No, we don't. We really, really don't.

People talk about climate change and how we - even though we are a small player population wise - as a first world nation should set an example. The first step is maintaining a stable population.

The World NEEDS to move past the idea that population growth is good.

i go further than that, i believe its the responsibility of the travis boaks (and taylor walkers) to make it clear what this shit does before inviting people along to the establishments to catch up with them.

It makes them no different than a prostitute who wont use condoms.

We export so much and we produce more than we need. We could easily accommodate a larger population without upsetting our environment.

We have the lowest population density all of continents on Earth except Antarctica by a long way.

Our exports are the major reason that any feel good climate change measures we think up are a waste of time. If we gave even a fraction of a **** about climate change we wouldn't dig up 5 times more coal than we burn to ship overseas...

We have a low population density for a reason, and the vast majority of people that emigrate here end up in the cap cities.

When I was a kid Perth's drinking water came from dams (run off) and groundwater. In the space of about a decade we're up to 50% desalinated water. Traffic sucks and housing is expensive (largely a function of the city layout and infrastructure) but the solution isn't to add more people.

Where do you propose people settle, and why would they?
 
Inland Australia needs more, and you only have to look at the FIFO workforce to see there is work outside the cities. Unfortunately they don't want to, people want to have their cake and eat it too. Work in the bush and live comfortably in the city.

Australia is a wasteland. Forget all the shit environmentalists sell you about the country, not the whole outback is like the Kimberly. Its a wasteland of wind and dirt. People can go someway to fixing that.

Maybe we don't need to add more people, just move them.

I don't want to side with little graham on yet another one of his thread derailing conspiracy theories but I wish fast food places (and everyone else) would stop producing unnatural shit full of preservatives, additives etc.

There has always been a distinction between good and bad (sometimes) food, hence the food pyramid(s). A McDonald's type meal is supposed to be full of fat, sugar and salt. That's the appeal. It's all the other shit that makes it gross.

Why would anyone live in the Pilbara or Goldfields or wherever if they don't have to? Resource companies don't want to staff hospitals, schools etc. and governments can wash their hands of FIFO operations because all the kiddies live in the city etc.

As I said, Australia has a low population density for a reason. Most if it is inhospitable.

If Adelaide had any industry/employment prospects it would be the most desirable cap city purely on the basis that it doesn't grow by 100,000 people each year.
 
Some people prefer living in those places, but in general the spirit of the pioneer is dead. People become soft and slaves to comfort.

Inland and much of Australia is basically uninhabitable or desert land, this is why the major cities are where they are located.

I agree about overpopulation, it's a huge issue in 2016, but don't talk about it because it's racist, mmmkay, so don't complain about foreigners with lots of cash taking your job or buying up housing, not in front of wealthy boomers or egos who don't do any research outside of a mainstream news article..

Has nothing to do with growing Australia, it's about propping up the hilarious RE industry..

Your last sentence sums it up. It would be up to the customer to make the choice to wear the condom to protect themselves. As it's up to the individual to consume Macca's. They might be both available, it's up to the consumer of said products to be aware.

Problem will sort itself out at critical mass. Diminishing amount of resources = smaller supply, growing population = higher demand.

Its essentially a 'double whammy' in terms of the increase for the cost of resources. People will eventually be priced out of having too many kids if they are having kids at all.

Or dat dere singularity happens so we're all good.

Your last sentence is completely contrary to the modern economic ideology. While i agree with it, its almost unimaginable to cite a society that doesnt force growth as the be all and end all.

Diminishing resources means a world war I dare say. Though that would definitely take care of the population

Those that are poorer have more kids because the survival rate is lower and they require more children to assist in sustaining a greater economic prosperity. Ultimately counter productive but that's why it happens

Those already prosperous tend to have less kids as it is.

Current population = 7 billion and climbing.
Average birth rate in the West = 1.8

Work out where the increase is coming from.

The answer is increased reliable contraception and increased women's (true) rights. Not the leftist gibberish that "feminists" carrying on with here without mentioning true inequality.

As to Australia. Those in the major cities are living first hand what an increasing population is doing and it ain't pretty. Our resources can't cope. Australia's population has more than tripled in less then 3 generations and we are stretched thin.

5 million since the turn of the century. Mostly caused by immigration.

I am all for supporting refugees and think their treatment is disgusting and they are being scape goated and exploited to hide Government and Big Business incompetence/corruption on the issue. But our current 457 immigration in take is far far too high.
