I am trying to track down any memorabilia from the Port Adelaide football club,
Be it old guernseys, medals, certificates etc.
Most of all Im looking for old movie footage of Port. research tells me Games of Ports were filmed as early as 1908 then shown in Cinemas throughout SA and western Victoria in ensuing weeks. Hving spoken to old Port players they have memories of camera men at interclub games in WA in the late 30's and at a number of Victorian interclub games throughout the 20th century from the 40's onward.
The earliest footage I can trace of Port is the 1958 grand Final, but am sure having spoken to various sources home footage exists from earlier games and Port events...
if you can help, it would be much appreciated..

Can I suggest you get in touch with these two bodies

The National Film and Sound Archive

and

The National Library of Australia.

Both are in Canberra but I think the NFSA have branches in most states. It sounds like the footage you are talkng about is old newsreel stuff, some of the early footage would have been on nitrate film, which rots away quite badly if its not stored properly.

Both the NFSA and the NatLib have quite extensive collections of old newsreel footage, so they may be able to help you out. Really its just a question of whether or not anyone has gone to the trouble of storing / restoring the old film stock correctly.

Also - try the ABC, the stuff you are interested in is all from the pre-Television days but you never know what the ABC might have lying around the place.

cheers

Thanks BSA for your help, been down those paths ,initially seven years ago and subsequently several times.

The Nat. Film archive had a branch in SA but closed 5 years ago, the person at its helm had a similar mission to mine and many more contacts yet was coming to dead ends as well, though he was looking for North Adelaide film I think. Earliest Nth Adel, Film is of the 47 or 48 Grand final against Norwood, Nat film arch has that one.

Also been in contact with amatuer movie club in Adelaide and the widows of old Cinesound and Movietone news reel filmmakers.

The late KW Kristchock, was an Advertiser newspaper photographer from early in the 20 th century to the 40's or so, he also took movie film of SA football in the 20's, I believe. His son in his eighties ,was unable to help me, his grandson in his late 30's more helpful, but also unable to shed light on whereabouts of early film footage.

Ive been in contact with travelling movie men/ tent shows etc, in their late eighties and nineties at nursing homes, they remember old footy footage, but once again whereabouts unknown...

My despair is that they are all dust now.

Thanks

I fear you maybe right PA1870

Especially with nitrate film, it just turns to dust.

I'm also afraid that most of the footage was destroyed, probably 30-40 years ago as all the old Newsreel studios went out of business and the companies were wound up, stuff like unwanted stock footage usually just ended up in the rubbish bin ...

One idea you might like to consider is 'hitting the road' and visiting every country town in SA / Western Vic / Broken Hill that used to have a cinema. Often old film stock is literally just 'lying around the place' in these disused and now derelict buildings.

I know the National Film and Sound Archive undertake these road trips on a periodic basis and some of the film they have managed to find and restore is amazing.

good luck ...

To PA 1870

Sorry, just a little Sth Aust memorabilia here in Launceston at the museum where I work. Had a look in the Jack Donnelly collection (which I've mentioned before in posts to bigfooty boards). There are a couple of match programmes from the late 1940s (West Ad v Port Ad in May 1947 & Interstate game West Aust v Sth Aust in 1949).

There is a nice set of match programmes for the entire 1965 finals series. I gather Port won the flag that year!

Not hopeful of finding anything else, will let you know if something appears...

Cheers
