Our defence is a major concern when they don't have a battalion of teammates there to help.
Yet was our best asset last year - let's move the coach.
We had most of our 18 in defence last couple of seasons as our defenders aren't great 1 on 1 players.
The 6-6-6 has really exposed this.

Some players who I think should be very nervous about whether they play round 1:

- Clurey
- Rockliff
- Sam Gray
- DBJ

I would say Jonas but the club wouldn't drop him. Marshall needs to lift but Dixon won't play round 1 and the club won't pick Billy ahead of him.
Frampton should play ahead of Marshall at FF at this point.

Apart from a promising start it's been trash. It's hot for them too!

No wonder we needed to put 16 behind the ball last year, our defense is garbage. Zone off far too much and too far from an opponent. We won't play against Country sides and good sides will slice us apart.

Howard and Clurey aren't guys to build a defense around. Poor decision makers and fail to win any ball at all. On that can any of our defenders win a one v one?

Again our midfield looks poor apart from when Robbie Gray decides to get involved. Boak was good early but haven't seen much of since.

We really need some class and ability to win the ball in defense.

Burton has been a letdown. Looks timid a little.

On the new guys Butters looks a natural and I can see good things ahead for him. The others - meh.

Also Todd Marshall needs to really start wanting the ball and stop playing from behind.

Poorly skilled, undisciplined and too many not wanting to take responsibility for a direct opponent. Nothing good will ever come from that. No amount of tactics, fitness or talk.

The heat may be a factor but it's the same for them and they've looked miles better in nearly every aspect - disappointing to this point.

Shouldn't both teams be struggling in the heat though?
I'll have a educated guess that the side with the bigger bodies, and more experience would handle the conditions better. Not a huge surprise in a irrelevant practice game.

Butters has shown a bit, Lycett and Burton have shown some signs, and we look rusty in other areas as a team.

Not all doom and gloom as this thread suggests.

We started well then backed off.

Rickliff said we were going to slow it down to preserve our bodies.

I'll be interested to see TOG for our key players too.

I liked what I saw when we were trying and am not too concerned about what happens when we back off because it's a trial.

The only concern though is that the 'drop back, slow down, defend for a while' strategy was implemented unnecessarily throughout the back end of last year. I'd rather practice something that benefits the team (experiment with some game plans) or just doesn't reinforce a way we shouldn't be playing at all given it loses us games.

Defensively we need to improve one on one. We just arent very good at holding our position or finding good position to begin with. Jonas is normally outstanding but he's having a stinker. Glad to get his stinker out the way now and not when the real stuff starts.

Butters very impressive. Just seems omnipresent, always in the play, always around the packs. Drew has been impressive again with his disposals.

I think we'll see Watts playing more of a Hoff type role this year. Marshall needs to do more. Would like to see Rozee get a bit more further up the ground too

Am not watching the game, but enjoying the melts on here.

One thing people have realise about Lycett, whilst he is important to our structure, in terms of ability he is more Dean Brogan than he is Brendon Lade.
