SHANE GRIMM has been appointed Port Adelaide’s new Next Generation Academy and SANFL football manager.

The former Port Adelaide player of 27 games between 1990 and 1993 will re-join the club at the start of November, replacing the Magpies’ former football manager Scott Peters in an expanded role.

That role will see him responsible for the administration of Port Adelaide’s next generation academy program as well as overseeing the club’s SANFL football operations.

Felt this deserved its own thread. We're launching a next generation academy program - not sure what form it will take at this stage and how it will tie in with the indigenous and fitness academies, if at all. From the article it looks like we'll be getting more info in the coming weeks.

Seems as though we are preparing for the day we get first dibs on Academy players. Having the Academy up and running before that time seems like good forward planning. Given how well GWS and Sydney have gone this year, there will be lots of gnashing of teeth at the next AFL CEO/Presidents meeting that those clubs have the opportunity to draft top 5 picks each and every year no matter where they finish on the ladder.

Despite the benefit to the AFL talent pool of the Northern academies, it is clearly unfair to the other clubs and with Hawthorn now starting their decline expect the drums to beat louder for all clubs to have academies and be able to draft from them.

The Swans academy has three benefits for their club:
1) priority access
2) facilitates better talent ID skills & IP amongst recruitment team
3) facilitates better development skills & IP amongst coaching team

2 & 3 are why Sydney are able to pick the eyes out of the rookie draft, and regularly pick up gems at pick 40+.

By setting up our own academy we can take natural advantage of 2 & 3, if set up properly. This should be an important step in developing the capabilities of our football department, if done properly.

AFL in sydney is growing faster by the day and where left with the declining popularity of the sanfl. Pretty bleak for SA footy and they have no one to blame but themselves. At least we as a club have two feet to stand on so we can come out stronger because of our independence and initiative.

Shane Grimm in his playing days with Port

Grimm, who joined Sturt from Woodville-West Torrens two seasons ago, was highly regarded at Unley.
After Sunday’s grand final win, Sturt chief executive Sue Dewing heaped praise on Grimm saying, “Shane locked himself away in his room for a few weeks and came up with this footy program.”
“Shane was the author of this and hopefully it will become a dynasty,” Dewing said.
Grimm played 27 games for Port from 1990-93.

Shane is a massive Port man. He was our senior coach at Hahndorf a long while ago, we won the senior flag, I think he kicked 10 in the GF. He has been really determined to forge a football career and has enjoyed plenty of success. One of those guys who just loves the PAFC and will be very committed.

What ever happened to the AFL's plan to give all the clubs an academy zone. I heard we were meant to be getting back the old SANFL magpies drafting zones for our academy as well as a split of the junior sides from 4 of the 8 SANFL teams.

Only for indigenous and multicultural kids ie the ones who qualify for these academies outside the 4 northern state ones. And they have been allocated.
