Correct me if I have made any mistakes.

*Harry Hewitt played for Port Adelaide in a game against Fitzroy at Adelaide Oval in 1891.

I have removed the Eden brothers of the 1920's and 1930's who are actually Mauritian.

These numbers highlight the importance we see in embracing indigenous players & culture. Mentioned by BT last Thursday S.Motlop is Geelongs 12th indigenous player.
Not a pissing contest but shows how clubs have historically differed in their approaches.

Geelong was the only club that didn't have any Indigenous players at one point (I think 2004). I think we also have the most Indigenous players in the AFL.

You could make a fair 22 out of these 39 players.

Harry Hewitt largely played for North Adelaide (Medindie) but was also a fair cricketer and quite intelligent as he wrote for newspapers about indigenous issues.

He also captain coached an all indigenous side against a SAFA representitive side to good results.

I'd say that if he was around today he would have made it to the AFL.

The club put this video up of our indigenous stars in the AFL before Thursday night's game.

Alyx I know you do GIFs but do you do small videos? Any chance you can cut up the video from 1.34 to 1.46 and get the late great Clinton Grybus' call of Pickett which includes "Take a bow Byron"???

I remember Eugene snr playing in the reserves telecasts hosted by Dean Davis and Denis Errey.

Lightning quick with an almost vicious daisy cutter drop kick and stab pass.

Yes I remember those days and seeing him play so well, so I was shocked when some time in the late 1980's I saw the stats that he only ever played one game for Port's league side.

So true. If you were in the wrong position, it was awfully hard to force yourself into the side back then from reserves unless you were a special talent. Imagine being a skilful wingman... there was only Bruce Light and Kim Kinnear in your way (or Bruce Nyland). Pat Taylor was a pretty handy wingman too.

Joe Kozlowski could kick 100 goals in the reserves but had to get past a couple of handy forwards like Randall Gerlach and Tim Evans.

There were examples on every line.

Talk about real pressure for spots.

Chance Bateman was the second indigenous player at the Hawks, ever.

Which goes a long way to explaining Dermott's treatment of West Coast's Chris Lewis in a bygone era.

Ford Fairlane loved your Guernsey idea

Thank you. I sent it to someone at the club. See if I get a response :D

It was interesting you came up with this thread while I was wracking my brain for Port's Aboriginal players who played exclusively in the pre-AFL period.

Whilst I remember Port being a trend-setter in playing Aboriginal players, often those players would make it to reserves level but couldn't quite crack the league side.

I'm sure there was a Motlop at Port back in the 70s, Mark I think, but I have a feeling he played at Glenelg too.

13 Premierships between them all is surprisingly low, though considering a good chunk are post AFL that's not too surprising.

I am not suggesting correlation implies causation here. Just an observation.

I know Harold Oliver isn't indigenous, and there has been a lot debate about it, but didn't he play with an indigenous player between his 1910-22 years at Ports??

Yeah, this is the post-script.

• Gavin Wanganeen, 1 x Premiership Essendon (1993)

• Troy Bond, 1 x Premiership Adelaide (1997)

• Andrew McLeod, 2 x Premierships Adelaide (1997, 98)

• Byron Pickett, 1 x Premiership Nth Melb (1999)

I can confirm that he definitely played at Glenelg.

The Eden brothers were just after him.

Agius categorically ruled him out as being indigenous although he was abused for his darker skin. Both parents from Cornwall.
