Port Adelaide visited Geelong in july1879 and played a game against them
Port lost. quite comprehnsiveley !

in 1886 Geelong visited Port Adelaide ( record unavailable )

1890 Port win SAFA premiership, challenged by South Melbourne to " Champions of Australia " Port won.

In mid - late August 1884 Melbourne FC visited Adelaide for a competition series.
Melbourne won one of a five games series whilst here and Port drew with them 15 points to 8 , No goals being scored so a draw was counted.

Early June 1885 Port were in Melbourne playing South Melbourne at the MCG and a draw ensued, they then lost to Melbourne 4.6 - 7.16 and Geelong 2.8 - 5.10.
The trip was made by steamer as all inter colonial trips were.

!887, Carlton visited Adelaide for a series of games Port played and lost 5.6 - 7.9
( I currently dont have access to the other games they played or how many )
my source only refers to "a Series". Some 6,000 turned up to watch.

1888 Essendon visited Adelaide for " a series of matches " they beat all comers ...except Port with whom they drew.. 3.14 - 3.13

More info to ensue as it comes to hand

Why do I get the feeling that Indian Book-makers may have been involved with this game!?

That's grouse info, PA1870!

I reckon one bloke who'd be interested in knowing that data would be a fellow called Phil, who is currently writing a history of seasons for all leagues in the country.

It's worth a gander : http://philsworld.iwarp.com/footy/project.htm

Who bloody cares ?????????
Tell it to the Port supporters !!!!!

1. No it isnt going to end....as long as we are given the histories of VFL and other AFL clubs, well we can now see Port in context to them in earlier years.
2. You care, you seem to look up all the Port posts to make some sort of point.
(a) of all the 100's of posts you seem to make a point of looking up Port posts to say you arent interested. !

2. Port Adelaide play in the AFL , the club is as old as North Melbourne , it is pertanant to the overall picture, to see the history of this club admitted to the AFL in context of their own clubs history.

3. If you dont like it.....stiff !!

More later guys.........

kindest regards

It's funny how visiting teams usually lose.Just like todays games. Also if port adelaide is so good. How come when they joined the afl they were shit?Did you lose too many players to a stronger competition before hand? How you can compare 2 differant leagues it's like comparing differant generations. In the end no one knows exactly but can only go on knowledge, and all the eexperts say the vfl was alot stronger then the sanfl. So in other words in winning a vfl premiership was alot harder then winning a sanfl one?I'm sure you agree with that?If you do then i can't see any more arguments on such a trivial subject.

Looks like we will have to put up with this irrelevant crap from the world's most irrelevant town, until such time as the Power Failure win an AFL flag --- It's going to be a long wait !
You guys are absolutely pathetic in your attempts to draw attention to your history in a minor competition. You just don't seem to understand that you are the only ones who think it matters.

Thank you for taking such an interest in the topic Carl. It's true the home side has an advanatage - it was even more pronounced before the rules of the game were standardised between the states.
Port Adelaide were not "shit" when they joined the AFL. They have performd as well as most other new Clubs and once I get to know your team I'm sure we'll be able to look at some actual results.
I don't see it as comparison between leagues - this seems to be a Victorian obsession, since they like to think they invented the game. The point is Port have dominated football in SA more than any club in any league. I'm new here, but isn't PA's point thay should the results of the VFL count in the AFL? I would have thought that is a damn good question.
As for those people who say this bores them, why not post on another thread, there are plenty.
