Different game plan next year Rick. Chippy chippy football was attributed to a lack of forward targets. That wont happen next year as Port will find a few proven faces up forward to present. The game is slowly changing back to long kicks inside 50. The clubs are aware of it and will adjust to be competitive. You will find a shift to the old days of resting ruckmen in the forward line (well the ones that can take a grab anyway.)
Yes please, because it's the first time footy became a chore for me. The game style was killing me. Not to mention the last game I went to I got the dreaded call about my Mum in hopsital , so footy park has bad vibes now :(

We played Lade in that role for much of this season but the players still chipped the ball around with very slow movement into the forward 50.

On most occasions when someone went against team rules and kicked it long into the it was a high bomb to Ebert

Agree. But what i am saying is a Resting ruckmen, not a ruckmen at rest. Carlton will do it next year and do it well with Robbie Warnock, Saints do it well to. Leading quick one grab forwards with a good kick is where the clubs are looking. Take nothing away from Brett as i think he has a role to play at port but seriously if that was our best option, i think my reasoning has merit.

Sorry mate, you've lost me there.
The up and coming ruckmen as in the younger generation of potential draftees, and also those who are already new in the system, need to be able to do so much more than just ruck. These kids have stamina and have also been well schooled in kicking and marking ability. U/18 and development coaching as well as game day requires these kids to be on the ground alot more than say in an AFL game. The rotations are nowhere near the rotations in the AFL as it is all about winning games and show casing their talents. Part time ruckmen are being introduced more and more, clubs are even training the ( smaller third man in) to contest, allowing the talls to branch off and go long. They must be able to lead and mark though

I am seriously considering going for the Port board next year. I have some experience on the board of a non-profit and a small sports club but mostly I want the clubs traditions and respect to be earnt back.

Can someone (REH perhaps) let me know when the AGM is and how many PAFC spots will be up for grabs. Are they voted by the members? Do you have to be nominated by the board or just a member?

Also would there be a job description anywhere including hours required and reinbursement?

Perhaps PM me if you have any info.

Alex Panas is up for re-election as his 3 year term as a member elected board member is up (Toop and Wakelin next year and Aber the year after that).

The AGM is usually held on the 15th December + or - a few days. There will be the notice of the AGM which also will call for nominations for the available board positions, published in the Advertiser in the first few days of November.

If you are serious about this, I would write to, probably ring him first, Steve Weinert who is GM of Finance and Admin but more importantly, is the company secretary and is responsible for these matters.

We got 28000 through the turnstyles with 4 locked gates in Round One and lost money.

Centrals will do heaaaaaps better! :thumbsu:
And how may were there in round 22 to farewell 2 champions of the club?

Our supporters are being shown for their true colours. The majority of them are not loyal. They are bandwagoners...

Obviously the Centrals comment was said in jest but you get my drift.

The crowd problem is not gonna go away as long as we play at the sh!thole of AAMI Stadium.

We don't have a huge number of fans to begin with, and when you play at a D Grade stadium in a terrible location with no facilities competing with live broadcasts on TV it just makes the problem worse. On top of that, we have a crazy stadium deal that costs us money if we don't hit 27000 people a game!

The most baffling part is that some people still think we don't need to move. After we only got 17000 to the Lade/Burgoyne farewell game, there were people saying "See, what's the point of building a new stadium or moving to Adelaide Oval if we only get 17000?". That's WHY we have to move! The people are voting with their feet - they just won't be forced into going to that cess pit anymore. It's all very well and good for the diehards to proclaim 'I'd go see Port anytime, anywhere and anyone else who doesn't think that way isn't a true fan' but that attitude won't change our crowd situation one iota and is therefore counterproductive.

The good news about our dire financial position is that it is going to force the club into action on this topic. If the staus quo is preserved we'll be insolvent within 5 yrs so it's move or die basically.

Interesting how this works with the bigger clubs. Do the board members get brownie points first inside the club for example hang around the club a fair bit?

Same with A.O board, I saw my old employer is up for election this year, if we want to see boring statements, read the scripts for those people.

Nearly every candidate only discuss Adelaide Oval itself, I am waiting for a candidate to actually say they have an agenda to correct turf cricket and strengthen our roots.

Member elected board members, have to get votes, to get in. If 95% of the members don't give a stuff and don't vote, then it's a relatively easy job for the existing candidate to get re-elected unless they face a celebrity, or new star type candidate or someone who puts in a lot of time and effort to get elected.

