Surprised Oxley is hardly getting a mention. He is a bit of a liability defensively but his ball use is top 5 at the club. Bring him in for Maynard/Ramsey (both who I rate but have to be dropped after the weekend) and Reid for Frost and the defence looks a whole lot better imo.

As far as actual defending goes, I'm not that concerned. You can't defend effectively when the opposition is as dominant in midfield as Syndey's was on Saturday.

We need blokes that can kick and who aren't soft at the same time. We should've been poaching some of the Hawks players 3 years ago. Suckling would've been ok. Hodge is the type of player we really need though.

B: M.Williams, N.Brown, J.Marsh
HB: S.Sidebottom, B.Reid, T.Langdon

I see this as a well balanced back 6. We need composure and skill desperately and Sidebottom will give us that down back without forcing Pendlebury down there.

Reid and Brown give us a strong and reliable (when fit!) KPD, while Williams, Marsh and Langdon help supply run.

Guess we can go back to

Toovey, brown, Goldsack
Ramsey, Reid, williams

Puts a fair bit of experience back in wouldn't you say, at least these blokes defend. Cheers to less leakage

Toovey and Goldsack leak goals like a sieve.

I think long term Maynard might be pretty good. Guys like Hodge don't grow on trees though, especially now that everybody has worked out that contested ball winning ability and good footskills are the bee's knees. Broomhead and Scharenberg are the other two that have great footskills/decision-marking but I'm worried they won't be able to get on the park. Also Aish.

Brown was a quite early pick.
Reid and Scharenberg were as well (unfortunately both have been smashed by the injury gods).
Maynard was a top 30 pick IIRC.

I do see your point and on Saturday night we Brown was our only early pick out there in defence, but looking at our list in terms of first choice back six, you could think "well three of the six were top 10 picks". Just having no luck getting them on the field.
I think Maynard will turn out to be a reasonable kick, just not sure how sound his defensive skills are, like Scharenberg he seems to lack a bit of pace. Your last point is a big key though and I reckon a fit Reid has been a bigger loss to our back line than most realised, me included.

Taking the piss right? You hadn't noticed all the tears on here in regard to Reid's absence over the last couple of years?

Watching the dogs game on the weekend strengthens this argument. Our halfback flankers and horrible by foot. And we really struggle with pace of the back half. I have no problem with our keys. this is the one part of our game that will stop us from climbing into the 4 or even the 8.

Wonder what would happen if we ever tried:

B: Toovey , Brown, Oxley/J Smith
HB: Pendlebury, Reid, Sidebottom

Mids: Rotation 1: Adams, Crisp, Treloar Rotation 2: Greenwood , De Goey, Williams
Wings: Varcoe, Aish, Langdon, Howe

If you're going to play a attack from the back gameplan, why not place some offensive players there to begin with?

I think Marley through the middle has shown some great signs, I am sure he swung a game for us in there last year at the G.

That midfield may not be good enough though.

We tried that with Young at the end of 2012, I think the softness of some hawks is hidden by their structures.

Whilst we have a couple of dodgy skilled players in the back half and there were a couple of absolute clangers I would hate being in our back line on Saturday night when under siege then looking up when I get the ball and seeing no options to kick to.

Those behind the goal camera shots where totally damning as no-one upfield was creating an option or spreading.

Our midfield group barring a couple of blokes were totally disgusting.

Exactly, what was it, 76 inside 50's against? Hawthorn would struggle under that pressure, and at the ease the ball was coming in.

As well as this, our defence was always outnumbered, our midfield work rate was horrendous. Whenever we got the ball deep in defence, none of our mids had the work ethic to run and provide viable options.

Our back 6 was left out to dry...

I was always bullish about us going forward but always had a question mark against our inept, uncreative, lack of skill back line. now its a full stop!

I dont know how our recruiting team dont have the same view? do they actually think the likes of Ramsay, Frost, Maynard & Langdon can play? we wont do anything until we repurpose or start again with the back line.

Have a look how even & dangerous the Bulldog back 6 are....

My biggest worry is that we'll finish in the bottom 3 or 4 and have to give it away to Bris or GWS next year!

I like the way you think. Sidey is a very good one on one player and a good (not great) kick on both feet. Pendles is a great decision maker and brings a sense of calm in the middle of the tornado. The midfield coverage looks okay and with a rebounding backline it wouldn't be the end of the world if we lost a few centre clearances.

Think Varcoe needs to be sacrificed to the backline as much as id like him up fwd.
Aish is a good kick and played defence.
Get Reid and Shaz on the park and keep them on the park big ask i know.
Get Heppell through free agency to finally get a replacement for Heater.

B: Aish Brown Scharenburg
HB: Varcoe Reid Heppell

Honestly i was more shocked about how badly they actually defended than kicked the ball...

Yep. Outside Nathan Brown (standard) everyone else was beaten handily. So clearly Franklin had a bad game a couple of years back when Frost kept him to 1. Oh well, the search for a backman that can curb Franklin continues.

I agree with most that our backline is certainly our weakest link. all teams have injuries but for us it's a best ball users that aren't playing. if you replace our bottom 6 ball users with those out injured it has a direct impact up the field. eg) backman kicks out and slightly is off that puts pressure on the next kickers and so on. Put in the following
Reid
Varcoe
Sharanberg ( yes I know injured )
Aish
Elliott
Howe
Grundy
now take out our presumed worst offenders
Witts
Frost
Maynard
Sinclair
Gault
McCaffer
Blair

the good news is I dare say that 4 of those will be back in the next 2 weeks

Maccaffer?
