Perhaps he's the only senator that understands why they're in the senate.
You mean they're not just there to rubber stamp the government's legislation? They're actually there to review it, and improve on it by removing as much of the ideologically driven rubbish as possible (goes both ways), making it more workable and practical in the real world?

Shock! Horror!!!

It's a worrying trend.

You could argue any terrorist has mental health issues.

If you don't like the Australian way of life, why come here? We are a tolerant society, but...
Man Monis and now this cretin both refugees given the opportunity to live in our great country, both claimed by the authorities to have had mental health issues AFTER the event but out walking the streets and similarly the Vic Police and NSW Police claim it's not a terrorist attack but the work of a mentally deranged person when the undeniable evidence is both had grievances that Muslims were being mistreated etc that led to the attacks.

Lone wolf, mentally deranged, ice addict etc, how much longer do the Police, Politicians, certain media outlets and "commentators" think this is going to wash with the general population? Enough of the pussy footing around the issue and call it for what it is!!

And ensure that Commonwealth funds aren't overly geared towards the eastern states populations. The house of reps is about numbers on the ground. The senate is about ensuring that those numbers don't result in one way traffic. The senate becoming be so party aligned is a smack in the face to the reason it exists. I find it very odd that the lower house requires a bi election but parties can appoint representatives in what's meant to be a state based house. It's completely ass about.

Definitely a case of wait and see. But, he's at least proven himself capable in the only other job that we know he's had. No other party has a similarly good record. I cannot understand the fear.
We’ve had years of Federal governments that can’t get their agenda theough because they don’t have the numbers.

Now we’ll have possibly worse here if either party can’t get anything through without Nicks blessing.

We need a party that can put forth their agenda. it can’t be Labor as they are proven failures. That leaves the Libs and they should be given a clean run at it.

I’ve got no doubt he’s a good senator. Premier? Not so much.
Having been up close and personal to the elected elite up here, I can confidently say that you would make a very competent minister or premier. They're just ordinary people that believe in themselves and are popular within the branch. I'd doubt that many of them would be high achievers within the commercial world. They're not that way aligned. Don't believe in your party, they're not worthy of it.

Nothing will change mate, it is what it is. It's just something that polite society needs to put up with because if we identify the issue, we'd be labelled as racist. I just hope that the next time a couple of efftards try to mow down a group of innocent citizens it's at a rally to save a tree. Even then, the extreme left will continue to prosecute their argument without regard to any off-set.

But Nick's oversight has always been for the betterment of SA. That's his job and he's done it well. I agree that there's a risk if he ends up governing, but that risk is no more than a return of an inept Liberal govt or the continuance of Labour. I cannot understand the fear, I'd be embracing the change. Change is needed, and no party has the runs on the board that proves that they deserve it. Lets just let the voters decide. At least there won't be a majority incompetent government, which both major parties look like being. One is proven.

I've never had a very good opinion of Mark Latham but I have to say even though he can tend to go over the top a bit at times lately he certainly seems on the same level with a lot of his commentary to that of a lot of Australians re political correctness and the limp wristed responses we get from Governments of all persuasions to events that are really concerning many in the population.

you could argue that, but like anything there's usually a nugget of truth to most ideas somewhere.

you couldn't sum up everything the coalition of western powers have done to the middle the last 70-odd years as anything short of horrific. Both directly and through their huge support of the Saudi's - the largest force in the world driving Muslim extremism.

meanwhile your average punter either doesn't know or doesn't care and laps up the brown-scare being pushed by the trash media in this country. Not every aspect of "the Australian way of life" is just peachy either, but at the same time the Hanson-esque call for "assimilation" is far from unreasonable.

it's just layers and layers of toxicity, and really it's engineered that way. We're a long way from a solution, but if the population at large stopped buying the bullshit we'd be a lot closer.

really if you look at the demographics it's staggering how diverse and peaceful we are compared to literally any other country in the world - but if you turn on the news you'd never know it.

91% of "the egalitarian heroes of the Syrian refugee crisis" Germany's population are of German ethnicity. Meanwhile we have a wrap for being the biggest mob of racists in the world and (the tragedy of the Aboriginal people notwithstanding) modern Australia is only 60% Anglo.

No one has all the answers but some random thoughts.

Mental Health from drugs seems to be becoming a bigger issue than ever. ICE in particular appears to be a major issue we need to address as a society, because it makes many users violent... & there is also how they are getting their money to pay for an addictive habit. Rehab experts say that if you are over 25 addict, it's unlikely you will ever kick the habit. This has huge ramifications as the numbers grow.

Combine a mental illness/drug habit with some sort of political agenda like last Thursday & it's just a ticking time bomb. It's seems vehicles are becoming a weapon of choice for these copycats & there is little that can be down to avoid some idiot driving through a crowded area. Really hope the upward trend if these incidents doesn't continue, but I doubt it's now going to stop.

Then there is the foreign policy discussion & birth of ISIS terrorism, etc but that is a discussion for another time.

Just sad that some people have so much built up hate, that they feel the need to harm others. Hopefully we can now have a peaceful Christmas, but I'm worried the Israel v Palestinian conflict is about to ramp up again thanks to the USA's lack of diplomacy. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Even the lefties in Canberra don't like Shorten....

My issue with Shorten is I don't believe he is genuine when he talks. I don't actually know what he actually stands for as he says what he thinks we want to hear... hence I cannot trust him as a leader.

“I agree with whatever Julia said”
Imo, Gillard was at least a genuine leader who struggled in the aftermath of crazy Rudd & minority government. Imo, she was better suited as deputy than a leader, but I found her far more believable than Shorten.

She certainly was more believable, incompetent, but more trustworthy.

Shorten is a snake who will say or do whatever it takes to look after himself. I detest the man and if he becomes PM I’m moving to Russia.

Agree with most, but I would not say Julia was completely incompetent. She made some bad decisions, but she was under a stack of pressure with an unstable government & cleverly attacked by Abbott. Think she was a very capable 2IC, who wasn't an ideal leader, but they had no one else.

"IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHERE YOU'RE GOING, ANY ROAD WILL GET YOU THERE"
Shorten knows where he want to go - to the lodge - & will say anything to get there... even if he doesn't believe it himself. Ie. He is more concerned by the destination than the journey...
