Draft best available, trade for needs

Unless there is a slider, which is rare, a mid 2nd pick should have 3-5 players of similar quality.

If one of those 3-5 players is a genuine spine player, I would lean that way.

So, Alleer or Williams would be my choice.

Think Van Rooyen & Bazzo will be gone by that point

This is the way.

Don't stretch for a positional need and then don't play them for 3+ years while you wait for them to develop.

We've got our best 22-28 (or so) sorted. Best available will add to this almost immediately (within a year or so) and force even more competition between spots.

Club can take flyers later on in the draft but 25 has to be best available.

Ideally a small and speedy lockdown type defender who can contain the likes of Shai Bolton and Jaidyn Stephenson who normally torch us would be my choice (easier said than done, they are rarer than Hen's teeth)
We tried playing SPS there without much success alas.

Is it too much to ask for a clone of Corey Enright in this year's draft ?

Probably best available.

We mostly need assurance that players we currently have on our list, will step up to fill positions needed now and in the not too distant future.

KPD to replace Jones or cover for injuries. We have Young but he's basically a cast off from the Dogs. Will he step up?

Ruck to compete well against the best in the comp. TDK is the likely candidate based on talent. Will he make the jump and how long will it take?

Small defender to be able to cover quick small forwards. Will we leave Stocker there to grow into the role or can we grow someone else from within? Stocker should be an inside mid for mine.

Half forward is a need. Someone with genuine X factor. Martin is in the role and Honey could play here or in a pocket. An attacking midfield goal scorer is more than a decent replacement.

Happy to keep playing/using Stocker as a back pocket type until he can build up his tank and aerobic capacity (which I am sure he will)

Owies is someone who could (at least in the short term) fill the small forward role, but it's a position we can address later, whilst we address other needs first.

If only Marchbank could stay healthy , that would be such a massive bonus for us.

A quick inside mid would be nice. Not a lot of pace amongst Cripps, Walsh, Cerra, Setterfield, Kennedy, Carroll or Stocker if he plays there. Even Dow is quick but not express.

I want Cuningham more inside/out. Inside enough to get more ball but outside enough to break the lines. Philp as an attacking winger/half forward. I see Knightmare has us taking Matthew Roberts with our first pick. Another one paced inside mid. Can play forward or back too though so the versatility aspect is a something we will like.

He has Zac Taylor going at the next pick to Richmond. Speedy and evasive midfielder. Maybe too much like Fish? Fish is the big question here. Where can we play him? Taylor is an accumulator and Fish isn't.

Angus Sheldrick is an inside bull with explosive speed. 179cm and 88kgs suggests he is a bit of a rhino. Also has a match up win over Horne-Francis this year.

What we need is anybody's guess but what I think we should 'want' is a goalkicking midfielder/forward who can run and is at least 188cm; after that, we 'need' another key forward and a KPP defender, not necessarily in that order. I don't see the appeal in smaller players, at this stage, unless there is a clear standout available.

To be quite honest I have 7 noted list needs - all important to fill in the next 12 months.

- Key Defender
- Dynamic Small Forward
- Ruck / Key Forward
- #1 Ruck
- Genuine Winger
- Pacey Lockdown Small Defender
- Dynamic Inside / Outside Midfielder

So far this trade period we have done well to fill a glut of list holes that we had. We already look more balanced, however we have a way to go.

Key Defender - we were short 2 key defenders to start the season as we used McDonald up forward anyway. We've added Lewis Young which is good, we still need 1 more. Akuei is the answer as a Cat B rookie.

Small forward - we had way too many small players particularly mid/fwd on our list this season. Clearing off SPS & Ramsay for two genuine mids Cerra & Hewett, but also Murphy, Gibbons and Betts which havent been replaced. We need a dynamic small forward to replace them (moreso replace Eddie). Jesse Motlop in the draft at #25 is my pick.

Ruck/KPF is a list need to replace Casboult, I'd have targeted Josh Cripps to fill this role but we are out of list spots. We have 1 too many medium/3rd talls on our list, next year 1 should be removed (Marchbank/McGovern) for a KPF/Ruck.

#1 Ruck is also a list need, as I see TDK as the main KPF/Ruck and Pitto as the reserve pure ruck. Mirkov is the current placeholder of this spot IMO. End of 2022 for this one, and I'd be targeting a gun ruck in a trade next season. Rowan Marshall is a perfect fit, uncontracted, but a long shot.

Genuine winger is a huge hole on our list. We rotate O'Brien, Newnes & Cottrell as our pure winger and it's not cutting it at the moment. I'd keep LOB long term, but I'm not sure he cements best 22, we need a winger to make Newnes surplus to requirements and demote LOB to first reserve. End of 2022 when Newnes OOC.

Lockdown small defender - I hold out hope for Jordan Boyd filling this list need. Regardless we need an understudy - I think Cottrell gets this role this year as a last resort for his AFL career. Cottrell the placeholder - action end of 2022.

Dynamic inside outside mid - we have 1 too many big/slow inside mids on the list. We need one more dynamic mid to improve our balance. I feel Setters is the one that is surplus to requirements to get in this different athletic profile. Action end of 2022 when Setters OOC.

Hopefully one more offseason and Austin will have stamped his authority on the list build.

TL-DR - Draft small forward (Motlop) & KPD (Akuei) - the rest can wait until next year due to current contracts.

I went for best available. There is small arguments for a few things that would make for debate.

For me a lot rests on what Charlie Curnow can do. If he can’t fire then a second key forward seems quite important As it is such a hard spot to fill on a list. I mean a key forward who is a clear winner, not a Casbault or Young type.

I thought Austin missed a trick last trade period when there were around 5 KPF options floating about in event Charlie didn’t make it. This year there isn’t really any KPF forwards of note making last year a standout.

Charlie recovered, how did Austin miss a tricK?

Its a point a view and mine is that there hasn’t ever been a situation in a trade period where there were 5 experienced forward Tall’s available.

Charlie has to be a high risk going forward With the long setback he has. I don’t doubt his ability at all but there has to be doubt on his body.

He broke down last pre season and we were caught short on a quality forward to support McKay. Casbault was clearly underdone and is really a cover player anyway at the top level. Oscar is only a cover player as well.

Anyone who watched Charlie in his first couple of years saw him jump really high and fully extend his arms high and at full pace. That made him unstoppable as an up and comer, it also increases injury risk I personally think When he does that at full pace. I loved his skill though.

On his return He eased back in probably under instruction but there was none of that trademark move on his return. Either he can or can’t.

why not insure the clubs future With a decent forward When 5 were available Last trade period. 5 servicable or good forwards, not the one he chose who is a cover player In Oscar.

If it helps I’m a fan of Austin after this trade period. Not the last one. He got it right with Cerra. I like his two other trades as well as no price was really paid.

Curnow
McKay

Pittonet
Mirkov

We need 5-6 of those playing per week plus 2 of the 3rd tall types:

Silvagni
Kemp
Plowman
Marchbank
Parks
Kennedy

There is enough height for seniors and reserves there, not counting top up players. A good injury run and we are flying.

We need to keep flankers and mids coming through, incrementally improving each position and trading out the overflow for draft currency.

If a balanced mid is one that can play inside mid, outside mid, runs forward and kicks the odd goal, runs back and defends, delivers the ball with precison and is half as good as Sam Walsh, then one of them thanks.

We already have Superman, can’t be too greedy but yes another driven, unconditional midfielder with decent aerobic capacity would be great too.

I’d say “best available” with one caveat. It must NOT be a high-talent slider who drifted in ranking in his final year with questions over effort. We have bought that story over and again and it never works out.