Alex Panas was on the Magpies board and was the instigator of the Power Go's... events. He ran a grass roots campaign and was up against Mark Wightman who was the marketing guy on the board and was involved with the initially branding of the club in the AFL and was seen to be behind The Power branding push. Many on here said they would vote against Wightman because he was taking us away from our roots and Panas was seen as real Port man. Panas won easily. That may have been a bit of a shock to the existing board.

Next year Anthony Toop in a smart strategy teamed up with Darryl Wakelin and ran against a couple of no name members. Members were always going to favour Darryl and a well known businessman over a couple of blokes who had done a few things at the club, but had no profile.

Aber was the only candidate last year, so he didn't have to run an election campaign.

Basically the slacker and more uninterested the members are as a whole, the easier it is for re-election. No different to local, state or federal elections and incumbent members.

At the AGM I will ask Alex for a simple yes or no answer. Did you vote for the re appointment of Mark Williams?. I hopefully will do this publicly. I will demand a yes or no answer, nothing more. If he refuses to answer the question I will notify him that I will not be voting for him as I need to know what the member represents. If he is unwilling to tell me, how can I vote for him?

You have to vote before the AGM. There usually is a couple of days difference between the deadline for receiving voting slips from members and the AGM. That is pretty standard procedure for voting on board members of any type of company.

That sort of defeatest attitude is more suited to the other pleb clubs.

In reality;

We had a slightly below par year - but to be honest who cares. It's first or nothing in my book, we were never going to win the flag so it's irrelevant.
We are losing one player - with the possibility of gaining others and potentially solving some of our on field issues
We have attendance issues - yeah, this is a hard one.

Nothing unsolvable. I have the utmost faith that the Port Adelaide FC's biggest strengths - tradition, solid football values and people power will not only see us move through this period but once again flourish.

If anything I have been impressed with how many of my off field issues have been addressed this year.

Glass half full people.
I agree with this^^^^

We will still exist in 2011 because the AFL require two AFL clubs in Adelaide. If we are struggling who do you think they can replace us with that would do any better. The AFL will keep us alive even as a basket case.

The only silver lining I can see to our spiralling downwards is that the AFL may finally lose patients with the parasites at the SANFL and take control of our AFL licence from them.
The AFL have got what they wanted ever since they requested Port to enter the AFL, why, because we are the most sucessful in club in the land.

Not directed specifically at you, sorry.

Well our list for next year is already looking worse with Burgoyne leaving...
Burgoyne has done Sweet FA this year, and we just missed the finals.

This morning when I saw the news about Shaun a wave of despair swept over me.
I could not believe another stab in the heart of out great club.
Then I started thinking about it.
F*#$ him and all other soft c@cks.

If he cannot play for us and give us 100% we don't need or want him.

Our playing group needs to *want* to be there, to *want* to pull on the guernsey every week and play their guts out.

Will it happen? I have no idea but cutting dead wood and letting the sooky la-las go is a great way to start.

Bring on next year I'll be back to watch again !!
Where is the broom to remove the remaining dead wood please.

I am looking forward to our future with or without Mark Williams at the helm.

I'd suggest all of the members on this site get themselves to the AGM. The Club needs to be made aware of our discontent.

It's all well and good us discussing issues in this forum, but the best place to voice concerns is surely at the AGM. I also strongly suggest that you put forward balanced, to the point concerns and CONSTRUCTIVE criticisms about your issues directly to Mark Haysman via email. I have done it and he does respond.

Hmm sounds like if I wanted to get on the board it would have to be this year. Toop, Wakes and Abba would be almost impossible to dislodge even if you wanted to.

I dont know much about Alex Panas REH. Is he seen to have done a good job in his role. I would only want to be giving up the time if I felt I was making a difference so replacing a board member who is doing a good job and is a good maggies guy probably isn't worth it.

I will contact Steve Weinert and find out what it would entail though.

Well if not crisis then under quite remarkable pressure. I've even heard our CEO Mark Haysman might be being sought by Cricket Australia (and if that happens we would be unlikely to retain him).
The reappointment of Chocco frustrates me, there would have been something refreshing about a huge clean-out. Unless I've gravely misjudged his ability to re-build us I just dread where we'll be in two more years.
I'm not a fan of his (Shaun Burgoyne) either, but he had great talent and we can't just stick Lower, Davenport or Logan into the middle and pretend nothing ever happened.
I was no fan either, I admired his many skilful games but he was not consistent and not a leader. I'm delighted that players like Hartlett, Stewart, and those you mention will get greater chances.

