I was a 5 year old kid. I entered a Hungry Jacks competition where you could run onto the MCG with a team of your choice. For whatever reason (whether they were the only team I could remember or whatever) I picked Fremantle. I won the competition, got to run out onto the MCG with them (had Stephen O'Reilly look after me that day) and I've stuck by them ever since.

Great story also shows great character to stick with them.

Didn't know where to put it but we've finally cracked 50k members, 50,111. West Coast 57,400 fwiw. Good stuff.

Can't believe the change, heck it was 75% wiggles support in WA with around 17% Freo only ten years ago!

Most importantly the kids at school are enjoying being Freo supporters, from that point on the sky was the limit.

Yeah its bullshit. My GF works at an affluent Claremont school and she reckons more of the kids there support Freo. I like Freo's working class roots though but just like Freo itself it has moved on.

Having little tackers myself, and being involved with many others through some volunteer work a few years back, I can tell you that it's mostly because we're winning. Kids love winners, plain and simple.

A few years back, when Hawks won their 08 flag, Freo and Eagles were collectively s**t, every second 5-7 y/o kid I came across was a Hawks fan. The following year, most had moved on, but a few stuck with them. One of them is my friend's son and he's the only Hawks fan in a family full of mostly Eagles and Dockers fans (spattering of other clubs too).

You're forgetting they have roughly 300,000 on their waiting list though. :p

6 consecutive years of membership growth, not inconceivable to think that a flag would have us overtake them.

I feel there is more Eagle supporters than Freo ones simply because of our history. Success attracts fans and usually all the bandwagoners lol

I would guess most Freo fans come from Freo and south of the river. However, the more affluent suburbs SOR support the Eagles as I rarely met docker fans years back.

Before the Ross era the amount of crap one would get was endless, so I can see why many people would change their support to the Eagles.

Yeh we're both a younger and less successful club to date, so it's no surprise we have less supporters however the last few years would have done no harm in attracting kids.

Definitely seems that the largest concentration of supporters would be in the Freo/Rockingham/Mandurah corridor and we probably do better than average in the newly established suburbs in general with the young families.

My boys jr footy is dominated by Freo jumpers now.

Went to watch our Grandson play juniors this morning out Bassendean way and there way a huge majority of kids wearing Dockers gear. I only saw one kid wearing WC stuff. I said hello to him but he started crying - could have been my Dockers cap that put the wind up the poor little fella.

Think I know the kid, his name wouldn't have been Luke Shuey by any chance?

Speaking of demographics but in a different way.

I noticed walking to the game over the last couple of seasons since I've been back in WA, I hear a lot of Irish accents whilst walking to the game. Happy to have an Irish contingent on board and they probably couldn't support the eagles if they wanted to go to games since they were sold out long ago.

The new stadium can't come quick enough for both teams - especially the Eagles - the average age of member is 52 compared to around 40 for Freo - probably a lot given away to kids and the rest - but that is still a huge difference

Yep I remember those class colleagues who changed from Freo or Eagles to Essendon when they dominated in 2000. Well, everyone grows up one day..

One of the few (I think) fans in Canberra here.

I was originally born in Perth, but moved to Canberra in 2000.
