Best. Mod. Ever.

I'm universally acknowledged as the GOAT Mod.....please respect the title.

I don't doubt it is mate, forgive me my prejudices. As a single mid-20's male it's just very low down on my list of desirable places to live. If I had such a list I mean.

All good, not sure I'd be living here either if I was single mid-20's bloke.
Well, I didn't. I lived in Yokine back then, which wasn't that flash but at least my block of units was packed with loose women :D

I'm guessing we're going back 20 or so years here, I never should have said anything bad about Ellenbrook

I'm in Sydney now but all my family is still in Margaret River where I grew up. I hardly know any WC fans down there. Most are pro Freo with a passion. The clan are heading up for the game this weekend and super pumped.

Saw Modra out at North Point a few times back in the day. Great footy player, good fella, average surfer

Currently east I guess (Carlisle)

Grew up south... have lived south south, south, west, east, north, north north, fremantle....

just need to hit the interstate and overseas

Not sure if this has been done so I going for it. After an "interesting" discussion with an Eagles co-worker today he said that us weirdo South of the river docker morons should stay down there!!! I politely told him that I was from the northern suburbs. This got me thinking though where exactly the majority of Dockers supporters live.

I have separated the areas into: -

North North of the river - Hepburn Ave and above
North of the River - North below Hepburn Ave
Eastern suburbs - Midland, Ellenbrook etc
Western suburbs - Peppie Grove etc
South of the river - South above Armadale road
South south of the river - Below Armadale road
Regional WA
Interstate
Overseas

Good idea but I hope you realise that only about 1.5% of Freo supporters go on Bigfooty. I know it's hard to believe but...

This is very true. The south west region from Busselton through to Augusta I think the Dockers fans are majority

If the poll truly embraced the spirit of the AFL there would be a Melbourne/Victoria option.

And reading some of the responses there could almost be two polls - where you're from & where you are now.

There is a fair bit of folklore about this North vs South thing and the two Perth based AFL sides. When the WCE first entered the competition, they called themselves "West Coast" seemingly to leverage the East/West bigotry that was very prevalent then (and still seems to persist to an extent). It was the team from the West vs the VFL.

When Fremantle entered the competition in 1995 (1st game), well Fremantle was actually a place and initially many of the supporters may have also supported South or East Fremantle in the WAFL. I think it was the Eagles marketing department in conjunction with the media that decided that if Fremantle was a place that existed south of the river then its fan base must be south of the river. Based on this arguement, WCE supporters must live north of the river in the main.

In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. There are and has always been many WCE supporters from south of the river, and there have always been many Fremantle supporters from the north. Anecdotally, it would seem to be more a function of age demographic than local geography. A very large share of the WCE membership have supported the team forever and would now be getting very senior in age. The Fremantle supporter base in contrast seems to have a large proportion that were not supporting WCE at the time they broke the apparent VFL hold on football superiority - ie. a lot younger.

Have you pointed out to them that West Coast's new home base will be South of the river?

I remember reading an article on this a few years ago, from memory the biggest Dockers stronghold was Canning Vale so a leaning towards young migrant families whereas for West Coast it was some established suburb full of old white people (Maylands, Dianella maybe?). It was based on membership numbers.

Will try and dig it up, appeared in the paper before a derby 5 or so years ago.

EDIT: Well a quick google tells me my memory is a bit shit, this article is dated March 8 2014.

That is a very bad article. The main reason both suburbs have the most supporters is because they have the highest populations. Canning Vale is just about the biggest suburb in Australia as they keep adding estates and won't break some of them off and call them a different suburb. It takes 15 minutes to drive from one side to the other.

We could just rezone everything from Freo to the freeway and the new training facility and call it Fremantle and it would fix up all the stats. It would also stop the cockburn jokes.

There is definitely an element of truth in the north vs south theory. While there are Freo supporters all over the country, you will definitely find a massive concentration of them in the greater Fremantle area. And that flows on to nearby areas (mostly south of the river) where people often have a history of some connection with the town of Freo through either having worked, lived, played or watched footy or merely spent significant time in Freo at some point in their lives.

West Coast supporters would be spread all over WA (predominantly) with a few less supporters in the Freo heartland. So you'd expect a significantly greater proportion of Freo supporters to live south, rather than north, whereas WCE supporters would be more evenly distributed.

It's evident when you catch a train to the footy from Freo. For Freo games the train is full by the time you hit Mosman park. For WCE games it fills up much more slowly as you get closer to the ground, particularly from Cottesloe onwards.

Not entirely relevant to the geographic basis of the poll, but when I worked at Subiaco Oval for both WCE and Freo games as ground staff (2001-2007), I did notice a fair bit of difference in the demographics of the two members groups.

WCE members tended to be older, whiter and more male and Freo members tended to be younger, more multicultural with greater female representation. I think I heard that Freo has one of the highest proportions of female members in the AFL.

The generalisation about WCE supporters being 'chardonnay sippers' is true to an extent. Freo crowds were also noisier and rowdier, but not to the extent that WCE fans would deride Freo members as 'feral'.

Interestingly, I also found the Freo members to be nicer to me too - i.e. more willing to say hello and have a chat - but that might relate to my own biases as well.
