POST 2018 AFL DRAFT UPDATE

Players must be under 21 on 1 January and played 10 matches or less.

Carlton players eligible for nomination for the 2019 award (as at the end of the October 2018 trade period):

- Tom De Koning
- Angus Schumacher
- Harrison Macreadie
- Pat Kerr
- Will Setterfield

... and our new batch of draftees ...

- Sam Walsh
- Liam Stocker
- Finbar O’Dwyer (FO’D)
- Ben Silvagni (BSOS)

I think Sam Walsh and Will Setterfield will go alright.

OP from last year’s, inaugural thread ...
DRAFT UPDATE

Pick #3 Paddy Dow
Pick #10 Lochie O’Brien
Pick #30 Tom De Koning (TDK)
Pick #70 Angus Schumacher
Pick #78 Jarrod Garlett

Our first 4 picks are eligible for the Rising Star. Jarrod Garlett is ineligible as he is already 21.

I predict Paddy Dow, Lochie O’Brien, Harrison Macreadie and Harry McKay to receive nominations in the Rising Star, and Harry McKay to be top 5 in the award at year end.

ORIGINAL POST

I am inspired by the 'Proud of Silvagni' thread and our crop of young players.

We have Cripps, and in the last 2 years six other rising stars being Weitering, Marchbank, SPS, Cuningham, Jack and Charlie.

Players have to be under 21 on 1 January, and they must not have played more than 10 senior matches.

So that rules out Williamson (15 games), Fisher (17) and Pickett (10, but has turned 21). It also rules out Cuningham (11 matches) and yes a player can be nominated in a second year if eligible.
I think all of Williamson, Fisher and Pickett deserved nominations.

Eligible players on our list are:
- McKay
- Macreadie
- Polson, and
- Kerr.

I am starting this thread before our new trade and draft class, why not.

I think if McKay or Macreadie plays 15 games or so, they could both figure prominently in the Rising Star voting.

If our best young player is a mid field player then they’ll give the award to the best Key Position player from another side (probably from * ) because of course Key Position is a harder position to play.

At this stage only Setters is likely to be promoted as first XXII. Would like to at least get a nomination from him on performance, if not a leading contender to win.

TDK is being talked up as one of our key forwards, and could surprise but hard to see a place for him to start off with. Maybe a cameo performance for a nomination.

Would like for Schuey to debut (should have happened late last season for a taste) but barring injuries the back half should be set. Does the midfield beckon as was trialed in the VFL over the pre-season or HBF?

Macreadie back to being injury free hopefully. Surprised in year 1 with selection, could do so again but a couple ahead of him as we stand. KPD/3rd (or 4th) tall type or a wing position?

Kerry is going to have to knock down the door with goals in the VFL. Further improvement but able backup.
- Tom De Koning (2)
- Angus Schumacher (4)
- Harrison Macreadie (3)
- Pat Kerr (5)
- Will Setterfield (1)

Whoever we traded will become instantly better, they also might be a chance to win.

Otherwise only Setterfield and Macreadie will play regularly, assuming we can get them fit. Setterfield most likely to get noticed, only because he will constantly be referred to by his full name: “Former GWS player Will Setterfield”.

Still sh*** me to this day.
Really should let it go, though. Hogan got passed at his club by a draftee and a back man and got traded to Freo. Our guy is a club captain, and will finish his career as a one club legend (possibly with a Brownlow and as a premiership captain). Our guy is fine.

Not sure De Koning, Schumacher or Kerr will play enough games to be in contention.

Hoping Macreadie plays enough but not confident he'll have a greater chance than Setterfield, provided he can stay on the park, although the same probably goes for Macreadie. Andrew Russell, the ball's in your court...

Think it'll almost certainly come down to Setterfield vs whoever we take with our first pick.
