Was reading the FAQ today and realised that this thread about Poker Goals for 2007+2008..

http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=289752

bought back a lot of good memories and was quite good to see how far I had personally come as a poker player...

Me 4 years ago...

Im only a newbie to poker, having learnt the game with some mates at the uni campus I stay at.

Playing with 5 other people Iv won about 3 times out of 10 with a few seconds as well so Im going alright.

Played a bit on pokerstars (not for cash yet) and have made a couple of final tables in their playmoney events for Omaha, Stud and Hold em.

For 2008 and I want to go to the Casino a few times (first time will be tonight) and try play a bit more seriously and build up a proper bankroll with PokerStars.

Looking forward to it to be honest.

That was me about 1 month into playing poker... Going from playing 25bb 6max SnG's to being IMO one of the better players at Burswood and in 2010 was for a little while in the top 0.1% of tournament players on PokerStars over a fairly small sample.

So I thought I would create this thread so we can set ourselves some goals for 2012 both on and off the live and virtual felt, and with encouragement from each other acheive our goals...

So for me in 2012

LIVE POKER

- Play 1500 hours this year in cash games
- Have at an absolute minimum the same bankroll at the end of the year as I have now
- Stop going to home games where I play in a way that gives me no positive edge
- Seat select a lot better
- Post more hands on 2+2 and here
- Play a higher % of long sessions of 10hrs plus
- Pay more attention for the first hour of a session
- Prop bet a lot less

ONLINE

- Play 0 hands of online cash
- Play very few tournaments (Probably a couple TCOOP events only and the odd Sunday Mill)

LIFE

- Live better and healthier (less 4am Maccas trips to be sure)
- Get more involved in social sports and restart my indoor soccer team
- Focus and discipline at university.
- Drinking a lesser % of the days of the week.
- Get absolutely no work done during the Olympic Games :p

So who has their goals for the coming year?

Hopefully I can be you in 4 years time!

I've been playing for about 3 months, won a 40 person live tourney in my 3rd game, have struggled online so far so I too would like to build a proper bank balance (only signed up at pokerstars so far). Hopefully I can be you in 4 years time!

I would like to improve:

Post flop play - extracting as much value as a I can for my winning hands lay down my losing hands to minimize damage.

Improve online play to the stage of tiny profit.

Make the money in my local 60 person live tourney - 12k prize pool.

Get more involved on 2+2 and try and modify my game to be a solid player.

Basically improve my whole game - still in a huge stage of learning. I will continue to play and study the game as much as I can!

Ash, I'm interested in your apparent dislike of online poker. What in particular don't you like?

Do you just find that it is an easier game to beat? Or do you just enjoy it more?

Do the higher hand per hour rates you can get online not interest you?

Anyway my goals:

To take my poker a lot more seriously, it is currently just bit of a hobby.

Gain an understanding of the practical uses of poker tracking software so I can make playing online more viable.

Actually create myself a poker bankroll. (I'm currently just playing when I 'can afford to lose'.

^ Yeah! Tasmanian Eels supporter, I already like you Trigg, especially if your name is after Frank Trigg ;)

My goals:

Short term (within 2 months):
Read 5 more poker books.. twice.
Get the basic maths down pat.
Develop an attention span, I will do this by making 100x my starting stack of play money, doing this by using all good habits and not breaking my gameplan.
Cognitively try and develop an immunity to tilting when luck goes the opposite way, was pretty good at it in my magic playing days.
Understand basic tells, eg; people over betting and underbetting.
Gain a better understanding of how other players perceive me as a player.
Start multi-tabling 6+ tables (freeplay poker)
Confidently start playing 20nl SnG.

Long term (end of the year):
Multi-tabling cash games
Be close to playing 200nl SnG's
Be earning $1k a week playing online poker.
Start playing live tournament poker and cash games.
Be able to confidently say that I made some cash for my Bankroller.

Ash, intriguing to see where you started and where you've now gotten to. Always good to be reminded that others who are more advanced in their abilities were once in the same place. In addition, it's important for those who are more advanced to remember they were once newbies themselves. :)

No lofty poker goals for me; I've always been a 'weekend hack', pretty much playing micro stakes only. However, since I started playing on Stars in '08 I've kept track of my tourney/SnG results and graphed my profit/loss line. Alas the line trends in the downward direction with the occasional upward spike. Swings will happen of course but I guess my goal for the year is to flip the graph and have more upward trends. As part of that I've stuck to just $1.50 9-man NLHE SnGs this year, with the intent of focussing (for now) on just one type of game and seeing where that gets me.

I had a look at the 'online school' on the Stars website and there's a series of bankroll builder challenge videos. The one I saw had you start with just a $5 roll and working it up to $100, beginning with 45- and 90-man 25c SnGs. That's also something I'd like to try at some point.

There are a few reasons why OL poker at the moment doesnt really do it for me.

