mixed feelings about a farewell game. on one hand you can say it shouldn't be much trouble to give him one more game. but, isn't letting him make a 5 from 25 in his last game cruel in its own way?

reckon the players might be a bit flat in hobart. but there are other ways to say farewell.

He could have given himself a farewell game at any time recently, but he left it up to the selectors to make the call. And they have.

This farewell game stuff is a non-issue.

that is true as well. this series alone should have him pause and consider while putting in performances even cameron white would be ashamed of. in a way i admire the selectors for taking the saccharine option out of his hands. a player doesn't have to play to celebrate his career. i'm sure the crowd would be just fine with seeing him driven around the boundary line or something.

Im a huge Punter fan and ideally he wouldve had farewell game/s ect or just gone through this ODI series then onto WI ect. But really the selectors were left with no choice, even just a 50 or 2 mightve given them something to allow him to see out the ODI series. Correct decision has been made, the team ALWAYs comes first.

If it results in him retiring from all forms it's the wrong move from all concerned IMO.
He's having a press conference at 11 I believe, you don't really have a press conference to announce he's playing on in tests do you? Ah well, we may never see a better Aussie batsman in our lifetime, saying i've seen all of McGrath, Warne, Gilchrist and Ponting's careers is pretty good I reckon.

Nah, crap.

The second best bat we've ever produced, and a guy who has been such a committed and passionate player and captain, deserves more than the indignity of being dropped like this.

The wankers should've given him the rest of the series - Id care more about seeing Punter play his last ODIs than I do about this entire series.

Quite gutted really. My favourite player, but good to see that the selectors are willing to make tough decisions. Now, I really hope he continues to play in the test side.

This. I haven't got a problem with him getting dropped from one dayers, but the bloke deserves to play a fair-well game, it would have been perfect with this Fridays game in Hobart.

As a mid 20's person, i can honestly say i don't remember the Australian team without Ricky Ponting. :( I hope he goes on in Test matches

Farewell games don't work. If he wanted a farewell game he should have taken the decision to retire like Warne, McGrath, Gilly, Langer etc., if he wanted the selectors to make the decision then that's it, when the axe falls it falls, no farwell games, no chance to acknowledge the crowds. He should have annoucnced it was his last summer before the tests, could have done a great farewell tour in the test series.

As it is now, he'll be lucky to get the Windies, then it's all over. Hung on for 6 more months and probably $500k, fair call to him but that was his choice.

Really hope he doesn't retire from Test Cricket, we simply don't have anyone ready to step into his #4 position yet (nor #3 for that matter!).

I think the main issue is that now he is out of ODI's where does he play his cricket between test series? After the April WI tour we go to England to play ODI's, then UAE to play ODI's before another test series late in the year.

He can't play domestic cricket here, and I don't imagine he'll be uprooting the family to play county cricket.

Other test specialists like Cowan (and previously blokes like Langer) usually play cricket abroad in the off-season. The only current test specialist I can think of that doesn't have a county to play for this winter would be Peter Siddle - which leads me to wonder what he'll be doing all winter?

Hasn't Siddle been training with Carlton over winter these last couple of years, or was that just a one off thing?

If he retires then he goes out with a double century and an average of over 100 in his last series, which was a 4-0 drubbing of India. Way to go.

Ricky , please dont join the Ch9 commentary team, please.

Fairly straight forward, he can captain with his eyes shut, other option was oen of the Husseys (who are also old, and haven't been captains) or a young guy playing in whose played what, 20 ODI's? and hasn't been a state captain.
No. If you are considering dropping someone then you don't make them captain.
