Why do people carrying like they are supporting Footy teams when it comes to choosing a Government?

I am a proud swinging voter :D and dislike both parties equally and I voted Liberal just recently but god help them if in a few years Howard steps aside for that deadhead Costello, because my vote will swing come next election, I voted for Johnny not Costello.

Anyway I just find it bemusing that some people here carry on like their team has just won the granny.

I think I actually prefer die hard Liberal voters who harp on all day on here, than swinging voters who voted Liberal. At least they have some sort of ideological reason for voting for Johnny H, wheras you actually seem to have assesed each party evenly and yet thought the Liberals policies were better and Howard to be a reputable trustworthy Proime Minister!!! ;)

Sorry, but using the traditional Lib and Labour ideologies as a be all end all in vote decision making is stupid. I despise the typical Labor stereotype of unions and 'it's all about the worker' and despise the typical Liberal stereotype of 'if you aint got money, you ain't got a hope'.

As the title of the thread suggests - too many people treat their political party like it's a footy team (from both sides). Couldn't think of anything more stupid.

Howard's policies were far better thank you very much.

This is what makes me laugh about people who are in denial about Howard's economic management: Since Howard has been in power I have never been able to ring up a plumber, an electrician, a tiler, a roof insulator, a panel beater, or any other tradesman that I have used without having to wait a few weeks to get work done. There's pretty much been jobs available in most industries throughout Howard's time. That's pretty bloody good policy if you ask me.

There's no question that Howard is liar - even to politician standards. But you can't tell me Latham isn't just as a big a liar with the potential to be a bigger liar. The guys only been around for 10 months and has proven he's got an exceptional lieing strike rate.

you cannot compare the rodent with anybody else in this country apart from his sycophants Downer,Ruddock etc............Bush is in his league but Latham is no-where near it yet

How convenient of you chaps to continually mention Bush and Howard but never Blair. I dont recall Howard ever saying that Saddam could launch WMD within 45 minutes as Blair did. The majority of our intelligence came from other countries. Blair cant use that as an excuse. Usual lack of consistency.

Blair is an idiot as well and he will pay for it by being voted out

Demon Dave,

only an idiot would say just days before an election that he is all for saving the old growth forrests in Tassie when anyone with a half decent brain would know alot of jobs in tassie are from working in the Timber Mills.

I wonder why there was a huge swing away from labour in tassie alone?

Latham has no one but himself to blame, and that is only one example of the incompetence of the bloke.

at least he didn't lie about it, here is a bloke who decided he wanted to protect old growth forests instead of a couple of thousand jobs. These idiots who voted for the rodent are not thinking about the future, when in 50 years time when there is no forests left don't blame anyone but yourselves

Get your hand off it. Two years ago he was ranting and raving about saving those jobs rather than the forest. He took a tactical punt (read lie) and lost.

He also lied about medicare gold and a number of other issues over his 10 month period.

Now get your other hand off it. Howard has a few years left until someone else takes over. There's another 10 odd PM's in that 50 year period - between them they aren't going to kill off all the forests.

:D That's the funniest endorsement for Howard I've ever heard. "Vote Liberal for a shortage of skilled tradespeople."

That's all they've got. In a few years when people start whining about the Liberals and Howard, I'll tell them that they have the Government they deserve - led by a lying Rodent and other morally corrupt and incompetent ministers.

The best of British luck to all you tory voters!

it is a human trait that we tend to congregate in tribes, it's something buried deep within our subconscious reaching back to our caveman ancestors. during our evolution we quickly learnt that there's safety in numbers and we had to form tribes to survive the harsh environment, to fend off attacks from sabre toothed tigers, to bring down mastadons, feats no possible by individuals.

hence today modern man has a yearning to belong, to have friends, we dont like being alone. modern society is in effect a collection of thousands of different interconnecting tribes, each of us is only connected to society thru our circle of friends and other lose affiliations.

this explains the tribal nature of football supporters and the need to be at war with a neighbouring tribe. where ever you go in society you will find this psychology at work:

afl v nrl
league v union
state of origin, queensland v nsw
bledislow cup, aussies v kiwis
ford v holden
sky hooks v sherbert
skin heads v surfies
catholics v protestants
liberals v labour
ch7 v ch9
it's a deal v price is right
city v country

we all have to belong to some tribe, it will always be.......us and them.

I'm happy to agree to disagree here. I have no doubt you looked at them all and made a choice, as did I.

I'm not at all in denial about Howard's economic management - But I was talking about broad scale policies. I can live that many people only looked at economics and chose Liberal. I think they were wrong, mind you, but I can live with it. But in terms of broader policy direction and at least in terms of setting a vision/direction for the country, Labor had a platform far more in line with my personal beliefs, and that is what I chose my preference direction on. I can also live with other people disagreeing with that.

to respond to the original question it's easy, people like to associate themselves to winners

its the same reason that teams that win get more people following because they feel personal satisfaction in the win regardless of how much they put into it, it also helps them forget their meanless life.

Wow the Liberals/labour won or yeah Port won the granny
forget the fact that i am a 40 yr old labourer with no qualifications working for a guy who is 20 years younger than me and can afford all the things I cant supply my wife and kids on my 12/hr job - but at least we won the footy/election

P.S I'm not a 40 yr old labourer - just an example
