with graham now rejecting them after Dunkley who they chased all year, port have a long history of failing to bring players across to them, Dawson last year opted for Adelaide over port, it’s the same city, so what is exactly is problem at that club? Why do they consistently miss there trade targets?

Edit thread title to be good players.

To be fair they have got some players in the last few years. Behold:

Motlop
Fantasia
Watts
Rockliff.

All those missing pieces.

I'll give them Aliir Aliir as a pass mark.

Their list management is riding the events of the 2018 draft to justify their existence when in reality the overwhelming percentage of their decisions are bad ones. Need far more scrutiny.

Ken Hinkley is a dud coach and everyone knows it and David Koch and the board (all also duds) insistence on "stability" is letting us rot.

There's also potentially the issue of South Australia being hard to attract talent to that isn't from South Australia.

But we've done pretty well with attracting talent in previous years and have only started to see this in the last few.

It's all Hinkley and Koch killing this club. Sack them both.

Oh come on. You can’t judge a few recent non gets and say they cannot attract players. I am sure if you analyse every club in terms of their gets and rejects it would be no different. And in general, Port has a pretty good record in attracting players. Stupid and ignorant thread.

your understanding is completely false, as a quick google attests the club successfully attracted players

the issue this year is why are we going after players like rioli when we need a tall defender and a player like dunkley when we have so many big bodied midfielders

They have no problem attracting players and the players they get tend to stay. Probs should avoid playing things out in the media as they seem to be doing this time around though. Lots of clubs have a nibble at players but they don't leak on it.

Don't really need much, they have the players and Kenny to lead them back to the finals next year.

Geelong’s Wishlist this year was Jacob Hopper and Brodie Grundy and we missed on both of them. If the team that just won the GF by 13 goals can’t get their first choice, then it’s not an easy thing to do.

Hinkley was within a minute or two of the 2014 GF IIRC. The man can absolutely coach; it’s just a question of whether he has gone on too long at the one club IMO.

The bar for what outsiders think Port fans should consider success is so low that "almost in a grand final 8 years ago" is apparently the sign of a good coach.

He is a dud. Watch our games, there's nothing resembling a coherent gameplan other than "run harder than those blokes".

Get him out of my club

In the last 10 years or so....

Polec
Motlop
Rockliff
Watts
Finlayson
Dixon
Aliir
Fantasia
Lycett
Burton
Ryder
Ebert
White

CoNsIsTEnT FaILURe!!1!
Polec - great value, cashed him out at the right time
Motlop - fine
Rockliff - bit below fine, but didn't break the bank and he got squeezed for a good side
Watts - yeah that's a waste, but unlucky with his ankle blowing apart
Finlayson - smart pick up for free
Dixon - good get, just always a bit too Dixon to be great
Aliir - smart pick up
Fantasia - a risk/reward that didn't pay off
Lycett - good get
Burton - good get
Ryder - good get
Ebert - good player
White - Matty White?!!!

I'd say Port have probably overachieved in recruiting considering:
A) they play in the Adelaide
B) it's been a long time since they were a buzz team on the rise

To miss out on Dunkley and Graham in the same year hurts though. Clearly a big body midfielder was a priority and they had plan A and B and both failed.

Did you really miss out on them or did you pivot to Bruhn, Henry +/- Bowes all of which are probably better long term buys. I think you'd love Hopper to replace Selwood, but Grundy makes even less sense for Geelong than he does Melbourne.

We have been into Hopper for years and wanted him badly - plus he is a better fit for a club which is going to be in contention next year.

Grundy would be a fantastic fit for us. Stanley is not a great ruckman and is 32. Ceglar is 30-something and injury prone. Next cab off the rank is Conway who is 19. Grundy would be perfect.

We have lots of problems.

Recruiting hasn't been one of them
Neither has drafting.

So one might ask, where do the problems lie?

The cattle hasn’t exactly been there IMO. There is a reasonable gap between Port’s very talented next crop, and ageing veterans.

I guess we all can't attract the types of Tim O'Brien and Josh Schache.

If you've been there 11 years, you should've had the time to develop your own cattle. Our team was supposed to be the next big thing in 2013 when he came on, then again in the Rozee / Butters / Duursma years. The team keeps changing (outside of a couple of veterans), the only constant has been Donuts Hinkley.
