Ponting was good up until 2007, is what im saying.

Hell Dec 2001-2007 Ponting hit over 6000 runs in 60 tests averaging over 70. Ridiculous statistics. Across his first 110 tests he had an average of 59.3 with 33 tons. He was a machine for that period of time. Not to mention he's batted at three during his peak period, unlike Tendulker or, for much of the time, Lara
I also remember seeing stats to the effect that Ponting generally performed better when the Hayden Langer partnership failed than when they dominated, so he hardly wilted under pressure.

And you cant hold Pontings current performances as evidence of how he goes in a team in decline, because as a player is clearly in a steep decline. Much like other eye players (Richards, say) the career tails off at the end. If Ponting had been in a shit team much of his career I'm sure he would've done pretty well still.

And I maintain that Ponting has gotten everything he could've with his talent (much like Tendulker) whereas Lara leaves me with the feeling that, whilst he was supremely talented he could've gone a little bit better.

like i say everytime we re-ignite the ponting/lara/tendulkar debate, ricky has POOR record in India in tests. Even during his amazing streak in the mid 2000s, his record in India was pathetic and you cannot claim to be the best unless you do it in all conditions home and away. in 2001 for example, he made something like 30 runs in 3 tests, harbhajan had him on a string

anyway, i agree with other comments here that ricky should hopefully be remembered as the 2nd best batsman this country has produced. on a global scale, he is not in the same league as the great sachin

im hoping too that he sorts out this petulant and childish behaviour we're seeing too much of, and bows out in a way befitting one of the best australian cricketers

That's Why He's The Captain

A big **** you to all the haters! :thumbsu:

Re: Ricky Ponting

Brilliant innings under pressure that most could never imagine.

Champion. Went out there and made the runs when we needed him most. What was the heir apparent doing during Ponting's innings after promptly getting himself out for **** all? Probably tweeting or something.

Re: That's Why He's The Captain

Not sure how many other sports people, let alone cricketers could have done that. So much heat recently, almost everyone calling for his head, in one of the worst form trots of his career.

Pulls the finger out in a World Cup quarterfinal v the #2 ranked hosts haha, wickets tumbling around him. Aye, aye captain.

This.

Puts it in perspective really.

Haters where are you all?

Great of the game, agreed. :thumbsu:

But do you really think he is the 3rd best batsman of all time??

I think he compares unfavourably with the following...

Sir Don Bradman
Sir Jack Hobbs
Sachin Tendulkar
Viv Richards
Brian Lara
Graeme Pollock
Jacques Kallis
Kumar Sangakkara (epically underrated as an all time great IMO, one of my favourite sportsmen)

...and no doubt I've forgotten some too, I'm not that old :D

RP as been a great of the game, no doubt, but IMHO in the 45 yrs I have watched test cricket, Greg Chappell is the best Aust. player I have seen, with Ponting on a par or just a little ahead of S. Waugh and Border.

The best world players I have seen would be:

Sobers
I. V. A. Richards
Tendulkar
Lara
Barry Richards
