Population increase - how can anyone think its sustainable and why does it not get mentioned?

The only solution to what we face in the near future is bringing the population down to a sustainable number. But its not even on the radar of government policy.

Tl;dr: we are f***ed. Absolutely, undeniably f***ed.

Agree in principle but
a) A one child policy is unenforceable short of an iran style theocracy. Even then.....
b) The urge to procreate is so strong in some people you won't change. Just like the desire to eat, drink, sleep, screw some will just pop em out without consideration and act on what is (after all) natural impulse

Yes we're pretty ****ed but it is human nature to overreach. You won't stop it.

Yep. I know a few people who've gone through IVF. The amount of angst accompanying that process is off the charts. Having children just becomes the most important thing in the world for many people once they reach a certain age. Dunno how you can control that impulse...obviously China had success in their urban areas, but with some draconian measures like forcing people into poverty or abortions.

There's plenty of room and plenty of food in Australia to go around.

It's not as much about "having room" or "plenty of food", as having all the facilities and infrastructure in place to have sustainable communities, employment opportunities, etc.

Plenty of room on the Nullabor plain, but there's nothing there unless you have the wherewithall and finances to build a city yourself.

THis will become a massive political issue in the next five years.

Currently people are wearing because they buy the line that high immigration = prosperity.

But the second the housing market falls properly (as it looks very much like doing) people wil arc right up.

Even if the magic Ponzi scheme keeps afloat, people will still get jacked off by the lack of infrastructure, and even the hassle caused by new infrastructure builds soon.

But I suspect an economic downturn will really turn the knife.

Would we ever see house prices drop like usa did few years back. Like $20k for a house

On [device_name] using BigFooty.com mobile app

We already have that, just not in the cap cities where 80% of the people live. You can buy a 600 sqm block of land in Laverton (WA) for $5k if you want to.

The reason we haven't seen a big crash the way the US did is that we've had favourable economic conditions. House prices being cut in half isn't impossible, but if we get to that point then the Australian economy will be in the toilet. We're also a small market in global terms and attractive to foreign investment. If the govt wants to boost sagging house prices they'll just relax foreign ownership laws even further. Kents.

I understand that point of view, but in many ways that’s the sort of person that should be having children. If they raise them on the values that they have, it’ll actually be a social good that will improve society down the line, whereas if they don’t procreate their values die with them and we basically end up living in a world that is the beginning of Idiocracy.

Good to hear

You people worry too much.

Nothing a good hard ass virus or zombie outbreak cannot take care of.
