He was "elected" for the purpose of modernising the church & eliminating the sleaze and corruption in the Vatican

He's doing what was too big a job for his predecessor, thus he "decided" to retire

The Catholic Church doesn't throw bones. To have a Pope talking like this will be creating a lot of disquiet within the Vatican.

Along with the outing of pedophile priests and the admission of guilt and cover-ups (an entirely different issue I know), this is disquiet that needs to be made IMO.

He is a Jesuit

Always a high risk choice. Pell thought he was a conservative well he got that one wrong.

Sounds like a "See we're hip with contemporary Western opinion" bone.

Jesus Christ that is very pusillanimous - maybe his exposure to actual poverty in Argentina might have focused on the role of the Church as comforter and alms giver - instead of the hateful bullshit that spews from a Son of Privilege like George Pell railing against those animist Greenies with his rich mates at the ******* Melbourne Club

The Js in Australia have unequivocally and abjectly apologised for any child abuse and given free access to the files in their care and control against their legal advice - Pell on the other hand.....

It's a zucchetto.

I forget the religious significance but they are frequently used as personal gifts. The Pope often gives it to his visitor after an audience.

The Jesuits are a decent bunch. Much more interesting to listen to than the likes of Pell, and tend to have that almost Jewish quality of self-critical inward thinking.

So he's just saying what the rank and file members have been thinking for years. No big deal.

"In a dramatically blunt interview with an Italian Jesuit journal, Francis said the church had "locked itself up in small things, in small-minded rules" and should not be so prone to condemn"

Very refreshing to read, far too much time is wasted on focusing on outdated rules and damnation. There is room in the modern world for the Church as an organization if they focus on their main role, charity and helping those in times of hardship.

All of which sits rather badly with the recent excommunication and defrocking of an Australian priest , for advocating gay marriage and the rights of women within the church
