Why was Krak out today?
I subbed in for you. Arrived just after 1/2 time (worked until 3). Walking up to the unmanned northern entrance I heard the roar for what turned out to be our equalising second goal.Had to go to a wedding so I left at half time...missed 12-8 to 1-2...
I thought he defended really well.... And some of his aggressive kicks hitting up players through the middle were great.
Agree. Thought Toumpas was very good.I'm not sure what game some of you blokes were watching. From where I was sitting Toumpas burnt only one kick. Not hearing about his defensive grabs, heaps of one percenters and 4 great kicks to set up shots on goal. He was my second best on ground after Summo. Palmer was very good and Arch was great too. I think some people wish our players ill for some reason. Why is that??

Marshall, much class. Very much would like him to get a game or two this year, if he has the tank for it, so he gets an idea of how to be switched on all the time. Great promise and I now see why they wanted him.
Eddy, also impressed, not just by the goals, but his kicking to set others up. Defense possibly not as strong as others, but he has a go.
Frampton, cannot see why others like him. Ruckwork doesn't seem all that good, handballs a lot but not very well, kicking ok. Not a smart footballer. Love his attitood though.
Snelling, Palmer, Atley are tough and built like tanks, and strong tacklers. Snelling in particular seems to have good hands. All did well at ball ups and in time will be good mids. I would be tempted to give Palmer, the oldest? of the three, a callup as a mid sometime though mid positions are hard to come by in the 1sts.
Bonner, looks a wonderful kick, mistakes early but improved.
Ah Chee, looks as though he isn't involved, but then switches on and does something amazing, rinse and repeat. Is concentration his issue?
Best till last.
Dougal, I really rate Dougal. Another with real skills.
We need to improve: marking
I thought Irra did a bit, watching via digital pass.Got there to see last half of Ressies. Set up to win after good 3rd qtr but faded. Rudloff, Gray and Stuart the best. Baking in the sun near the scoreboard and only about 200 people in the outer (150 of them Roosters), so we went in front of the Quinn stand in the shade for main game.
About 4 blokes standing not far from us just sucking **** all match - chatting about anything and everything, and only looked up twice during the whole game, when the crowd roared in full voice. Why bother attending if the game doesn't interest you one bit. Oh well, that's my rant
The game. Most lacklustre game I can recall. Deplorable from our guys. Not remotely switched on. A better team than North would have been 8 to 10 goals up before half time. Scoreboard flattered us. Dawdling behind, second to the ball, tackles ineffective, too much ring-a-rosey in the backlines (5 or 6 handballs going nowhere followed by a pressured kick turned over).
When white was in perfect position to intercept a North short pass out of defence and pulled out of the contest to allow an easy mark to the North bloke i lost it completely. Probably lucky I wasn't called out for foul language towards White - even a mild mannered bloke like me loses it on odd occasions when I see (lack of) efforts such as that
Chad was the most fired up I can recall at qtr time huddle. Not much changed after that though for our guys. Scrounged a late couple of goals before the break to get within cooee remarkably. Son was going bunta Unlike him to be so voluble (this from a South supporter too! though I think Port is his second side these days). Reckoned Chad should strip the paint off the walls during the break. I thought we were just over complicating the game and trying to undertake too many fancy running patterns and multiple disposals that ran us INTO trouble more than anything else. Thought if we could just clear the heads and keep the game plan simple, that North were clearly unable to put us away despite thrashing us across the whole ground, that they were incapable of dealing with us if we stepped up even 10%.
As it turned out, that happened. 2nd half a 50% improvement. Still only average, but clearly a 12 goal better team than North just over two quarters, and we eased away to a comfortable win. Stood about 3 metres from KT at quarter time. Just had a "casual" smile on his face as if he didn't have a care in the world, despite the scoreline. Probably thinking China foremost these days but good to see him there.
Best for me was Summo.
Palmer one of few that played 4 quarters.
Toumpas had three clanger kicks but otherwise was our best defender and 3rd best overall.
Ah Chee was unsighted early, but was a human highlights package in the second half.
Bonner had plenty of it in the first half but turned it over and was a victim of the indecision across the defensive group before half time. His second half was brilliant. Far more decisive, and most of his kicks found the mark, including three 55 metre low flying bullets that hit a team mate on the chest.
Frampton good around the ground, but was pantsed in the hit outs.
Ladhams and Marshall clunked half a dozen ripper marks between them, and mobile on the turf as well - plenty to be excited about in the coming years with those two.
Sharrad had low stats, but his grunt work in packs to get on the ground and tap it to a team mate in the clear won't show up in the stats, but are just really great sacrificial "team acts".
Of the others:
Howard - two super pack marks, but seemed to be miles from his direct opponent most of the game, and his awareness of the game around him was poor. I guess being only young, and 12 months out of the game he is a bit "rusty" with his spatial and game plan awareness but that will come. The good thing was he looks unflustered by the knee and in great shape physically and not holding back through tentativeness.
Austin and Leinert - improved in the second half, but not in line for a call up just yet.
