Since the other thread on Ponting getting left out of the next ODI squad (officially "dropped", not "rested") was shut down (and seemingly deleted), as a result of some epic trolling, I'll start another one, for all to give their views. :thumbsu:

Glad Inverarity and co seem to have the cajones to make the tough calls, which is one of the major things we need, to get back to the top of the cricketing pile.

Will interesting to see what Ricky does now, whether he retires from ODI's and/or tests, or goes back to Tassie to try and get picked for Australia in ODi's again.

http://www.espncricinfo.com/commonwealth-bank-series-2012/content/story/554480.html

"John Inverarity, the national selector, said there was obvious disappointment when he informed Ponting of the selection panel's decision, and admitted a retirement from all forms was now a possibility. Ponting is expected to speak publicly about his future on Tuesday.

"He made a double-century in his last Test match and we are hoping he remains available for Test cricket, but there can be no guarantees," Inverarity said. "Ricky is going to consider his future over the next couple of days and talk it over with his family and with his manager. He's wondering whether he retires completely from ODI cricket ... and then of course there are the implications for Test cricket. "

I think it is a great call from the selectors. I Love RTP - he was a great player, and still has a lot to offer in the test team. However there are too many other people making runs, for him to get a game.

Although it would have been nice to let him play his last game in Hobart this Friday. Also bowl an over there as well......

But well done selectors.

Agree with all that, except maybe for the bowl an over part! I like the fact that they mean business though.

I also like the fact that they say the door isn't closed on anyone, too. Meaning that if Ricky wants to go back and win his place back, with top performances for Tassie, he can do so. I don't like the common "once you get dropped from the Australian side and you're over 30 odd you can never come back" attitude, as that can make it harder for everyone to make the tough calls when someone older is going through a form slump. Sometimes it is just a form slump and they can have more to offer.

Bit of a Healy move here, Ponting dropped before his home town game. Apart from the odd hiccup the new selection panel ticks all the right boxes. I'm very happy to see they share my feeling about looking towards the next WC already.

One of the greats of ODI cricket. Brilliant fielder, batsman and the most successful captain of all time.
All true. We're not going to miss his current batting, but he was still fielding brilliantly and that won't be easy to replace, nor will his leadership and experience. :thumbsu:

Yep, it was the right call. Would've liked it to have finished with a retirement rather than an axing, but you can't get everything you wish for.

I don't see any reason at all for him to give test matches away though.

Inverarity was suggesting that the big gaps between some test series might make him less inclined to keep playing, since he's been used to a continuous flow of test and ODI cricket for the past 15+ years.
I guess he's now got to decide if he wants to just play tests, or if he's prepared to play domestic cricket in between, to stay match fit and so on. That may lessen the appeal of playing on, somewhat.

punter should've been given the rest of the summer (3 more odi's and possibly finals - thats the least he deserved).

there's no coming back into the odi team now, he won't be recalled at age 37.

he may well have played his last game for australia on aussie soil.

We have an ODI series to win, though. It's a pretty competitive series and I guess they don't want to be carrying anyone that's well out of form.
Then there's the fact that Clarke is due back now (and maybe Watson as well), so someone had to make way for him.
If Forrest and Christian hasn't been doing well, Ponting may have been given more time, but they have, so they obviously didn't want to pull the pin on their momentum, especially since they're both clearly in the frame for future test selection.

i don't care how competitive this mickey mouse one day series is that no one will remember who won it in time to come.

they only picked a 13 man squad for the remainder of the series, they could've quite easily retained him and made it a 14 man squad.

whether ponting played all of the remainder of the games or rotated with perhaps warner now that watson back - should be the least of what he deserved.

it'll be interesting to see if he retires from test cricket now.

If it's a meaningless series then Ponting won't lose any sleep about not being a part of it.
Cricket Australia are apparently ultra keen on getting the no.1 ranking in all forms of cricket, though, so I guess they don't see it as "Mickey Mouse" and nor would those who are playing in those teams, or those paying their money to go to the games, etc.
Just because you don't rate something doesn't mean that no-one else does, or that it's not important to anyone else.

look, i want to see the aussies win as much as anyone (and i still do even though its mickey mouse).

i'm sure the people of hobart and wherever the remainder games are being played would've loved to have said goodbye to punter.

I'd still have given him the last few games, but anyway, it's a push for the future. He looks in good form, just can't force the ball like he used to. I really don't care about this series, no one really does, so I'm surprised he wasn't given the rest of the summer. Interestingly, he's been in decent ODI form before this series.

I thing your spot on,i first thought he might be happy to keep playing tests and having more time at home but then you reminded me he will have to go through the grind and play a fair bit of domestic stuff.my tip is he might just go stuff it and finish up in everything.
