first name of Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, queen consort to William IV of the United Kingdom, for whom many places throughout the former British Empire were named.[citation needed]

Talking of parallels and useless trivia, did you know that the length of the 60th parallels, both north and south, is only half that of the equator? Something to do with the bulging of the planet supposedly.

A right angle triangle with a 60 deg angle equates to the long side or hypotimuse being exactly twice the length of the short side. So a radius which is half the size has half the circumference. But someone probably has explained that.

According to Google Maps, it takes roughly the same amount of time to drive from New York to Los Angeles as it does to drive from Sydney to Perth: 41 hours.

Nope but nearly did back in 2005 to come to melb to watch eagles play grand final. Ended up flying to auckland and back to melb

Harare to Vic Falls is a great trip. It takes you two days, you get sleeper cabins, you start at night in Harare, overnight to Bulawayo which you then have a day in before another overnight trip to Vic Falls. The train is proper old school with a dining and bar carriage as well so you can piss on until all hours.

Love trains. Managed to score a first class cabin all too ourselves from Ann Arbor to Chicago (some train staff took pity on the 7 of us looking for seats together on a packed af train- then next minute FIRST CLASS das it)- had a great time.


When i went to Sydney last i Looked into going via train, but left it too late. Prices went up and it was cheaper to fly. Yeah fk that dont wanna go via train THAT bad..

I've done Perth to Sydney in 1994 (?) - left boxing day and into Sydney by the 29th. It was long hard driving. I'd do it again but taking my time.

Also done Montreal to Houston (so north south through most of thee east coast USA). Took about 6 weeks and that was great.

It is illegal to own a rabbit as a pet in Queensland, however it is legal in New South Wales. I wonder what happens on the Gold Coast's NSW/Queensland border at Tweed Heads and Coolangatta?

Perhaps Bishop Brennan from Father Ted could take up the role of Archbishop of Brisbane? He was terrified of rabbits, and in one memorable episode he paid the parochial house when Ted, Dougall and Mrs. Doyle were dealing with a large number of rabbits at the property, trying to convince the bishop that they grew lettuce indoors in a cage. Of course, it was Dougall who saved the day in the end, rounding up all the rabbits and putting them in the last place anyone would think he would - in Bishop Brennan's bedroom.