1) I tend to not care about my play when I play online compared to online, since I have dont really have the right disciplined mindset required to grind out the hours OL compared to live, where I can relatively easily do 12-16hr plus sessions at very close to my best

2) I find poker really boring, and struggle to put in "n" hours of poker a week I need to be doing. As such, I shouldnt be wasting "poker" time online compared to actually getting my butt to Burswood

3) I live a 3 minute drive from Burswood casino, so the travel issue is no factor compared to one friend of mine who lives about 45 minutes away and as such needs to always put in 6hrs plus to really justify the 90 minute total trip.

4) I have a really good live sample of around 3k hours which show my winrate to be x. Online, because I have never really got my arse into gear about it, I actually have no idea what my expected hourly earn would be because I have never tracked as well as a I should have with PT or HEM. However Im pretty sure I am more profitable live compared to my current poker abilities would be online either playing either cash or tournaments.

Dont get me wrong, I like the concept of online poker, but at the moment it doesnt really suit me to be putting in a lot of OL hours and hands. When I do graduate and get a real job I do plan on taking OL more seriously, not for a living but certainly making more of an effort to be a winning online player...

Not a bad start to 2012 for me. Was a bit bored Sunday so deposited some money into Pokerstars, played a $100+9 event and ended up 2nd from 280.

My biggest cash by an absolute mile, so pretty stoked.

^ Nice work. :thumbsu:

Haven't played much in the last 6 months or so, I haven't really set any specific goals just yet. However, I'm really keen on becoming a student of the game again, and taking advantage of all the quality information on Poker there is on the net. Looking forward to reading through some of the threads here and posting some questions.

That, and a bit of self-discipline to not play stakes that my bankroll can't support...

LIVE POKER

- Play 1500 hours this year in cash games

I only got 1200 hours in this year, but that doesnt include tournaments

- Have at an absolute minimum the same bankroll at the end of the year as I have now

Thankfully because of the score in Melbourne I have a little bit bigger bankroll then I have now

- Stop going to home games where I play in a way that gives me no positive edge

Have stopped going to homegames completely because I am a spewtard in small homegames

- Seat select a lot better

I can say I have been game selsecting better

- Post more hands on 2+2 and here

I have stopped posting a lot of hands because its not really worth the time for the most part

- Play a higher % of long sessions of 10hrs plus

I think this is going alright, I am playing less sessions, but the sessions are longer

- Pay more attention for the first hour of a session

Going okay I guess, but could improve

- Prop bet a lot less

Failing

ONLINE

- Play 0 hands of online cash

Success

- Play very few tournaments (Probably a couple TCOOP events only and the odd Sunday Mill)

Success

LIFE

- Live better and healthier (less 4am Maccas trips to be sure)

Improved a bit, but still want to make more of an effort to lose a bit of weight

- Get more involved in social sports and restart my indoor soccer team

Indoor team got restarted which is cool. As well as playing indoor cricket

- Focus and discipline at university.

Ended up dropping uni for the year. Planning on changing major this year in an effort to get back full time

- Drinking a lesser % of the days of the week.

Going pretty well with reducing alchol

- Get absolutely no work done during the Olympic Games :p

Confirmed
So who has their goals for the coming year?

Not too bad I guess, acheived most of these things.

This year I want to set a proper weightloss goal, actuall get back to uni, and stop playing poker for a living after this year. But I guess we will see

From a poker point of view a top 2 finish for ANZPT leaderboard would be cool. And winning the Aussie Mills

I'm a major anti goal setter but I always have some in my mind

I failed most of them though I'm not unhappy about it.

I wanted to play 1k hours but only logged about 600

I didn't have a number in mind but I wanted a better hourly than 2011 which I got and was pretty happy with but still has room for improvement

Wanted to play more PLO, but I just ended up playing in 50/10 and 10/20 games I'm not rolled for and had swings I kind of felt like I wanted to experience but now wish I was a bit more controlled

Wanted some decent final tables; bubbled Aussie Millions $1600 event FT to Spiedel, FTd one of the 100k grnts for 5th 7k making a bad ICM mistake to bust, also shipped the $200 WW for 4k and made some smaller scores.

Wanted to travel for an event, didn't

Wanted to play more bigger events than I did

Like I said I don't have any goals but some expectations for 2013 so we'll see how we go

Good luck all

I've always though either Perth or Adelaide for the anzpt, I'll def consider it

Will be buying a house over the next couple of months so that'll have an effect on my options

Just notices there's another ANZPT stop for Melbourne this season with a 1k $750k grnt

I noticed Crown are sneaking in single re-entry to a lot of Aussie Millions side events so I would expect a single re-entry for it as well

This is a weird threadfor sure, congratulations on coming so far Ashley.

For me I've known the game and flirted with it for a while, but only played properly (didn't even know how blinds worked 2 months ago lul) for about 6 weeks.

APL, WAPL and FullTilt at least 3 times a week.

Hopefully if I can land a job and get out my current habits of wasting money I can start getting somewhere with it.

One thing I'm not doing anymore is online poker. Never playing cash it just isn't my game. Up and down way too much.
