What on earth happened in the thread I started that made it so bad, it had to be shut down? It would be nice for a mod to PM me.

He has had time enough to make an announcement himself about his plans. Very impressed that the selectors have done this.

With Watson and Clarke coming back, they needed to make room for young batsmen and both the Husseys are in good nick, and Warner is 25.

We won't find someone that tough with the bat for a while, I expect, but it's the right move.

He's had a wonderful career in ODIs, as fine as anyone in the world.

Hard call but the right call.

Prob could of just given him until end of series, but what if he then goes on to make a century or a couple of 60s.
They then cant drop him an hes safe for how much longer??

Absolutely no way he could of seen it coming especially after he was given captaincy again while Clarkes out.

I agree.

Very gutsy by the selectors, but the right call.

Loved how Inverarity was honest... "door is never closed on anybody but it's a strong indication there"

Ponting (and Hussey to an extent) were given more time in Tests because no one really demanded that a spot be theirs - Hughes, Khawaja, Marsh (and probably others?)
Those 'fringe' players didn't make themselves undroppable.

In the OD side and this summer though, those one-day 'fringe' players in David Hussey, Dan Christian, and now Peter Forrest, have played well enough that they don't deserved to be dropped along with the woeful scores and scoring-rate of Ponting, so it forced their hand a little more.

Wonderful career in ODI's, 13500 odd runs at Number 3, 3 World Cups, all time great in the field, world champion sledger, you wonder what else he wanted to achieve, but he is such a competitive bugger he went out kicking and screaming.

Cheers to a fantastic ODI career Punter. :thumbsu::thumbsu:

...and hope there's still a few more Test runs in ya'.

I said when he started making runs in the tests that he'd done so much to get there he should retire. Now he may be remembered like this.

I'm devastated.

Sounds like the selectors have wanted him gone from the ODI team for a while now anyway. I remember him saying immediately after the Adelaide test how he ducked into the selectors meeting and made sure he was selected in the tri-series, something like that anyway.

The selectors should’ve given him the series off, he was clearly mentally fatigued following the scrutiny he was under all for months to turn his fortunes around. He did, but in doing so he burnt himself out and needed a rest to recharged the batteries. Sure he failed dismally 5 consecutive matches, but it doesn’t mean he’s lost it, it means he’s just in need of a rest. To say that he’s done in ODI’s is not only harsh, but a huge slap in the face to our greatest ODI batsman of all time. Give him the rest of the series off, and give him the ODI’s in the West Indies to save his spot.

One of the greats of ODI cricket. Brilliant fielder, batsman and the most successful captain of all time.
Is there a better ODI player in history?

punter should've been given the rest of the summer (3 more odi's and possibly finals - thats the least he deserved).

there's no coming back into the odi team now, he won't be recalled at age 37.

he may well have played his last game for australia on aussie soil.
Damn straight.

Bullshit that they didn't give him the rest of the ODI Series; tell him to retire from ODIs after it.

I missed seeing him bat in Adelaide because the wankers made him open (and don't get me started, again, on the scheduling of the Test match); if he retires tomorrow, I'll be shattered.

Ponting will go down as the greatest ODI captain of all time, one of the very greatest batsmen, and the best fielder - alongside Jonty. Hats off to a fantastic career, and thanks for the memories, Punter!

Ponting is horribly out of form with the bat in ODI cricket.

He's not the (real) captain any more, and while you'd like to see him go out on a high he is 37 years old and has had plenty of opportunities to do so and made a conscious decision to stick around after stepping down from the captaincy.

Let's not forget that a 36 year old Steve Waugh was dumped whilst captain having averaged 28.7 in his last 6 innings. Ponting is averaging 3.6 from his6 matches this Summer...

While I think it was probably the right decision, I don't see how anyone can think he saw it coming when the same week they made him captain.

To ask him to do that when they were in full knowledge is at worst mixed messages of incompetence and at best downright devious.

Unfortunately it speaks good of no one, despite the fact that he's been one of our best ODI players ever Punter may well be remembered more for the way it ended (I hope not) and despite the good that they've done over the last couple of years the selectors will be remembered as much for the incompetent way in which they've ended the career of one of our greatest players. Everyone's a loser.

Right call, but they should have given him a goodbye game. At the very least he deserved that.

Im really upset to see him go. Legend of the game.

It will be a disgrace while Tendulkar is having his farewell tour all over Australia that Ponting doesn't get the chance to have one. His form in tests has been very good. Yeah people can bring up Healy as much as they like but comparing him to Ponting is like comparing an ant to an elephant.

This is how i will remember him.

Good call. Tough but fair. Deserves a send off at Bellerive (couldn't hurt to give Clarke and Watson a few more days) but I guess he isn't considered a part of the best XI anymore.

Hopefully this sets a precedent. You aren't safe if you aren't performing, no matter who you are.

Hopefully this sets a precedent. You aren't safe if you aren't performing, no matter who you are.
Only problem with that is the bowlers over the last few years had been blaming this atttitude for there poor performances.
Saying noone felt safe causing them to bowl for themselves an look for wickets nearly every ball, instead of working in tandem building pressure an bowling to the plans.

Agree its the line in the sand that needs to be drawn though, this isnt a football team with only a set number of players allocated to them, so they have to grow an nurture them in the hope they become good.

Its the Aus cricket team it shouldnt matter if your 18 or over 40 if your one of the top performers in domestic cricket you should have a chance to play for your country.
An if your already playing for your country but having a rough trot an look to really be struggling you deserve to be dropped an replaced by inform player.

Yes they need to expose young players to this level so there ready for future tours/championships but that can be achieved with Aus A tours an a few meaningless 1dayers here an there.

It's kinda wierd...being that I'm only 25, Ricky is one of those players who I grew up with watching his whole career, back in the days I use to think that one day I would play for Australia (haha fat chance!).....going to be very wierd without him around the ODI side (kind of the same feeling I had when Steve Waugh retired).

Would love to see him go on, but you can't deny his poor form. Hopefully he goes back, makes runs for Tassie and still features successfully in our Test side.
