See, that's the problem - I can't think of anyone in the LNP ATM who has Howard's political savvy. It is a long time until 2019 but I cannot see that their ratings will much improve from now until then because there is too much division within the party and their policies in general are much too ill-considered.

At best I expect there might be a brief improvement in poll ratings before reality ensues - unless the ALP commits a major faux pas or the LNP rolls back some of its more major policy misfires (pension cuts, Centrelink robo-debt debacles). However, I just can't see the LNP doing that ATM.

I see this said very often. I used to say it myself.

Their title means Economic liberals.

Australias dominant economic ideology has always been socialism, we have never really embraced the imaginary concept of the free market (because there is no evidence it works to do anything other than impoverish people).

Australias current primary economic argument is between foreign owned monopolies vs the workers of Australia. Guess which team the LNP are on!

I'm sorry but that's simply nonsense, and self contradictory. No one votes liberal thinking they are socially liberal. It's not subterfuge.

The Liberal party have formed government more often than any other party, so there's a real detachment between your claims that Australia is primarily socialist and the Libs are a nationalist party.