PAFC is a plaything for Toop, but I think he's actually finding out how hard it is to market a football club and build a successful club in an 'equalised' competition, as opposed to marketing high end real estate. Toop is an extremely smart guy in his field (in fact one of the best in Oz), but I think you guys need someone who has been there and done that in building a successful football business or in another sporting arena. Businesses that rely on a membership basis and who live and die on the result of a game or two are entirely different to an industry like real estate that was in dire need of a shake up and was just waiting for the right approach. You cannot build market share in a tough market, if you don't have a product that is attractive to the punters currently.

Directors who do not come from strong sporting backgrounds can seemingly be a little startstruck when having players, coaches etc at their disposal and then are obviously hesitant to make tough calls on people they revere or possibly even idolise. Many a successful businessperson has made bad decisions over the years when it relates to passions and is not just a simple business decision.

FWIW, 'The Creed' would have been fine if you had a bigger membership, but all it did was alienate non-Port people and perhaps retained some wavering diehards. The Creed could have been introduced as a secondary marketing campaign for that purpose. I don't know what the answer is, but some hints like the positivity surrounding a new and strong club guernsey this year, as opposed to one designed by a marketing company, leads you to believe that perhaps some of the answers are actually very simple and that the surgery required is not major, but more corrective surgery. I'm sure there are far smarter people than me who can work this out and see your club back off the ropes.

I don't know much about Alex Panas and not living in Adelaide haven't had any contact with him. His campaign in 2006 was basically one of getting back to the grass roots supporter. My nephew is the president of the Outer Army and Alex visited their bbqs etc many times before he ran for the election as well as since being on the board. He has a good opinion of him. I think he has a solid block of votes from those several hundred members.

I don't know if anyone other than his fellow board members and senior management know how he has voted and what he has initiated during his time on the board. I guess if he has to campaign for his spot, he will tell us what he has specifically done in the last 3 years.

On the crowd issue, 4 friends of mine didnt renew their season tickets this year for the first time since the Power's inception due to a change in their circumstances i.e. moving interstate for work........

If the club is fair dinkum......why has no one ever contacted them to follow up or find out why this is the case?....The club constantly states they are working 'Very hard at increasing our crowd numbers'........

These people had never missed a game and bought a season ticket every year........just thought maybe the club might be interested to know why they hadn't renewed........obviously they aren't.

Overall a good post mate but this bit is typical of a brain washed Crows supporter which you obviously are not. :)

What does the size of our membership have to do with the effectiveness of attracting new members

Who cares if our marketing campaign alienates non-Port people. Do you think GMH worry about their marketing campaigns alienating Ford people? The whole idea of the campaign was to bring Port people out of the wood work, ie convert Port supporters to Port members. Anyone who believes that any marketing campaign run by the PAFC will convert the supporters of any other AFL club in large numbers is delusional. That is the type of rubbish I expect the likes of Graham Cornes and his brain dead side kick to sprout, "If the PAFC drop their connection with the old Port Adelaide they will easily get 30K more members"

I have a bit of an interest in crowd figures, and I wonder if I am alone in saying that I think 25,000 average crowd is great for our club. Anything above I reckon is a bonus, but I do believe we will continue to grow. After all, we are virtually 1 SANFL club that was promoted into the AFL, and we dont have opposition supporters (like when every Victorian team plays each other) to pull up our av crowds. Why is this something to be ashamed of.

To put it in perspective, here is a list of the 'bigger' English soccer clubs who in the last season, had lower average attendances than us

Crystal Palace
Nottingham Forrest
Southampton
Birmingham City
Bolton
Bradford
Burnley
Charlton Ath
Coventry City
Fulham
Ipswich Town
Leeds Utd
Queens Park Ranges
Millwall
Sheffield Wed
Wolverhampton
Blackburn
Bristol City
Cardiff City
Hull City
Leicester City
Barnsley
Watford
Wigan
Reading
Portsmouth

A few are in the EP, most are in the next div down. I would say that costs for these clubs (ie player payments) would be much larger than AFL, so why are these clubs still happily surviving (must admit some are not going that well), and we are loosing money at AAMI. Something is wrong with our AAMI arangement (as we all know)

Also compared to NRL games, we are fantastic. If the AFL want full stadiums each week, then the AFL should consist of 6 teams: crows, eagles, Collingwood, Carlton, Essendon and maybe Geelong, and cease all other clubs. However would this be very interesting, no way

Yes, you are right. He is on the Board for himself and his CV.

However, I disagree with your take on LTC. Why would we worry about alienating "non-Port" people? Do you think the marketing campaign was designed to get Hawthorn, Adelaide or Fremantle supporters to become Port members? I thought the campaign was designed to re-affirm the support of Port people.

As for the guernsey- I hope our guernsey we wore for two rounds this season becomes our away guernsey (minus the large logo) and we don't bother about a clash guernsey- many other clubs don't.