White- ?????????? On the delist option group I think.
Irra - did nothing much.
Young - played around 50% TOG and did his bit. Better than some on our list at present.
Reynolds - ditto as for Youngie.
Atley, Snelling, Neade - started to get a little bit of it in the 2nd half.
Drew - looks like he has real footy brain, just not enough possessions for him at this stage.
Eddy - looked lost early, but in fairness the first half delivery into the F50 was abysmal. Started to clunk a few marks and kick better in the 2nd half, which was good to see.

All games this year we've started really slowly and reactively. Probably a symptom of the inexperienced players being too focused on what they're being coached to do rather than playing the game. Hopefully as the season goes on they can learn to be switched on from the start and play instinctively while still doing everything right from the coaches' point of viewAgree with the majority of your post, particularly that we were rubbish in the first half, a better team than the chooks would have had a much bigger lead at half time, the 9 point margin definitely flattered us.
How many more marks does he need to get?Austin: Didn't really see much of him today. Needs to improve a bit if he wants to play AFL.
I don't think many were contested grabs. I'll have to keep a closer eye on him next game to see how many are contested marks from opposition kicks inside 50 and how many are from us switching the play, chip passes etc.How many more marks does he need to get?
I get that he didn't have a huge number of touches but how did he have an almost invisible 9 mark game?
Do our defenders even take many contested grabs?I don't think many were contested grabs. I'll have to keep a closer eye on him next game to see how many are contested marks from opposition kicks inside 50 and how many are from us switching the play, chip passes etc.
If I see a bunch of contested marks it's easy for me to remember it. Summerton had 14 marks but because all of them are uncontested I can only remember a few on the wing.Do our defenders even take many contested grabs?
Pittard (2) was our only defender who took a contested grab all game vs Carlton.
Pittard (2) and Clurey (2) vs GWS
SANFL defenders taking contested marks.
vs Glenelg - Toumpas (1) and Lienert (2)
vs Norwood - Howard (1)
vs North (TBA)
Probably because most marks are automatically played on from, where as contested marks you go back off the mark. The applause for contested grabs also helps it stick in your mind (unless you're at a crows match and they celebrate every time a player takes a mark)If I see a bunch of contested marks it's easy for me to remember it. Summerton had 14 marks but because all of them are uncontested I can only remember a few on the wing.
Lienert: Probably his highlights for the day were kicking a goal from 50m out and also kicking long to the top of the goal square to Eddy. It's not ideal that he's being played as a KPD though. - Why not?Player reviews.
Summerton: BOG for mine. Probably his best game since his move to the wing. Terrific captain.
Palmer: Mid minutes improved a lot and was pretty good when he was there. Also chipped in with 3 goals which was great. His best game of the season.
Ah Chee: Didn't do much early but really imposed himself later in the game, Great that he got 3 goals too.
Eddy: Should be playing AFL. Decent day for him with 3 goals. With 4 talls up forward he did well in 1 on 1 contests. Would help free up Dixon if he got called up.
Toumpas: Good game from him at half back. Had 1 clanger where he kicked across the 50m arc to a North player but apart from that he did well.
Bonner: Although he got 30 touches, he really needs to improve his kicking. Was a lot better last year but ever since the Hawks JLT match his disposal has gone down the drain.
Atley: Well built and gets a lot of the ball but just like Boak, He needs to improve his kicking. Was on the bench for a while, thought he was injured but came back on and is fine.
Frampton: Not a good game from Billy today, Didn't do too well in the ruck and his disposal by hand burnt the side a few times. Pretty frustrating.
Reynolds: Wasn't the focal point of the forward line but he was ok and managed to kick a really good drop punt on the boundary.
Howard: Good day for him, He'll play AFL this year, possibly after the bye but until then he'll keep plugging away and gaining fitness week by week.
White: Thought he pretty consistent over the 4 quarters with his effort. His speed is definitely back which is good to see.
Neade: Didn't really notice him much up forward, played half forward/wing mostly.
Sharrad: Mid minutes were well down this week so it was hard for him to make an impact.
Snelling: Palmer, Ah Chee and Atley got most of the midfield time so like Sharrad it's a bit restricted on what we can really see him do.
Robbie Young: Brought good pressure and got a goal but apart from that it was a pretty average game from him.
Lienert: Probably his highlights for the day were kicking a goal from 50m out and also kicking long to the top of the goal square to Eddy. It's not ideal that he's being played as a KPD though.
Marshall: Was probably our best player in the first quarter and kicked 2 goals then spent a fair bit of time on the bench and didn't make much of an impact later. Is not injured.
Austin: Didn't really see much of him today. Needs to improve a bit if he wants to play AFL.
Drew: I reckon he was playing a bit up the ground today and I think he's better used as a back flanker or defensive mid. Didn't do much today.
Irra: Probably his best game this season. Although he only got 10 touches it was a pretty solid game. But not top 5 like some are saying lol.
Ladhams: Provided a tall target up forward and got a few marks but kicked 2 behinds and spent a fair period on the bench due to our 4 talls structure.
