Far out.

One can be disappointed and not pleased with the performance yesterday, critical of the plan and structure - and individual performances.

AND still be hopeful and positive about the future

They're not mutually exclusive positions and it's not an overreaction to say we sucked yesterday and that we should have concerns

Hoping we don't turn into happy clappers just because Hinkley isn't there.

I didn't see the game yet, but we're missing our 3 best players and only lost by 3 kicks in a pre-season game against last season's minor premiers? Feels like pretty big reactions in here.
On paper 19 points looks ok but it was clear it was a top side playing a bottom 6 outfit the way they moved the ball and big marking targets up forward was something we are clearly lacking. It was 5 or 6 goals most of the night.
Not sure how Jordan Sweet played in the seconds but Dante Visentini was very disappointing.

100%, you just have to look at our list and players who are getting a game.

Positives were Evans, Drew, Lorenz and Whitlock in patches. Other than that, it was just okay, nothing to get too excited about.

The idea of not playing Marshall for the whole first half, when you didn’t pick Esava and BZT was baffling. Surely the whole point was to see how he goes with a proper run back there as the 3rd tall to Aliir and Ramm? Instead we go undersized and Thilthorpe has a field day, as there was never an interceptor cutting across to help.

I know they will keep persisting, but it’s very obvious Rozee is a midfielder, Bergman is a defender (not a KPD, but a tall intercepting HBF like Tom Stewart) and Marshall is a forward.
If you were a recruiter last night looking at our forwards last night Jack Whitlock showed some real glimpses of class, the rest of them you wouldn’t give them a second look.

Honestly I’ve always seen years 1 and 2 for Carr about assessing the list he inherited, starting to form the list he wants, and instilling the system and playing culture he wants.

Particularly after the relative torching of our list the last guy left him with.

Anyone that thinks that would have happened by the first pre season game is an impatient fool, ie klem22 or just doesn’t understand how AFL works.
I confess I'm impatient after hating the Hinkley era (except 2014 which was brilliant). All I'm looking for is a whole team buy in. Everyone working hard for their teammates & playing their role using their strengths. For example, Luko actually trying, players kicking distances within their capabilities, players that regularly turn the ball over by foot handballing instead. Playing smart football. Didn't see any of that.

And why are we giving away so many free kicks. It kills momentum. Rutten mentioned in an interview that players need to improve in this area. It was nice to hear the GM Football making the players publicly accountable for once. I sensed some frustration in the interview. It has been a long term problem at Port& has cost us many games.

Yep, MG & JW have talent & a desire to be involved in the contest. Struggle to think of anyone else. We will badly miss a fit Rioli.

I also think we need to rotate JHF through the forward line & midfield. He understands how to play the position & attacks the ball as all good forwards do. A very good contested mark for his height too. And he has the required pace.

Anyone else surprised that Webster suggested we would seriously consider playing two rather than three tall defenders?
They probably aren't counting Marshall as a tall defender.

More a Josh Weddle or Nick Blakey... not because he can play that role, just because we are protecting his head.

'Displeased and disappointed in last night's effort, yet still hopeful and positive about the future'

Pretty much sums me up. The reality is they looked better overall than us, but actually we missed some really gettable goals, while they snagged everything. So the difference was actually not that great! Both teams had some outs, but Butters and Georgiades out, and a misfiring JHF, had a greater impact on us than their outs had on them IMO..

I think the main takeaway for me is that we had a team that looked a bit disjointed and full of cob-webs. Skill level was off completely, with dropped balls, poor passing, and the like - we def can do better than that IMO, and probably will do next week.

The worst issue for me however, was the lack of contested defence when Crows had the ball. Our players still gently jog away from their man, allowing easy movement of the ball for the oppo side. A hallmark of Hinkley's outside fast game plan. Whenever we had the ball, the player had someone right on him, with no room to move.

I see last night as good blow-out of the cobwebs, and opportunity for the coaches to tweak things, make improvements, and determine selection. Next week will be the big watch.

Still not expecting huge things from the side, but want to see improvement on the obvious issues that have plagued us under the previous coach.

Mead 1 kick, 9 handballs. and probably all bad handballs. same shit as last year

If Carr starts him round 1 we need a new coach
What attributes does he bring to a half back flank in the AFL???
No speed
No penetration in his kick
No evasiveness
No physicality
No marking ability
It’s a disturbing selection.
His Dad was a gun defender perhaps they think it’s generic.
